That's true.
"Magic is what makes fantasy fantastic," someone says, "you can't apply rules to them or else it loses wonder!" I respond, "Sure, but if you want to write them you will certainly want to know how they work." Writing is all about execution, and I find applying some basic laws of physics to magic systems make them more understandable and realistic. Here, I'm going to outline my basic method for developing a magic system.

because I was in my house on January 1st, I still have to pay taxes for the fiscal year July 1st 2009 to June 30th 2010.When you bought the house, did the people who who were in it on Jan 1st pay the taxes for that year? I'm assuming not.

(Lois is my favorite author, so I'd recommend almost any of her stuff, though the Sharing Knife series is best read in two-book clumps because each book is really half a book as far as plot sophistication goes.)Lois is my favorite author too.
