NaNoWriMo tracker planning
« on: October 21, 2004, 07:23:59 AM »
SE, I was just thinking over what to do for the NaNoWriMo tracking system you wanted.  Thought I'd send you an e-mail with what I was thinking so I can get started on this soon so I have have it done before the first.

1) user regester, just like twg's.  Simple database stuff, or you can add everyone via thelemurs admin section (add new users).

2) log-in, here a person could enter their title, link to their stories (if the want) and enter their new pagecounts.  For page counts I was thinking just an add a total, not enter the full total.  So if you had 23,000 words done and then write 2,000 you would just enter 2,000 and the site would add the 2 together.

3) on the main page have a chart that would show each users current page count, probaly a bar graph.

4) Maybe a calender that would mark what your page total should be and would list who's on target for the 50k.  This might not go in since it would take a bit of codeing and not sure if you want.

Let me know

well, I like all those ideas, and I had the "who's on goal" thing last year. The easiest way is just to do the math at the beginning, so each day has a total word count that needs to be done, and if you have that or more, you're on target.

The only thing is with #2. The way I did word counts was to look at the total count, since I had it all in one document and earlier words might get written. SO the easiest thing for a user to do is do the word count on word, and enter the grand total in. The site should do the subtraction, rather than the addition.

Oh, and do you mind if it's in flash?  might be easier for me if it is.

Here's a nice little tack board for your own self. http://erikbenson.com/nanowrimo-report-card.xls

You can track yourself, and keep little notes. And other useful things. Have fun.

Ok, I've finaly set upon something I like, though I have to redo some of the backend to get it to work.

On the main calender page each day will have the day, goal, #of words typed that day (for all participents) and % of people that reached that day's goal.  Then when you click on the day it'll goto a new page that will list all the individual stats.

will it let us type in just our current total, figuring out the daily number based on what we'd done previously?

It seams to be working now, but for a while it wouldn't actualy save things to it, which was weird.  Anyway I was hopeing to use that as an excuse since I'm still working out the best way to layout the database, but I'll probaly go with what I originaly planned since there aren't too maby people that will be viewing this, so it dosen't matter how efficent it is.

http://writers-group.org/NaNoWriMo/2004/cal.php is how the actual calender is looking, I don't have the day and user stats up yet.
