Evangelion
« on: May 01, 2003, 06:06:15 PM »
Hm. I have a couple of friends who i affectionatly describe as "anime freaks". One of these people is rabid about "Evangelion" and the other says that it has the best ending, ever. He also said it was probably too cheesy for my tastes.

Anyone here have an opinion on the series?
If you're ever in an argument and Entropy winds up looking staid and temperate in comparison, it might be time to cut your losses and start a new thread about something else :)

Evangelion really is excellent, but saying that it has the best ending ever is akin to my grandparents owning season tickets to an experimental theater--it's a little above their heads and they know they're supposed to like it, so they claim they do in order to look smart.

I have a friend just as rabid about this series. He has all the episodes on DVD and the couple of movies that were made.

I've seen a couple of episodes. Eh. Its alright, but I wouldn't kill someone over it. I like Robot anime's and all but there's something different about this one that makes me go "eh" and shrug. Though you say Robotech and I get as wild as an elephant in must. So ya...maybe a bit of different taste in mech anime's for me.

I don't even know were to start with Evangelion.  First off it's an interpertaion of the book of revalations, second it dosen't make sence 50% of the time and third it's realy messed up in some places.  Fells right about people who clame to understand it, you can't unless you have a higher level of conciseness then man is capable of.  That haveing been said it's still a good series and if you like anime it's worth watching.

But I know you don't watch alot Entropy so I still stick by my orignal recomendations to you:
Coyboy Bebop
Berserk

no I can't put trigun in that list.  Trigun is a freaking annoying anime with the most patetic hero ever.  It just a lame Kenshin wanabe

Oooh that hurts so.........

Fine just cause you don't like the donut loving hero, doesn't mean it's bad. He makes it funny and he gets quite serious at the end anyway. The only problem I have with it is the plot that just drags on in the middle.

I'll admit that I haven't seen all of it yet but it just annoying.  The worst offender is the character design, only the priest is cool.   And don't get me started on those two girls.  But that list above is anime Entropy, who isn't a fan of the genra, will like.  Anime fans will/do like trigun, Entropy will smash the TV when watching it.

You kinda have to watch the whole series becuase he acts like that mainly for a cover so no one thinks he is vash the stampede. But Cowboy Bebop and Berserk are definitely some of the best anime I've ever seen, haven't seen the whole series of both yet but hopefully I will. I never really liked evangelion because I watched like half an episode at a friends house and there wasn't anything I found really interesting about it.

Well I suppose I should pipe up at least a bit on this topic. I own the entire Eva series and all movies on DVD, and have spent many, many hours researching what it all means.

First, yes, Evangelion is pretty amazing. But a lot of the amazingness is couched in some pretty bizarre anime, so it can be very hard to pick up on. Second, the ending (either one of them--there are two) is a horrible wreck of a mess. Anyone who says otherwise is just trying to look smart. Don't get me wrong, the ending is pretty cool for what it is, but interpretting it is a pain in the neck, and a lot of it is just plain stupid.

I still recommend Eva to anyone who has learned to enjoy anime. It's definitely not for the uninitiated, though.

I've watched all of Eva and although I enjoyed, I'd probably not watch it again. Mostly because I hate Shinji. I trust most of you have seen End of Evangelion? I bought the DVD just to watch over and over looking for hidden means -- there are a lot.

Eva is one of those shows that is best watched with other people. It helps alot to have someone with whom you can discuss possible hidden meanings. I feel that watching Eva is like analizing contemporary art, you just can't go into it expecting simple entertainment.

Also, on Spriggin's recommendation, I would recommend Cowboy Beebop. It's very good. I'm not so keen on Berserk. It moves a little slow and some parts merit an "R" to "X" rating.

I would say your right but 10 or 15 years ago it would have recieved an X rating. Having half an epsiode where two of the main characters are naked and having sex would do that. Plus the whole sodomy subplot would also do it.

I read a very amusing thing today on a fansite. The guy suggested that the final episodes make perfect sense if you replace the word Shinji with the word GAINAX (the company that made the show), and replace "piloting Eva" with "making Evangelion." That really made me laugh.
