Video Games / Brothers In Arms
« on: March 24, 2005, 03:25:01 AM »
I love first person shooters.

I love tactical wargames.

I love WWII stories.

This game is the perfect combination of FPS and wargame.  It's like being a character in a turn based game like Silent Storm.  The gameplay is great.

Plus, the personalities and sayings of your squadmates are truly impressive.

Get this game. Period.

Well, period unless you don't like FPS, tactical games, or WWII.

Everything Else / I Summon Tech Support!
« on: March 16, 2005, 09:33:02 PM »
Okay, so I've been trying to upgrade my comp to get it a bit beefier. I decide to replace my CD ROM with a DVD ROM.

Sounds easy, right?

So I take out the CD ROM, reconnect the cables to the DVD ROM (which came with few instructions) and...nothing happens.  The computer fails to recognize both that and my burner that was slaved to my CD ROM.  I can't make Windows detect it.

So I put my CD ROM back in, frustrated.  Any help?

Video Games / Pixel Shader???
« on: March 16, 2005, 05:42:31 PM »
So I just got Republic Commando.

Everytime I open the game it tells me that I don't have Pixel Shader 1.1.  Running a diagnostic confirms that it's the only requirement my computer doesn't meet.  Looking around online I cannot figure out what Pixel Shader is or how to get it.  I have the latest drivers and direct x.  Grrrr.

Help.

Suggestions Box / TWG Podcast?
« on: February 08, 2005, 07:27:59 PM »
So now that I'm an iPod nerd, I was wondering if we could push the boundaries here a bit and experiment a bit with Podcasting.

I was thinking of doing an interview with a friend of mine who is big into the RPGA and also a published gaming author.  Some sort of "Nerdery Live!" set up.

All I'm lacking is a mic, which is easily remedied.  Just wondering if this was something there is interest in.

Rants and Stuff / Yar!  iPod Woes
« on: February 05, 2005, 12:53:49 PM »
Well, my will finally broke. I did it. I splurged and got an iPod. I justify it as a reward for passing Boards. That's how I keep from feeling bad about spending my extremely fixed income.

I've been wanting one for over a year. Now I have one.

And, of course, it can't just work right out of the box. I've spent quite a bit of time researching and it looks like picking up a Firewire card will fix the problems I'm having. Sigh.

So I've ordered an Adeptec 3400 Firewire card from Best Buy that I'm going to pick up later today.   I just hope it works

I've been downloading my entire music collection into my computer.  As soon as I get this thing up and running I'll have access to my entire musical collection anywhere I go at the touch of a button.

Table-Top Games / Free GW Rulesets
« on: February 02, 2005, 12:37:41 AM »
Like GW rules, but hate giving money to the company like me?

All the Specialist games (Mordheim, Necromunda, Battlefleet Gothic, etc) have free living rulebooks for download.  No fluff, but all those sweet, sweet rules.

Suggestions Box / Help Shape The Nerdery
« on: January 23, 2005, 04:08:20 PM »
Okay folks, The Nerdery is going into it's 11th week and I'd like to know what you all would like to see in future columns.

Any suggestions?  Criticisms?  Let 'em fly if you've got them.

Video Games / The TWG Guild On CC
« on: January 20, 2005, 02:54:28 PM »
Okay folks,  I'm at a point right now where I've got a lot of characters in the mid/low teens and I'm trying to decide on who to focus on.  I really like my Dwarven Paladin on CC, and I like that I can catch you guys on there often, even if we may be seperated by different continents (in game).

Now our time zone differences and limited play time hampered our efforts to get our all-dwarf party started, but a guild is still viable.  Many of you have several Alliance characters on CC and I think we can pull it off.

So now we just need a name and some eager people.

Suggestions for a name?

Books / The Vampire Earth Series
« on: January 19, 2005, 02:15:29 AM »
I was just looking for some cheese horror/action to waste away the minutes between patients when I saw this series, written by EE Knight, being talked about over at the Pinnacle forums.  They're making a Savage World plot point book out of it, in fact.

So I picked the first two novels up.

Cheese, but excellent cheese.  Like fondue.  Good action, nice  backstory...I'm hooked.  I'm eager to see where he's taking these and hoping he doesn't jump the shark anytime soon.

I only tread with trepidation because the last cheese horror series I tried was the Anita Blake series, which we all know is just soft-core porn.

Video Games / Grrr...XBOX Probs
« on: January 17, 2005, 01:23:54 AM »
So I've neglected my XBOX for a week or so as WoW has hooked me.  It worked fine last time I played.  Now, a week later, with no known tragedies affecting it, it refuses to power up.

No power at all.  I've tried many different outlets.  I hope it's just my cable and not my power source.  I guess I have to call tech support.

Sigh.

Role-Playing Games / Woo Hoo!  My name in print!
« on: January 16, 2005, 03:22:18 PM »
Picked up the Castle And Crusades PHB to find that my group got listed as playtester credits.

Not much, but enough to get me to buy the book.  Woo Hoo!

Video Games / WoW:  Guild Searchin' and Stuff
« on: January 11, 2005, 01:15:07 AM »
So I started playing an Undead Warlock on Kilrogg and have been having a blast with it.  Way more fun than my NE warrior.  The problem is that I know no one who plays Horde on Kilrogg and I'm such a solo machine that I rarely need to group.

It's frustrating as I'd like to join a guild, but have no prospects.  I'm like the wallflower at the prom.

Sigh.

Role-Playing Games / Decipher brings back LOTR RPG
« on: January 09, 2005, 08:29:57 PM »
Wow, this is interesting.  I really didn't think they would come back to RPGs after the big fiasco of closing down their RPG line.  Check it out:

Role-Playing Games / Heroquest...Jeffe, help me out
« on: January 06, 2005, 12:32:55 AM »
So after looking a bit more in HQ I decided to pick it up for use in homebrew worlds.  Despite Glorantha's fame, I just can't get into the setting.

I do like the system though...but char gen is not expllained all that well, particularly magic.  When you choose common magic can you just pick five from anywhere in the book?  I'm confused.  Example me, maybe.

Movies and TV / Arrested Development
« on: December 23, 2004, 01:49:37 PM »
I watched a bit of the first season while it was on...enough to convince me to pick it up on DVD.  Man, am I glad I did...best sitcom since Seinfeld, hands down.  No moral lessons, no big revelations, just pure comedy.

I'm hooked.

Sadly, I haven't been hooked enough to watch Season 2 while it airs...I'll just wait for DVD for that one too...
