Books / Re: Discuss
« on: April 09, 2008, 02:17:19 PM »
I think a rating system for books would be a grand idea.  I am always tentative about picking up a new fantasy book, unless I've heard about it through a friend who has read it, because I've run into books that I didn't appreciate due to their content.  I think a little warning would be nice. Even if it is not labeled on the book itself, maybe an online site where you can look up the book and know what to expect.

As for the kids who will go straight for the M, there will always be a group like that, whether it is labeled or not.

I don't see any issue with rating labels and censorship.  You aren't keeping full citizens from reading what they want. (Kids don't count as full citizens until they can vote, so I don't see any issue with keeping younger people from the juicier stuff.) :D

I love Vin, really I do. She rocks. But I have to agree with Comfortable Madness, if we pull out all the stops and bring magic into it, it is even less  of a contest. I've never seen as much sheer earth-shattering power as Rand has. I wouldn't want to be on his bad side.

I am now reading "Great Irish Tales of Myth and Fantasy". It is a collection of really old stories from Ireland. :D

I'm hoping that grounding myself in these early myths will help in the writing process.

I tend to avoid posting my stories (in whole or in part) on publicly accessible websites such as this. If there is a private, by invitation only sub-forum, that is preferable.

I am not a published author, but I seek to one day be such. I don't want to have to deal with the ramifications of posting stories online and ruining my paid publication possibility because it was already 'published'. Magazine and book publishers (at least from my experience) want works that are completely unseen by the public and as such tend to avoid work that has been posted on the web.

Not only that but I am rather fond of my ideas and stories and don't look forward to having them ripped off or stolen by some passer through. It is not the main users of the site that I fear/don't trust. It is the public nature of any person being able to access my hard work and swiping it for their own purposes.

I try to recommend to my friends that they protect themselves and their stories by likewise not posting content online unless it is in a private forum or protected by password.

Rand can whip anyone magical blade, normal blade, or wooden stick. And has used all three.

Just started "The Knight" (Wizard Knight duology) by Gene Wolfe. I must say that so far it is quite interesting.

1. What did you want to be when you were little?

I wanted to be an archeologist. (Even before I first saw Indiana Jones, that just cemented the desire) :D

2. What do you want to be? (Doesn't have to be what you're doing right now)

I still think archeology is cool, but I would like to be an architect and revamp all the tired old building designs (especially houses, ick big ugly wooden boxes)

3. What are you doing?

I'm an intern at the USDA and I'm getting a degree in GIS.

4. What are you going to be?

I'm most likely going to be a Cartographer/ Geographer.

Hrmph!!  They should do Terry Prachett and not Terry Goodkind.  I would love a Discworld t.v. series!!!!  ;D

Indeed! The Hogfather was done excellently and I wish they would produce more of his books!

Everything Else / Re: Sad day in the church...

I was surprised and yet not surprised when I got the news (from both my sister in law and my sister). I will say that I don't think it has completely sunk in yet, as often happens in cases like this. He was and is a great man. He is now  with his wife, and I think that is awesome, he missed her so. I am sad, yet happy at the same time. I have no fear for the Church, we've always been in good hands, the same two hands as always. ;)

Books / Re: Do Dead Authors Have Rights?
« on: January 28, 2008, 03:05:00 PM »
I believe that Tolkien said that no one could possibly stuff his story into movie format, so he sold the movie rights for a dollar. Or at least that is what I heard....

If the author specifies in his/her will that they want their story to treated a certain way, then yes, we should  follow that. If not, I think it is fair game. :)

We enjoyed the Jane Austen movies (my wife and I) and thought Northanger Abbey was quite well done, though they could have made it a touch creepier and more mysterious.

We are definitely looking forward to Mansfield Park next week.
