Pirates:  Curse of the Black Pearl
« on: July 14, 2003, 04:53:32 AM »
I was lucky enough to see this a few days back and man was it a fun time!  The plot was trite and hackneyed, but the fun level is so high that you'll never notice it.  This is the most fun I've had at a movie for a long time.   Certainly not great cinema, but definitely worth seeing if you enjoy fun summer films.

Oh, and Johnny Depp was absolutely wonderful.  He stole the scene in every shot he was in.  I can't fathom the number of role playing characters that will be based on Jack Sparrow now.

Was it just me or was Depp channeling Ozzy Ozbourn... he was great.

I think this will be the best movie of the summer.

This movie is just fun. It's great to see a movie where it seems that everyone is enjoying themselves.

I agree--it was great to see a good old-fashioned action swashbuckler, done really well. The characters were all great, and there were a ton of them. The homages to the ride were really cool (once you can get past the idea that they made a movie based on a ride...). It had one too many endings, but I liked everything else I saw. Really wonderful.

And yes, Tage, Keira Knightley IS hotter than Natalie Portman, so there. Though the two look eerily similar: Knightley is basically just a taller, blonde Portman with much more personality.

I agree with all the positive comments.

Also, Kiera Knightly, who is certainly hotter than Natalie Portman, actually played Queen Amidala's decoy double in Star Wars.

I saw this. Smashing good fun. Orlando was solid, Knightly was hot, Depp was fun and the pirate captain dude was rock solid. Fun, funny, pretty stupid.

Great stuff.

That pretty much sums it up.

You been out of town, Entropy?  You posted a lot during the last few days, as if trying to make up for lost time.

Yeah, that might be it.  Sprig and I were out of town.  I guess you finally just saw a bunch of movies that the rest of us had already discussed, so you popped into the threads suddenly.

Uh, welcome back from not being gone, then.

ok, just finally saw it last night

It was all right. Not sure why everyone I know thought it was so amazing. Yeah, there's some good action. Yeah, the acting is decent. It just didn't strike me as AMAZING! Perhaps partially because of some of the effects: they looked too mechanical, particularly when the skeletons on the ship are cleaning and stuff.

Oh, and Knightly's pretty good looking, but a little odd in a way I can't put my finger on. I can't rate her as an unqualified hottie.

Also, What's up with Depp? "ARR! I be Cap'n Boy George! Get me some makeup ye scurvy dogs! Let's form a gay pirate band!"

I thought it was Ozzy Osbourne he was trying to channel.

I saw it again on Christmas. I love it. I liked the special effects. Especially in the theatre, where they were so big. It's not the same on a TV screen, even if it's a big one.

Oh, and Kyra Knightley's too skinny. She's a stick.
