Video Games / Re: Game Ideas
« on: August 17, 2006, 03:20:47 PM »
I would really like to make a game that takes half-life mod Natural Selection to the next level.

If you're unfamilar with the game and don't feel like digging through the site, it's an RTS/FPS hybrid, where (for the marines at least) one person plays the "commander" and gets a typical minimap/macro view of the map.  He drops buildings, directs resource collection (for weapons and other items) and guides units in combat.  The units, however, are actual players who get a first person view of the battlefield and have to fight each other.

The mix of strategic skill and reflexes makes for VERY exciting matches and I'd love to throw in things like vehicles (ground and air) more than two races, and a meta game that allows a campaign instead of just individual matches.

Site News / Re: Introduce yourself - right on!

My name is Brian.

I'm 31 years old, live 20 miles outside of New York City in Long Island, NY.  I program video games for cell phones for a living and enjoy reading, playing video games, sports and practicing martial arts.

I found this site after reading a novel by Brandon Sanderson and followed his site to here.

Denver next month.

Spain the month after.

California, Oregon, Washington the month after.

East coast I'm waiting until next year, when I can pub Alcatraz as well.  (Which should give me double the money, since I can hit up Scholastic as well at Tor.)  Sorry!

I'll look forward to next year.  Planning to hit up Tor and Scholastic bodes very well for a NYC-area signing which is perfect!

Have you ever done or are you planning to do a book tour out of state?

My formula for today.

2 hours in Airport Waiting Room + 5 hour plane flight + Mistborn = paradise.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: World Fantasy Nominations
« on: June 30, 2006, 12:22:45 PM »
I didn't know about the World Fantasy Nominations before reading about it on this site.

I agree and can't think of anyone who has had a greater impact on modern adult fantasy than Robert Jordan.  I was upset when I heard about his illness but I have been reading his blog and his optimism (along with the fact that he takes the time to update his fans - even as he needs 20 hours of sleep per day) is humbling.

I don't think it's his popularity that makes him a target.  I admit that I can't keep up with him easily and I can be a lazy reader.  I believe many are in the same boat.  "Amazing" is too weak a word to describe how he builds and maintains such a complex universe and who knows how many characters.  If I had the patience to go back and read every book again before reading the newest one I'm sure I'd get a lot more out of his series.  I get through it and enjoy what I can, content to just follow the major plots as if I'm watching a movie, but I can easily see someone getting frustrated enough to close the book.

Barbara Cartland wrote over 70 books in one year, but they were romance novels so I'm not sure they actually count.

That's a new book (almost) every 5 days!  That has to be some kind of record.

Do you know if she actually wrote them in a year or did was she newly published and just dumped a stack of them on the market?

lol.  Terry probably has me beat too.  How many Discworld books are there?  Like 80?

Welcome, Brian.  If you're needing random things to read, I'm sure you've seen the WARBREAKER chapters I'm posting.  I'm afraid they're very rough yet, so don't judge me too harshly based on them.  MISTBORN will probably be the thing that will suit your tastes best.  It'll be out in a month or so.

I saw the release date on Amazon.  I'm looking forward to it.  I will definitely start reading Warbreaker.  Thank you for being so generous with your work.

Wow. Quick response.

I was kidding.  I admit that, when it comes to authors I like,  "When's the next book coming out?" is the first question on my mind.  I do, however, respect the fact that authors need to write at their own pace.  Some, like the authors you mentioned, are remarkably fast while others (i.e. George RR Martin, Kristen Britain) take their time between novels.

My name is Brian.

I recently picked up Elantris and found it to be one of the the best fantasy novels I have ever read.

I also read the main site and these forums a bit before posting and, I'm sorry to say, knowing that Mr. Sanderson reads and often responds to posts on this forum is only going to lead me to camp here and beg him to write faster :).
