Title: Webcomic Review
Post by: EUOL on April 12, 2004, 08:34:08 AM
I'm thinking I need to go through all of our webcomic reviews and reassess their relative ratings.  It seems we've got too much 'high-end creep' on the reviews.  Generally, I reviewed comics I liked, which is part of the problem.  However, I think that I need to go back through them all--even the ones I didn't write--and try and streamline them so that having a high score means something.

Before I do this, I have to make certain it's all right with everyone.  I might be changing scores for reviews I didn't write.  I'll include an 'Edit by EUOL' section at the bottom, explaining what I did, what the original grade was, and why I changed it.

Does anyone have any comments or objections regarding this?

No I actualy suggested you do so several months ago.  Mainly becasue many of those comics are now dead, or different (story, theam wise).

do you think we should go through and update any old reviews?  Like how Megatokyo is no longer funny and had been turned into a romance novel.  Or how Sunday Morning Breakfast Cereal has ceasted to exsist.

edit:ah, found it in keepspace, which is the hellhole of webcomic hosting (even with a broad band connectoin it took like 5 minutes to load), but it appears to now have been updated for months.  but the comic is completely different (art and other wise) and I can't find and of the older comics from when we reveiwed it.  http://smbc.keenspace.com/

Oh go on then. Not like any of mine are in there  :D

Its the main problem of the site. We only review cool stuff. So we have a archive of high scores.

True, I've only gotten 2 free video games.  All the others I've done I've paid for.  My RPG reveiws are about 50/50 when it comes to buying them.

I need Fell and Tage's input on this before I can actually do it, I think.

Eh, me and Entropy's approvial is close enough.  If Fell or Tage get mad you can blame it on The Cheat.

High end creep seems more likely with our scale of 1-6 then it would with a 1-10 or 1-12 scale.
I dislike scales though....

EUOL, did you get the e-mail from me about comixpedia listing our scores on their site, and Fell's relpy to that e-mail?

the problem is our scale doesn't really reflect much. Few scales do. The issue is, however, that our scale DOES mean something definite, and what that means needs to be more public. A 5.5 is for most practical purposes, a perfect scord. A 5 is nearly so. Evena 4.0 is essentially a recommendation to buy unless you can only get one or two products a year.

The text is the best measure of whether it was good or not.

Sprig--Yes, I did.  I intend to email them, but I wanted to wait until I got this fixed first.

I think it sounds like a great idea.

I'll begin, then.  This won't be a complete 'new version' edit, like I've done with a few of the comics.  I'll simply check the link, make sure the comic is still going, and then re-rate it.  I'm going to use a curve for this.  It looks like we've got one 'two-clock' review.  That will become a 'one-clock' instead.  Sluggy, PvP, and 8-Bit will be sixes (because I think they represent the highest level of webcomic skill in their respective areas.  PvP as mainstream geek comic, Sluggy as story-driven comedy, and 8-Bit as wacky originality.)  Everything else will fall somewhere in-between.  However, I suspect pretty much every comic will get knocked down a clock, or at least a half.

I'd like to request that Demonology 101 remain at its current score, as it represents the best (I think) dramatic/plot-driven comic out there.

For the record I disagree with the choice to lower the score of reviews.

For the record I think Penny Arcade pwnxors all over PvP (and every other webcomic), but the fact that I'm a PA obsessive has a lot to do with that.

Hum.  PA is a kind of special case.  It's less a webcomic and more...a visual rant.  I don't know.  It's certainly one of the best out there, but it really deserves its own classification.

When you got through and update the reviews EUOL, can you make sure all of them have the comics URL at the top.  Some of them don't.
