Video Games / Re: Blizzard stops Console development

It's an opinion.  I've seen PC games decline pretty much every time the new consoles are about to start popping up.  In my opinion, they'll rebound  soon.

Of course game companies lose money due to piracy.  It is, however, something they've been dealing with since the beginning and I have a hard time believing that it's hurting the industry significantly more now than it has in the past.

Entsuropi is right.  Many compaines have realized that copy protection measures do more to annoy legitimate customers than they do to stop pirates.

Also, piracy has nothing to do with the recent decline in PC gaming.  Consoles are responsible for that.

The ratio of good/crappy games has remained pretty much the same over the years.  Here are a few I've played that I've found excellent and were NOT made by developers on your "good list":

Far Cry.
Freedom Fighters
Grand Theft Auto: San andreas.
The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion
Galactic Civilizations 2.
Guild Wars

Point is the EA's and Vivendis have been around for a long time and the hits keep coming in spite of them.  You may long for the days of the Original Half-Life and Baulder's Gate but in 5 years you'll long for today.

ELANTRIS SPOILERS

Kelsier is a lot easier (at least for me) to relate to than Raoden and his reaction to his circumstances seemed more plausible but I think they were at least equally tested.

Torture, slavery, and witnessing the murder of your spouse does seem a bit more traumatic than simply being thrown into a ghetto.  However, dealing with injuries that do not diminish and starvation past the point that a normal man would have died proves the equalizer in my view.

With most Windows games you can press ALT-Enter to put the game in a window and open whatever else you want.   You'll need a powerful computer to pull it off with recent 3D shooters but you should have no problems with city-sim games.

Newbie question:  Do you primarily look for reviews of various things or anything interesting?

I was really pulling for George RR Martin in the Novel category.  Sorry to see he didn't win.

Raoden and Kelsier share charisma and a "can do" attitude.  That's where I feel the similarities stop.

** ELANTRIS SPOILERS BELOW ***

Kelsier struck me as a weaker person than Raoden (From a mental standpoint - nothing to do with the relative powers of each) Aside from Kelsier's dark side, which I don't think is in Raoden's makeup,  I got the impression that Kelsier was defined by his powers; he lived for revenge and snapping into the powers of a Mistborn empowered him to get it.   Raoden went from Prince, to little more than an animal, to a near god, and remained Raoden.  The tools at his disposal changed but the same person, driven by a desire to make everything around him better, remained.  Had Kelsier not snapped into Allomancy (and, by some other miracle, escaped the Pits) I think his wife's death would have broken him.

I think it'll be like every other crackdown in digital media.

You'll still be able to get free subtitled anime, it'll just be harder to come by.  The degree of difficulty will be proportionate to the lenghts the industry is willing to go to put a stop to it.

If the US versions are released fast enough and the translations remain faithful then people will just post the production versions.  If there is a considerable delay or the translations are heavily edited for whatever reason then the fansub community will continue its work.

I finished the book and it delivered - big time.  Very well developed world, deep characters, a clever magic system, and a captivating plot.  I'm looking foward to the next one.

The ending did seem a bit rushed. It flowed perfectly until Kelsier's death and then the whole universe got turned upside down so fast I barely had time to process it.

Don't get me wrong, using Kelsier as a catalyst for revolt was brilliant.  In addition to making perfect sense. his death threw out a "nobody is safe" warning that will add massive amounts of dramatic tension to the next books.  However, the entire city in revolt, Marsh's reappearence as an Inquisitor, The death of Lord Ruler, Elend installed as King, Marsh as head of the Church. It seemed as if there could have been a whole book on those events (not that the aftermath doesn't lend itself to novels worth of material :) ) and it was a bit much for me to take in.

Overall a fantastic read.

Not since, but Starcraft (which came before) was still better.

100% Agreed. 8 years since it's release and there is still a health pro-gaming community in South Korea based on the game.

I'm now in the mood to play again.

(sigh) i wish i had any idea how and what to use to make a game. my friend has made a couple. they were 2-d but what can u expect from some 14-15 year old kids...  ;D

If you truly want to make a game then  Gamedev.net has an FAQ on how to start making games.  It answers the basic questions and points you to excellent resources on beginning programming and then using that knowledge for games.

Of course, if you're a talented digital artist or musician you can check out the "help wanted" forums and join any number of (likely non-paying) independent game projects there.  Many programmers are artisically challenged and would love your help.

Completing a game, 2D or 3D, is a remarkable achievement.  To do so at 14-15 years old is even more remarkable.  Did they release what they did?
