Title: RTS on the Cheap
Post by: Mr_Pleasington on August 30, 2005, 09:33:48 PM
Though BF 2 is eating up most of my gaming time, I've picked up both Warlods Battlecry III and Battle Realms for a few bucks each in the past weeks.

WB III is very interesting.  Tons and tons of races, a great campaign system, a fun story...it almost feels like an rpg.  It's also 2D and requires little micromanagement, which I like.  It brings back memories of gaming before WC III came along, in a good way.  I don't like 'claming' resources much, though.

Battle Realms is very interesting.  It's a lot like WC III and at the same time very different.  I like the process of upgrading units and the flavor is great.  There's a lot of base management, though, which takes away from things.

I think I like Battle Realms a little more.

Anyone esle have these? Want to give multiplay a try sometime?

I haven't heard of either of these, but I've been yearning for a good RTS ever since Brood War. WC3 just didn't do it for me, sadly. I'll have to look into these sometime. I assume you were able to find these in a bargain bin somewhere?

Rome Total War is god. I adore it. It's one RTS where recruiting troops feels right, and the battles are just perfect. The AI is not brilliant (it tends to fracture it's battleline too much, which lets my republican rome army smash a hole through it) but it's just a great game.

I've not played Rome, but Medieval was good, and I want to try out Rome some time because of it.

I always thought that the Total War series would be for me...but I just can't get into it.  Huh.

As for pricing, Tage, I got Battle Realms for $6 in the bargain bin and a used copy of Warlords Battlecry III for $4 used.  If you're looking for something that's as slick and polished with about teh same scope as WCIII, check out Battle Realms.  If you want something that's a bit more old school, offers a ton more replayability, and has a lot of rpg elements, check out Warlords.

I have Battle Realms. I bought it some years after having played a demo of it, for about $10. RTS' however have never really done it for me, but that's probably because I just can't fathom all that's going on and all those numbers coming in from directions. But that's for another day.

What he said ^

Bought it for ten bucks. Cool, but I can't DO RTS games.

My Friend Has the Relm game...he really likes it.  I am going to borrow it from him to try it out.  I personally really like RTS

I have no idea why you people would waste your time with silly RTS games when you could be playing Advance Wars DS like me. Mmmm...Turn based stragety games

I do love me some Turn based strategy.

Sadly, not much of that for PCs these days :(

Final Fantasy Tactics and Orge Battles are the best turnbased games.

EDIT: you can not discuss doing illegal things on the bored thanks JP

EDIT (2):Just so you know Emulators are not illegal.  Even using them to play old games is not illegal, you can do it IF you meet certain criteria.  1) you own the game, or 2) you only use it for a 24 hour time spand......but I will not talk about them again

Rebelstar just came out for the GBA, for those that don't know it's a Turn based strategy game from the old x-com people.  Hopefully it'll be good since it's only $20.

Speaking of squad-based strategy games, Sprig, can I borrow Freedom Force vs. The Third Reich?

I just picked up Front Mission 4 which is a Tactical RPG from Square for only $15 today.  Just imagine FF Tactics but with mechs you customize instead of a Job System.

That sounds  like a really cool game what is it for?

PS2, it's over a year old and I only picked it up because of the price and it was the last copy in stock.

I played through a few missions yesterday and it's not as good as FF:Tactics and there are some annoyances with your mechs arms getting blown off and you having no weapons of any type left to use, but not bad for the price.

In the old Mechwarrior PC game we used to put all our weapons in the torso, and fill the arms with heat sinks. Then if they got blown off we could still shoot, even though we had to be careful about it.

Yeah, ditto.  Though, actually, I'd fill the legs before the arms.

Well just to make Fell even more annoyed at Nokia I read on gamespot today they have a WH 40k turn based game coming out 1Q 2006 that's going to be "as close to the tabletop rules as possible".  First RIFTS and now Warhammer, I think he's going to have to find a way to get a free phone from someone.

Suikoden Tactics is coming out for the ps2 in november, I'm a huge fan of the first Suikoden and didn't care much for the 3rd (never played the 2nd of 4th) so I'm hopeing this will be cool.  It dose look like it'll have all 108 possible player characters which could make it quite an intresting Tatical RPG.
