Brandon Sanderson / Re: Larasium?
« on: April 08, 2010, 02:13:01 PM »
Wasn't it said that an alloy of Larasium and another Allomantic metal would create a Mistling that could burn that metal.  Ajtium Mistlings (Seers) have been shown so I would assume that a Larasium-Atium alloy would just create a Mistling who can only burn Atium.
And that's the most obvious answer. But it's said that an Atium alloy with any metal would cause "various expanded physical and mental allomantic effects", or something like that. Besides, I don't think that Brandon would solve such interesting problem in such a way.

I am quite certain that it is Allomancy is of Preservation, Hemalurgy is of Ruin, and Feruchemy is of both.

Even aside from my memory of the quote, Lerasium is Preservation solidified, and it makes you an Allomancer, not a Feruchemist.
Exactly.
Feruchemy - balance
Allomancy - Preservation
Hemalurgy - Ruin

And we aren't talking about Larasium now, but about potential Larasium-Atium alloy (my proposed name for this is laratium). And my theory is that such metal would make you into a Feruchemist.

Books / Re: What are you reading, part 3
« on: April 06, 2010, 01:03:50 AM »
I am now re-reading "Pan Lodowego Ogrodu" by Jarosław Grzędowicz. (There are three published tomes, but sequels are in writing)
In english it would be like "The Lord of the Ice Garden". But believe me, it sounds better in Polish.
And I must say, it's one of the best things I have ever readed. Polish is complex, right, but reading Polish books, especially from native writers, it's a far, far better experience than reading English ones.

The plot of "PLO" is set in the future - people can now travel to other solar systems without any problem. And after years of space exploration they find something unique - other civilization. However, even if the natives look and behave just like humans, they are stuck in Middle Ages-like era.
Several groups of humans are sent to the planet to examine everything - natives' culture, flora, fauna, stuff like that. Also, a rule is set - no human is allowed to in any way disturb the culture and reveal himself.
But after some time, one of the scientific groups get lost. They literally disappear, not leaving any message or trace.
Unfortunately, the Rule says that sending an army there is not an option. So, one single soldier is send in a rescue mission - a soldier with best possible training and with biological implant that gives him unbelievable physical and mental possibilities.
But even that isn't enough to prepare him to what he will see in that world...
World in which, apparently, magic DO exist.

So, this book is, in fact, an science-fiction and fantasy in the same time.
Believe me, you can't NOT love this book. Great ideas, ultrarealistic characters and one of the best main protagonists of all the time. If anyone would ever get to learn Polish , know this - these books alone are enough reason to learn this language.

Only one solution I see for this is making Atium an automatic dodge/attack system. You won't really get to see the shadows, but your character will automatically avoid all incoming attacks while burning atium.
That seems like a good idea for me. Many online games give players some kind of "killing-machine-boost" to gain.

Apparently you missed the part I'll put in bold here:
Not really.  Actually showing the single Atium shadow of someone who's not burning Atium would be problematic, but I think just giving a best-guess display based on assuming the character would keep going at his same direction and speed would be a reasonable handwave, and the game-mechanical effect would simply be near (or actually) perfect dodging and accuracy.  For Atium vs Atium, the shadows don't actually show anything useful, so you could just show a ton of random shadows darting everywhere.

I didn't, I just didn't understand it correctly. I thought you meant showing the player an estimation of how would the enemy behave if he acts like he did before, and the player would have to dodge it manually.

But you're missing one thing - we are talking about an alloy here.
The larasium-atium alloy wouldn't come from Sazed, but from humans, smelting these two metals into an alloy. Now if Sazed would ever want to put both Shards into a new metal, it wouldn't be the same substance as the larasium-atium alloy we're talking about.
As I see it...
Sazedium - metal created by both Shards together.
Larasium - alloy created by melting each Shard's metals together.
Would it be the same? Well, THAT's the real discussion topic.

As I thought about it, I have a theory...
Burned Sazedium/Laratium will make you into an Feruchemist.
Why? Because it would take the power of Larasium and add an equal dose of Ruin to it. Instead of giving the power of Preservation, it would now grand the power of balance.

And there's one problem I just noticed. If it would be a multiplayer game, we will have to say goodbye to Atium. I think it's obvious, why.

I don't see this working. Even the "best guess" system is a stretch, but even if it would do the trick in the game, how would you solve the rest of atium effects?
It's not just looking into the future, it's also processing the information, basically giving your brain an enormous boost. How would you simulate this?
It's, unfortunately, unsolvable - for both multiplayer and singleplayer.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: On Feruchemical 'Mistings'
« on: April 05, 2010, 08:24:59 PM »
One thing to keep in mind when coming up with these names is that the Allomantic misting names are mostly slang, which is often bases around wordplay and popular concepts.  So don't try to make them too cerebral or specific.  It's not about what it actually does as much as it is about what people think it does.

Yeah, but the people in the next possible Mistborn will have much more knowledge about "what it does", because Mistings will be much more common. And don't forget about the scientific researches that will be already done on the topic - it would be an urban world after all.
So that takes away all the mistic aura around feruchemy and allomancy.
Of course that people will use slang names, but we should think of scientific names as well.

Well, for Iron and Steel powers I see a solution.
When you are flying around in the city, a Spiderman-like system could be used. You don't exactly aim at what object you pull, you would just move "over there" and the character would automaticaly pull/push the metal objects around.
I also strongly suggest to not show the lines to the metal objects, but make these objects glow visibly while burning steel/iron. That would do the trick.
For a fight, well, I see only one possiblity - a combo system like in, for example, Enter the Matrix or even in mentioned Spiderman games. These combos would include all the tricks you can do in Mistborn world, including combos with Iron/Steel disarming, offensive Brass/Zinc attacks and stuff like that.

That's not the problem, if you don't want to have exact control of how the metal is used. But otherwise it's impossible.

And there's one problem I just noticed. If it would be a multiplayer game, we will have to say goodbye to Atium. I think it's obvious, why.

I think this reasoning is wrong.
Sazed is not a power himself - he is the consiousness that hold those two (separated) powers together. Atium is still atium, larasium is still larasium, for the powers aren't connected - they are just controlled by one entity.

But I like how "sazedium" sounds.

If you guys are planning to make an Mistborn Mod for a game, I'm in.
I can provide textures and some ideas for gameplay.

I just thought about something...
We know that for every normal metal there is one working alloy.
We know that both Larasium and Atium can be alloyed with all of the basic metals.

But could there be an alloy of Larasium and Atium?
Laratium maybe?

Ruin and preservation working together ala Sazed is what we'd probably see if any two Shards of Adonalsium worked together. :)
Any two that fit each other as perfectly as Ruin and Preservation do.

But still, the regeneration/immortality lerasium effect is one of the most probable theories.
Hmm...
Ruin + Preservation = God
These two complete each other, so I think that lerasium and atium complete each other like this too. I guess that someone burning both atium and lerasium would be invincible.
That's why this theory fits. Atium for perfect offence, lerasium for perfect defence.

My second thought is - maybe if lerasium is burned with any other metal, it would enchant not only the Mistborn, but the metals themselfes? We didn't exactly see the effect of lerasium burned by a Mistborn, but maybe that's the trick - to make metals that already are inside his stomach much longer, if not forever?

TLR lied about some of those things, or encouraged rumors that were not true.
But, like, all of them? It's impossible for a man, no matter how powerful, to take control of almost whole world and not get almost-killed even once, or isn't it?

Brandon Sanderson / Re: **SPOILERS! The Shards of Adonalsium
« on: April 01, 2010, 04:49:58 PM »
But the Dor is described several times as a massive, unthinking force that is trying to push out of a space that is way to small for it.  ???
That gave me an idea. What if this Shard is, like Ruin or Preservation, made of force and a mind, but if the mind can't handle the power? Like, it wants to keep it inside the planet, but it's still leaking out?
And another speculation out of this one...
Maybe the pool is made by this mind to make the Dor go back to the planet? It destroys the body, then forces the Dor connected to it back inside.
