review: Dies the Fire

see it here: http://www.timewastersguide.com/review/1573/Dies-the-Fire

I have a copy should anyone wish to borrow it.

I really liked this book. It's been over a month since I finished reading it and I still think about things that happened in this book (this is rare for me).

I think the fact that gun powder stopped working would drive me to crazy to read this book it's one thing to say tech (like Computers might) but another to say simple chemical reactions stop working.  Also it's not like there wasn't gunpowder in the middle ages.
Screw it, I'm buying crayons and paper. I can imagineer my own adventures! Wheeee!

Gunpowder not working, but fire still igniting, makes me suspect there's more to the Change than meets the eye--especially given that there are sequels. If it never ends up getting explained, though, I would agree that that's a pretty lame move on the writer's part.

If you're interested in an exceptional yet highly depressing post-apocalypse book, Nessa, I can loan you "the Road" by Cormac McCarthy. There's even less explanation of what happened and why, but it's...not "good" I guess, but certainly 'haunting."

Or you can just watch Reign of Fire and get your weekly dosage of  McConaughey-Man-Meat.

Thanks, Sprig, but I've already had my yearly dose of M-Man meat.

Thanks, too, to Fell, but I'm not a fan of depressing books. Even if they're well written. For example, The Lovely Bones was well-written, but I found the depressing ending personally unsatisfying. I try to avoid having depressing thoughts thrust on me.

The Road has a vaguely happy ending, in the sense that it's less depressing than the rest of the book. Does that count?

By the way, Nessa: my doctor has finally seen my scan results and approved me for surgery, but since gall bladder removal is not considered an emergency surgery we're having trouble getting anyone to do it before August 14. If your husband knows a guy who knows a guy who takes Altius insurance (possibly taking it in small, unmarked bills in an empty parking garage), let me know.
