I saw this artical today, and thought it was really cool and just wanted to share it. I think it's really awesome, both his creative thinking, and the fact that the school supported him enough to vote him into position.
Tux and tiara? Gay teen voted prom queen
LOS ANGELES - An openly gay teen has been voted prom queen at his Los Angeles high school in a campaign that began as a stunt but ended up spurring discussion on the campus about gender roles and popularity...

That is absolutely amazing!
-
I find that disturbing and for reasons other than his homosexuality... i mean a queen is female pure and simple and even a sex change doesn't really give you the means to give birth so a guy can never really become a chick... but then again this is my opinion and i think to fight natural laws is kinda ridiculous
-
How is being a queen a result of natural laws??
-
I think he means that women are queens, and not even a sex change can truly turn a man into a woman.
-
Oh, thanks, I get it now…but I think you (Kaz) missed the point, then. Sergio (or whatever the kid's name is) isn't trying to turn into a woman.
-
Kaz is just wondering why he wants to be a Queen as opposed to King.
-
I think he was simply trying to challenge traditional gender roles. In that regard I applaud him and wish him nothing but joy in his reign. Long live the Queen!
-
Witchyfop is right. It's not about wanting to be a woman or be like a woman, it's about the position within life that we represent. I actually know a few "men" who are more the stereotypical "woman" of the family.
-
I think he went about challenging gender roles in the wrong fashion not to mention some roles are in place for a reason... a man can't exactly breast feed his child
-
Male lactation is a documented experience in many mammals including humans, and may even be common place soon. That is if, as the writer of this article puts it, "Will all you guys be able to get over your hang-up that breast-feeding is a woman’s job?" Next ;D

There's a kick in the buttocks for Kaz.
Even if that wasn't so, I still think that you're missing the point, Kaz. He doesn't want to become a woman, or even necesarily to take over the traditional "roles" of a woman that you probably have in mind.
-
Apparently shaggy has just hit puberty and can't control himself... yes i am being unkind but frankly speaking stupidity deserves no less... you have very obviously missed the point of the argument and i do not wish to waste my time repeating myself even this post is worthless and makes me look as petty as yourself... which in honesty i am being just that

I can't believe I'm saying this, but I'm with Kaz (before he got his ad-hom on). This is kind of stupid. The effeminate gay man is a stereotype I would think the gay community would like to shake off. If you really want to "challenge traditional gender roles and popularity" put the tiara on a straight man. If a man can be simultaneously effeminate enough to accept the title of prom queen and popular enough to win it, while still being straight—then, perhaps, we will have accomplished something.
-
But I doubt many straight men would actually want to do that–and if they did, they'd probably be doing it for kicks.
-
< wishes he was still in high school to fufill all of those requirments... effiminate, popular, straight, tired of gender stereotyopes.. >I also cook, sew, have been in several choirs, watch sappy romances and I am married (to a woman) with 4 beautiful children. But I agree that the effeminate gay man is a stereotype, but only because we attribute those qualities with women. If we just looked at everyone as individuals then you wouldn't be able to call anyone "effeminate" or "masculine".
-
Hmm.... I guess I just don't understand why it would be a big deal at all. It is just a fun popularity contest for high school students, not a political or social movement. I think the only time I actually voted was when we had a special needs couple running and I just thought it was sweet because you could tell it meant so much to them when they won.
The only issue I see with this is just a mater of fairness and simplicity. With the Prom King and Queen it sets itself up for a winner from both sexes as I would see the two terms as pretty interchangeable in modern society. And then, if the Prom King wants to wear a dress or whatever else, more power to him. :-\
Aw, well. It doesn't really matter to me, so congrats on getting your ten seconds of fame, what-ever-your-name-was!
-
I don't think it's about fame. I think it's about making progress against sexual discrimination.
-
So now it is discriminatory to call a boy a boy and a girl a girl? Isn't that just who they are?
At least that is how I see it. But then, I'm old school and have always been happy to be Queen and let the boys be King. :-\
-
That' snot what I'm saying at all. What I'm saying is, in many places, a gay person would not be elected to any position of importance at all because of the discrimination against homosexuals. So it is progress for a gay man to be elected to a position many would consider "gay" by the general populace (even more importantly, the kids).
-
Oh, okay. I can agree with that. I just don't see why he wanted to be Queen rather than King other than for the shock factor.
-
Are you saying that 'shock factor' was definitely one of his reasons for becoming Queen? I actually think the opposite.…
-
I actually think that was the motivation gay or not he is seeking attention which is common among young people... unfortunately they can't always see the difference between negative and positive attention
-
Just wondering…how is that negative attention?
I disagree, Kaz. I think the (main…?) reason he ran for Prom Queen instead of King was that he felt he associated more with the archetype of a "queen" than a "king."
-
Since when has gender become an archetype? The reason they came up with "king" and "queen" was for classifying them as a male or female. This guy, no matter how gay he wants to be, is always going to be a man! not a female! I think it's wrong that a man could decide to be a woman just because he feels that way.
-
ONCE AGAIN, I'm pretty sure Sergio DOES NOT want to become a woman. He even said, "I don't want to be a girl; I just want to be myself."
-
I guess the dude just feels like a Queen. *heh*
-
I guess the dude just feels like a Queen. *heh*
Dude looks like a lady. Yeah, yeah.
i think the point they're making, shag, is that if he wasn't just trying to get attention from the idea of "look at me, i'm a guy who was voted queen!" he would have wanted to be called king, instead, so that there would have been 2 prom kings, since as people have been saying, queen if for females, and males are called kings. They aren't saying he actually WANTS to be a woman, but by taking the female title, is just vying for attention.
-
Hmm…I still disagree.
As a kind of "rebuttal"…why do you say that if he wasn't vying for attention, he would have chosen to run for prom king?
-
I think frankly running for either position is vying for attention.
-
I think frankly running for either position is vying for attention.
well, techincally yes, since it's really nothing more than a popularity contest
-
But I think we were talking about vying for more than the normal amount of attention–as in, outside of the town/city attention.
-
Well he shouldn't be surprised that it has grabbed some more attention then just within that school. Though the only place I've heard of it is here. So it's not National news or anything like that. It's not really that big a deal since as pointed out it's just a popularity contest to be called School Queen or King for a year.
-
I think it's really funny that one of only a few people they quote is named "Unique Payne". C'mon, say it out loud...

...That's an awesome name.
-
There is a person named Unique Payne? Wow there parents must have really hated them.

Personally, I'd use it as some kind of catch phrase. Something like "Time to bring down the unique payne!" :P
-
That's like that girl in Texas named Ima Hogg.
-
Ima did not have a sister named Ura.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ima_Hogg
-
It seems you're right. (It is true, though, that the existence of Ura Hogg is a common belief.…)
-
LIES!!!!!!!!!!!!! show me Britannica or an acceptable source other wise i remain firm in my stubborn belief....
(wikipedia is not a reliable source it called Michael the archangel of water when infact that is Gabriel and Micheal is the archangle of fire)
-
Just google their two names together and you'll see about 1500 (exaggeration ::)) sources all agreeing with Ook.

All mirroring the Wikipedia article! Woohoo!
(However that fact in the article is cited to an outside source...hopefully it's accurate...)
