Cool, now retell the plot of The Matrix so it sounds like the New Testament.

And take out all the pleather? I mean, I'm pretty sure such nigh-on unprecedented use of [so much] tacky looking pleather was the most original element of that film.

At least restro sci-fi movies like Attack of the Green slime had cool silver catsuits (and laser guns).

Oh, what really got me was deciding to name the kids after every character who'd ever been in the book.

I mean, that was just like - the characters hadn't moved on at all, like they were living in the past instead of looking to the future.

-_- Fail.

If there really is a hero of the ages and it's not just a ploy to get folk to open up strange wells, then perhaps Kelsier could technically maybe have also qualified? as the person who way back when who was considered as having been the hero of ages was offed and replaced by the Lord Ruler, Kelsier could also  supposedly be as much of a hero of ages (as the very original candidate)?

Okay, my logic is probably not sounding so clear at this point of night...

Anyway, I'm not putting too mcuh stock in the idea of there being one true hero of ages.

although... it is the third book's title... but that just means it's been on the characters minds... so... I really want the book to come out now... I don't know how much more speculating I can do.

Maybe we should make I-Spy styled bets for random things we theorize will pop up in H.o.A.... that could be a cool thread.

Hahaha, I'm sorry, would they have preffered a Harry Potter Ending? Oh, what an epilogue...

*twitch*

Of course, then there's also the Harry Potter post-epilogue tidbits too.
... but somehow, I don't think EUOL is going to be jumping out and telling us that Hrathen was really gay?

Hahaha, I'm sorry, would they have preffered a Harry Potter Ending? Oh, what an epilogue...

Or a story which goes until the characters die of old age or syphillis (okay, not likely in a EUOL book but maybe in a Pratchett one...)? You get my drift here...

Ugh, who wants to read epiloguies that pigeonhole every character into their roles after the book is over? Yuck.
Imagination's cool. I'd like to think there's always another adventure on the horizon or whatever for the characters...

... On the subject from letters from readers, here's the fan letter excerpts James Gurney (Dinotopia) has on his page. It's pretty hilarious as most are letters from primary school children and many are kind of backhanded compliments...

and some totally random ones, like asking him what age their teacher is because she won't tell them (and evidently since he draws dinosaurs he can unravel the mystery... or something apporaching that logic)... anyway, here's the link:

It's interesting to see what kind of fan mail books from different genres get.

I definately agree that if the three systems of magic are really inter-related that it seems unfeasible for them to have not evolved at the same time, or at least not without a good reason for why one (say, allomacy) was unable to manifest as a feasible force before a given point.

Also, Is it possible, that there is some sort of balance limit across all three systems?

Like, since the rise of allomancy and the ascension of T.L.R., the number of feruchemists has decreased (as a result of T.L.R.'s actions of course), but could that also have swayed any balance between the three systems so that as a result of there being fewer feruchemists there are able to be more allomancers?

Okay, so that's not necessarilly something that's really going on, but hey, maybe it's a possibility.

I really like this thread - and sorry for any typos, I haven't slept enough.

I have a question in regards to the feruchemy/allomancy thing.

Okay, so if memory recalls feruchemy existed before allomancy, why?

Allomancy is obviously related to the mists of course isn't it? their coming over the world / the well of ascension etc.

Why *is* the well of ascension called that? because people ascend to becoming mistborn? If the well of ascension is the one source of allomancy, where was the source of feruchemy? What is it that makes allomancy and feruchemy so different?

I see the occasional episode, and I like them. I think it's legions better than most of what passes for cartoons these days.
In fact, it's kind of the modern cartoon classic, and I think it's restored my faith in domestically produced cartoons after a generally bleak era.

(except SBSQ - which generally appeals to a bit of an older audience ironically...)

Great podcast as always, however, I have to ask the opinion about books where circumstances create the main source of conflict (more so than villains)?

There are a lot of books where the circumstances are the challenges the protagonist faces, and there are an even greater number of books where the circumstances the protagonist has been pitted against exist alongside of the struggle against the so called "bad guy".

Like, for instance, The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rofthuss, I.M.O., the main source of conflict the protagonist (Kvothe)  faces in the book, and thus the main thing he has to struggle with to overcome - is actually the circumstances he is faced with being in rather than anything else. Of course, the Chandra, I think they’re called,  who were responsible at the beginning for causing his circumstances are an underlying theme in the book, however they are not really the greatest element he is in conflict with (at least, in this third of the tale).

It would be very interesting to here the Writing Excuses crew’s opinions about circumstances as a form of conflict.
