Brandon Sanderson / Re: First Interlude *Way of Kings SPOILERS*

What most convinces me that Hoid wrote the section 2 epigraphs is this one, from Chapter 26, page 368:

Quote
I am being chased. Your friends from the Seventeenth Shard, I suspect. I believe they're still lost, following a false trail I left for them. They'll be happier that way. I doubt they have any inkling what to do with me should they actually catch me.

The pursuers are chasing the author of the epigraphs. When we met them back in the interludes, we learned they were chasing Hoid. So, the author of the epigraphs is Hoid.
You're assuming that they were the pursuers he was talking about.

It's certainly possible, but it's not confirmed.

I know the man isn't clubs by the way, I was just trying to make the point that similarity does not mean two people are the same ;)
Well, the clincher for me is that the words aren't just similar, they're exactly the same. And the fact that he looks like Galladon, talks like Galladon (understand, friend?), and has a similar personality (if the nickname is accurate) makes it unlikely that Brandon would accidentally throw in such a major similarity.

If it were Kaladin or Dalinar or some other character using a Dula word, then yeah, I'd let it go.

But if it looks like a duck, talks like a duck, and acts like a duck...

I've heard people saying something about the 17th shard being a group of people that investigates the activites of the 16 shards. I think that's info direct from Brandon, but I don't have a source.

That's my understanding of it. They are planet-hoppers like Hoid, or something. However, I couldn't venture a guess why they are apparently immortal.
Unless they're Elantrians.

Or infused with the power of a shard, like Rashek.

And then, of course, there are the two short stories he wrote. Three, if you count the Elantris one.

I would assume she didn't want to sell the shardblade for fear of attracting attention to herself.

First off, how would you approach someone with an offer like that? She may have been afraid that anyone who could actually buy it would just kill her and take it. Or worried that they would try to figure out how she got it, and learn that she killed her father.

I'm really not convinced that the part 2 epigraphs are written by Hoid. The only connection is the sarcastic tone and the knowledge of shards... and to be honest, we don't even know how much Hoid knows about the shards, and he's hardly the only sarcastic character around.

And is there any 'Skai' sounding word in the book?
Scadrial is all I can think of, but... I think the similarity there is just a coincidence.

Quote
I don't think it's Galladon.  Roshar is too far away for them to cover up their Elantrianness with illusion.  Also, going to Teod does not make Raoden appear less Elantrian, so I think their appearance is not tied to the city once they have fully transformed...  Clubs is every bit as grumpy as Galladon, and yet they are not considered the same person.
True, but Clubs doesn't speak Dula. And he doesn't look exactly like Galladon, either.

At the very least, the similarity is highly suspicious.

Also, it's possible that getting further from Sel (and therefore the Dor) would cause the "Elantrian-ness" to fade. Going away from Elantris means moving away from the hub of the AonDor. Moving away from Sel separates you from the Dor.

Maybe.

There are other characters that get ignored. Tklakv (or however you spell it) got some interesting character development then vanished.

It wouldn't surprise me at all if these guys show up again later on.

Elantris is on Sel, yeah.

Or maybe they used the teleportation Aon. We saw in Elantris that it can take people beyond the range that Aons are effective. It might work for interplanetary travel, although to be honest, that seems like a bit of a stretch.
That's a possibility, but that would be a very one way trip.  Unless something really significant happened that we're not aware of, I doubt Raoden and Galladon would be willing to up and leave the whole planet like that.
True.

Of course, since Raoden and Galladon are immortal, we have no idea what kind of timeframe we're talking about. For all we know, the chapter 2 epigraph is a reference to Rayse completely destroying Sel.

Although, again, it's unlikely.

It's also possible that (they think) that Hoid can take them back once they find him.

No ... but not all hope is yet lost for those who hope for a chance to read this. Don't feel like I can say any more at this point, though. Don't want to lose my head to the evil overlord.
Evil Undead Overlord.

Thanks.
I'm smacking myself in the head for missing such obvious clues.
Hey, you're not the only one. I finished the book, came on the forums, saw this thread, and had the same reaction.

"Shallan has a shardblade?! When did that happen?"

Sorry for being a noob, but on which chapter does it say Shallan has a shardblade?
I focused most of my attention on the chapters set on Shattered Plains and skimmed over everything else, since one of the non-spoiler review gave me the impression that Shallan's storyline was basically 10% introduction and 90% exposition. That and I couldn't wait to finish Kaladin's storyline, hence I skipped around 200 pages.

I'm in the process of rereading the book more thoroughly, but can someone save me the trouble and point me to the right chapters. Maybe I misread Shardblade as Soulcaster while I went through her chapters.
In chapters 7 and 8, there are very short references, and it never uses the word Shardblade distinctly.

The passage zebobes quoted above is one of them. Then, in chapter eight, she mentions having a secret that waited "ten heartbeats away".

Elantris was basically a giant map/model of the land itself, which was required for it to channel the Dor.

1. When the earthquake created the chasm, the land no longer matched Elantris (since the chasm did not run through Elantris). It was still there, but trying to reach it would be like using a map of Africa to find your way around Texas. Once Elantris was "repaired", they could once more reach the Dor.

2. I'm not really sure, here. I just woke up, so someone else can correct me if I'm wrong, but I got the sense that AonDor is just one specific manifestation of the Dor as a whole.

Or maybe the city was always there, created by the Shard of Adonalsium on Sel.

3. I don't think you find out what happened to them.

By the way, if you haven't read it yet, I recommend  you read The Hope of Elantris, a short story Brandon wrote to fill in a minor plot hole.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Other Writers Like Brandon?

Saberhagen is a good author, but I feel his characters are often somewhat bland.

Brandon tends to use his characters as a focus, with the magic and setting forming the backdrop. Saberhagen puts the magic center stage, and the characters feel secondary.

That's not to say the characters are entirely one-dimensional, but they're not well developed, either.

That's how I see it, anyways.

Zelazny is a good author, I agree, though I'd recommend skipping the last five Amber books.

Now I wish Brandon had used a different term for people with Shardblades.

This is gonna get really confusing.
