Brandon Sanderson / Re: Mistborn: The Retirement Years
« on: September 10, 2008, 10:19:07 PM »
This is an interesting thread.

I think I might have to investigate this further at work tomorrow.  :)

For now though, I'll echo most of the sentiments expressed here so far and add a few of my own.

In addition to the rising cost of metals, certain rules would have to be amended in regards to sporting events. Take weight-lifting for example. Pewter would have to fall under "performance enhancing" drugs.  ;D Same for a Feruchemist who takes part in marathons and stuff like that. Wouldn't want them looking like they can't run until the final lap and then all of a sudden turn into the Flash and smoke everyone else.

Ah, I probably should have reworded that differently lol.

I meant to say I don't rely on one primary news source. If I find a headline that's intriguing to me, I'll look for it on at least three or four other news sites. After I get all the sides of the story, I'll go to other news site and read nothing but comments from people (admittedly all people have biases, but it just helps my thinking process) before I form my opinion.

I agree.

Most mainstream media is horribly on wither one side or the other. There are very few who actually are impartial and non partisan.

I think one of the problems is that most news agencies often misquote people (recently with Obama) and runs it as a headline item. And there are people that will still buy into it just because one newspaper reported it.

I very rarely rely on mainstream media for news, only because it serves no purpose.

I'd rather take the T into Boston that drive (I hate, hate, HATE driving in big cities  ;D), but I see what you're getting at. To be honest, I just can't put it out of my mind until I get some sort of resolution, be it good or bad.

Books / Re: Best book you've ever read...
« on: September 09, 2008, 08:25:30 PM »
"Best" is really subjective to taste, but I'll lend my thoughts (even though they've already been pretty much already mentioned lol).

To go along with a point that was mentioned, for me at least, I know that my definition of "the best" book has varied as I got older.

When I was three years old, at least once a year until I was old enough to read them myself, my dad would read me the Lord of the Rings trilogy. His father read it to him, and I will read it to my child if I ever have one. That takes the childhood favorite category, although I still consider it one of the best I've ever read.

In my high school years I went off on a reading binge and started reading anything and everything I could get my grubby hands on.  ;D I think out of that era, I'd have to say Les Miserables took the cake on that one. And yes, the unabridged version. At the time it was like nothing I had ever read and I loved it. Along with that, I would have to say the original Dragonlance Chronicles (Autumn Twilight/Winter night/Spring Dawning/Summer Flame). Another high school fave was The Matarese Circle by Robert Ludlum.

And yes, I'll admit it too, Elantris/Mistborn top the list for right now.

In more Palin related news, when she was Mayor of Wasilla, the town charged rape victims for their own Rape Kits. Am I the only one who sees a problem with this?  ???

I love my country and want to see it move forward towards the kind of country that our Founding Fathers wanted. The last 8 years, complete with utter disregard to the Constitution, only add to the debate. If we our leaders cannot even follow the highest law in the land, and then when they are called out on it, claim "Executive Privilege", it makes me sick. But I'm getting off topic.

To lighten up the thread a bit, here's a funny and well done video of McCain getting "Barack-Rolled" at the RNC.

That....was probably one of the most interesting things I've ever read Gorgon.  :D

I really don't know how to respond.  ;D

Thanks for all the responses! It is a crazy situation that I have no clue how to rectify, so I'm going to take SarahG's advice and just back off. She knows where I live if she needs to contact me, our town is a small podunk town in the middle of nowhere, so we only live like 5 minutes from each other.

Miyabi, I wish it was something more than friendship, but it never evolved past friendship, due to my cowardice to not come forward and just speak my feelings. That part I'm guilty on. In high school, I flirted with her a little, mostly sending flowers and poems anonymously.  Eventually I told her, which was right before graduation. Four years later, she still says she saved the poems.

Women just confuse me lol.

I'm probably going straight to hell for laughing at my friends joke, but I couldn't help it. We were at a Chinese buffet and there was this horrendously overweight woman wearing a really tight Confederate flag t-shirt (scarred my eyes to look at her) and my friend says:

"Let's push her down and see if the South will rise again."

Like I said, going straight to hell. At least I admit it.  ;)

Ok, so I have this "friend" who I've known since elementary school. We've been on again/off again friends, by that I mean shortly before we graduated we had a spat and stopped talking to each other. After graduation, she went to college and I joined the Navy. I didn't come home for about two years, and happened to run into her at the gas station. It seemed that the past was the past and all was forgotten/forgiven. We began to talk again and rebuild our friendship. When I was stationed in Maryland,  she sent me a Christmas card (only person to do so) and called to wish me a happy birthday (again, only one to do so with the exception of family).

She was seemed genuinely interested in me coming home. She'd talk about all the fun things we were going to be able to do, since we really didn't have any time to do anything after we graduated.

So much to my surprise and confusion, when I got my honorable discharge and came home, she wouldn't answer my calls. She is avoiding me for some reason, and it is really making me mad because I didn't do anything to warrant this kind of avoidance.

At first I thought it was just a lot of cases of bad timing, but after leaving messages with every single member of her family, as well as the answering machine multiple times, I knew she was avoiding me. I learned from my friend that she has a new boyfriend (she has had really really bad relationships in the past, domestic abuse and stuff like that).

I know her new boyfriend, he is, for lack of better words, an a-hole. I guess my rantage boils down to the fact that I hate this feeling that I did something wrong and I don't know what it is. I know I didn't do anything, but I don't understand how other people's psyches work.

 ???

I'm not sure I understand your question....then again I am extremely tired and should be in bed.  :D

Are you asking if,  in the event of some actual progress in this country towards a Libertarian state, would I be involved? I think the answer is a most definite yes. I am already semi-involved in various grassroots campaigns in my home town, and am actually pondering running on a Libertarian Ticket in my state.  :)

I'm guessing the only person who knows the answer to that is Sarah Palin. I think the list would be available, if she didn't get called out on her b.s. and had to step back.

Oh, and high five Miyabi, Libertarian to Libertarian.  :)
