Well, as you all probably know, this whole ALCATRAZ book thing has been quite the ride. A book I expected to sell for maybe five grand ended up going for much more, and we've all been a little stunned at its progress.
Well, a producer just called my agent and asked about optioning the film rights. The book isn't even out yet. Sheesh.
Now, this doesn’t mean that the book will be made into a movie. Heck, it doesn't even mean that it will get optioned. 99% of all movies that people THINK will get made never make it that far. However, it's kind of fun to hear.
-
Wow, that's awesome. Congrats.
-
Super congrats!!! I know you don't care so much for movies but from what I've seen I think it would be a great hit to turn it into a movie. Do you know which studio was wanting it?
-
Rainbow,
I'd rather not give details until deals are final--which this is NOT at all. This was just a producer asking if we'd sold rights yet, wanting to investigate the possibility of buying them. Not an offer by any stretch of the imagination. Still, it's fun.
-
Many congratulations. Optioning is basically free money, when you get right down to it. Joshua should get it into a Hollywood bidding war--now THEN you'd be seeing the moola.
-
I think Alcatraz would make a way fun movie. Even though it probably won't happen, it's still fun to think about! Congrats!
-
My question is: how on earth did he even hear about it?
-
MovieScript Gnomes, a distant relative to the Underpants Gnome.
-
ARCs (Advance Reader Copies) of the book went out via Scholastic to news and media sources in the middle of February.
-
Indeed wacky.
As far as sets and length go, it would be far easier to make Alcatraz into a movie than anything else you've written. Its narrative quirks would be hard to deal with though, unless they just ignored them.

Just have him talk to the camera ala Ferris Buler.
Also make sure you don't sell the rights to the Chinese mafia. ;)
-
Congratulations! It sounds like it could be a lot of fun :)

So the Italian mafia is A. O. K.?
As well as the Yakuza?
-
That's great, Brandon. Even optioning isn't the kind of thing that happens every day.
-
And Brandon's plot to take over the world moves another baby step forward. Bwa ha ha.

Surreal news!
I am ecstatic for you. This has to be one of the finest NaNoWriMo success stories of all time.
You should let NaNoWriMo know about the success of Alcatraz, they could feature you on their site as a source of inspiration. ;D

That's way awesome. It seems like fantasy movies for young adults is way popular, so it's very possible.
-
This just makes me that more anxious to read this book.
Is there a release date yet?
-
October 1st I believe.

Curious...
Would this "inside joke" have anything to do with what happened to David (Wolverton) Farland?
-
...I would guess "yes." >_>
(I had forgotten about that story...)
-
Wow! How very cool!
(Now I want to know what happened to David (Wolverton) Farland.)
