Alright, I'm going to try this again and be less cynical about it.
I'd like to start some kind of poetry group where there is much discussion, collaborating, and writing of poetry among people around here. But not just here, friends of people are much obliged to join in on this.
Maybe twice a month during the week for a few hours would be good.
I talked to Fell, and he expressed some interest in the group (and poetry in general), and I am hoping to get some more people in on this.
So, now I ask, who is interested and when is best?
-
hey Gemm do you have any of your poetry posted anywhere? if it's alright with you, i would like to read some of it.
-
I would rather vomit on you and ingest my own innards than listen to the drivel that spills from your mouth. (http://tronrpg.blogspot.com)
That's a working title.
-
I like the title, you should make it the official and not just the working one.
-
You're right. It does have a j'neseque to it.
-
Anyways, I'd like to try and stay on topic as much as possible and leave current works out of this for now. (I'm allowed since this is the only thing I am not humble about at all.)
So.... yeah. Anyone. Anybody. Someone? Interested?
-
I am interested in a "the idea of this scares the freaking crap out of me because I've never had anyone critique my poetry before and I don't know that I'm actually any good at it" sort of a way.
But I'd be interested. Were you thinking an IRC sort of thing?
And I think you should hit up Jeffe. Because he's a good poet. Jeffe, you looking at this?
-
Yes, I believe irc would be a good place to do this.
There is no right or wrong in poetry; there is also a major wrong in poetry. But these things will be pointed out by poets like myself, and possibly anyone else that joins.
Jeffe would be a cool bean to have around if he ever was around any more.
There's no reason to be scared of this. It's entirely awesome to write poetry, and I'd have to say it's the thinking man's fiction, in the sense that it makes you condense your words and be rthymic and flowery at times when you may be thinking "what in the world am I writing?"
But yes... I'll give this another week to build up any premise and then set a date for the first meeting. Anyone who shows up will rock, and those who don't will be labeled "Terd."
-
You're right. It does have a j'neseque to it.
I assum you mean Je ne sais quoi (French for "I don't know").
I can't join, even if I were doing more than haiku currently, on the basis that you believe "there is no right or wrong in poetry." This is a fundamental philosophical disagreement I suppose we have that cannot be resolved.
-
SE, there are rules, as in all forms of writing; however, sometimes those rules will be broken to redefine convention.
So, as you can see, you may be right. Also, you may never actually be right. This is why I dislike critical theories, too much on the table of "maybes."
Anywho, next week the 7th of September, between the hours of 5 pm and 7 pm I will be on irc.esper.net in channel #PoetryGroup.
Be there, or be reformed.
-
yes, you should break rules in all writing
but there are still *right* and *wrong* times to break them.
-
Exactly, and these are things that can be discussed at meetings.
-
it may sound pedantic, but I still can't take the use of the phrase "no right or wrong," even if you don't mean it as libertine as it sounds. Because, frankly, most people will take too much liberty and create some really horrid stuff. Better to prevent rather than correct.
-
Right = concrete images and phrases.
Wrong = abstractions and poorly written indecencies.
-
Is that 5-7 EST?
-
yes, eastern time. I forgot to mention that bit.
-
Yes, this will be tonight. Yes, it will be from 5-7 pm est time. Yes, there will be cookies. Yes, I am not completely honest.
-
Ok, forget the meeting of persons in a single collective to pass their minds to one another for a few short hours. Now I am thinking (instead of just abandoning this project like I was thinking of doing not more than 2 hours ago) that we will post our poem here, or a link to the poem on your blog or wherever, and then we can comment upon it here, or there, or anywhere you want!
Right? Sound good? Better? Bestly?!
-
Guess I'll get this going then.
Here's (http://tronrpg.blogspot.com/2006/09/when-i-will-be-45-i-must-have-done.html#links) a poem I wrote monday and am quite proud of. Was fun to write and imagine what life may be like for myself in 20 some years.
-
Good poem Gemm.
I especially liked the vivid imagery of the mighty hunter superimposed over the wife beater. Nice.
-
Thank you Skar. I am flattered you even took the time to look at it, least of all comment on it at all.
However, I have another poem I just wrote today (not more than 10 minutes ago) that I am particularly fond of already, if not only because of the "song" it was inspired by.
Here's (http://www.blogger.com/comment.g?blogID=5954810&postID=115868203269240372) the link, and I think if, after reading it, you listen to the song you will be pleasantly pleased!
Anyone else going to post some poetry pieces/topics around these here parts?
-
Hooray! New Poem (http://tronrpg.blogspot.com/2006/09/dilated-symphony-i-tried-to-understand.html#links) that helped form a new series of poems I'm going to start working on.
This one is about a co-worker. There's another one a few days ago that was written about another one. Strangely enough these are both about female co-workers. But avast! I will write one about a male team member post-haste!
Now, someone ELSE post a freaking poem before I rename this thread "Gemm's thread blog about his poetry blog." Poozers!

Here are two poems I wrote last Saturday, while I was doing laundry. For some reason the mad rush to get ready to leave on vacation made my brain start thinking in free verse fragments, rather than long sentences. The situation wasn't helped by the fact that I get really REALLY anal when doing my laundry.
Thoughts on Laundry
In Heaven
your favorite clothes NEVER
stain
rip
shrink
fade
or wrinkle.
Classic Pieces
My favorite purple tee
has a sparkly message written across the front:
Old Navy
Beach Club
2003.
Shirts with the year they were bought
displayed prominently on the front
are a real quick way to let people know
exactly how old your clothes are.
Do not invest
in these.

a quick one before I go
A license to kill with poetic driving
Vehicular mans laughter
Oh baby thats what I am after
thank you very much

Here's (http://tronrpg.blogspot.com/2006/07/sense-of-grand-scale-of-equal.html#links) one from a few months ago that I was just rereading and remember it being reather fun to write.
-
yeah, new poem: http://tronrpg.blogspot.com/2006/10/just-as-dry-just-as-dry-as-every-other.html#links
enjoy it, it's about the recent storm we had.
