Brandon Sanderson / Re: Gathering Storm Title
« on: May 05, 2009, 05:39:20 AM »
I liked 9, though some of the stuff with Elayne was a little boring. It was 10 that I wanted to kill. But then I read 11 and everything was ok again. I was lucky and started about 2 years ago, so I haven't had to do nearly as much waiting as some.

11 seemed to get back on track with the first 6 or so books.  The sense of urgency in world was renewed.  Unfortunately, I think that's a result of the real-life urgency of Robert Jordan's illness that forced him to resume the very fast-paced style of the earlier books.

Overall, I think the prob with Book 11 (honestly books 7 - 11) is that I don't feel any sort of worry for the characters. None are gonna die, so I have trouble feeling emotionally connected to them. The sense of wonder has fled.

Or for the Forsaken, for that matter.  In fact, as far as some aspects went, the first six books seemed to be a different series in a way.  Rand's exploits seemed to be building in a logical manner (training, gaining the support of the Aiel, conquest and consolidation, which should have then led to Tarmon Gaidon), but then he  gets... well, sidetracked.  He doesn't just sit around for the next 5 books, but I don't feel that the progress he made, short of the cleansing, was really anything... significant.  The White Tower stuff starts to come to the forefront, which while that isn't bad... nothing really seems to happen there until book 11.  Perrin gets hauled off on a sidequest.  Mat's portions were cool the whole time, I think.  But my point is, we lose the hunt of the seals, Rand's conquest and consolidation kinda falls apart, Perrin sits in a tent moping...

There are still some interesting storylines being carried out, it's just that the main ones feel stalled and tossed aside.  And with Rand, perhaps irredeemably so.

Not to mention, one of the best lines from Rand comes from Book 8, haha, right before his Callandor-genocide.

I haven't here to check up on some of the newer stuff, but Ink, I think all of your work is amazing.

Sazed - awesome.  I have nothing to suggest.  In fact, I'd like to see a color rendition, if you find the time/interest to do so, just to see what your take on the color design on the robes would look like.

Mistwraith - Take 2 is better.  I agree, maybe ditch the hair and cut down some of the skeletal stuffs (you've got a lot going on, which looks cool, I'm just not sure that's what the description was getting at).  Also, and I can't back this up with any text, I kinda got the impression that their skin was transparent-ish and that the bones could be seen in their entirety.  I'm probably just making that up, haha.

Vin - possibly the best Vin I've seen here, and there's some great competition.  I love the oversized sword too, that's about how I imagined it from WoA.

Koloss - Freakin' scary dude.  I love 'em.  Yeah, I think you've got them pegged.

Again, great stuff!

Because he's rapidly being turned into a throwaway character?

Alright, Renoard, it's going to become a Madness vs. Reonard thread if you KEEP bashing Rand! JK ;D

I'll put $5 on the crazy one!
(and I'll sit back and let you fight out which one of you two that is... XD)

Yeah... I think we're having three different discussions here, because nowhere in my post did I say atheists believed in anything (which makes Miyabi's reference to a Christian without believing in Jesus nonsensical).  I was mostly saying what mtlhddoc2 got into; that atheists do not automatically walk around bashing the religion of others for the sake of doing so.  In fact, I know more atheists that believe in the right to choose or not choose one's own religion than I do those that are out to disprove the existence of any higher power/god/spiritual world/etc.

Never once did I say that an atheist could be a Christian/Muslim/Shintoist/etc and still be atheist.  If I had, that would have merited the textbook definition.

I don't either, but it's best to catch it before rather than after it's too late, haha.  I've had MB3 stuff spoiled for me from some careless comments and it was a real letdown (I haven't read it yet still, because I'm a college student and hardcovers are a premium, haha... but the paperback comes out real soon, YAY!), so I'm just trying to make sure that it doesn't happen to the WoT fans here.

And also if you were truly Atheist you would be against all of these religions because Atheism revolves around the though of there CAN'T be any supreme being, so claiming no allegiance for them as some sort of support in your arguments just makes you look bad.

I disagree.  Just like followers of any other belief, atheists can't all be lumped under the same umbrella.  There are personal atheists who just don't have personal religious beliefs and there are militant atheists that wish to destroy religion in all forms.  And there is every shade in between.

Anyways, to answer the original question, I'm going to quote a professor of mine that sounds a whole lot like Sazed.  Every religion has value.  What they believe may not be 'True' (capital T for an absolute Truth), but they are true for that culture and help shape it.  It's a Freudian concept, actually.

Also, I'd like to point out that the Book of Mormon (as I'm told, I haven't read it, yet, because I'm not Mormon) teaches values and morals very similar to the New Testament.  So if you're coming from a Judeo-Christian background, I'd have to argue that you should have nothing against what the Book of Mormon preaches, you just might disagree with the details.

I would also guess Lan.  Perrin has to get Elayne's mom to Galad, reunite with Child Byar et al. and save Rand from women channelers one more time? borderlander BA??? and perhaps be of some help with the Seanchan.

I'd like to remind you guys that this is a thread about what Mr. Sanderson is up to, not a WoT theory thread.  It's not marked as a SPOILER zone and I think your conversation is heading that direction.  I don't personally care because I've read the series, but I know there are some here that haven't, so please respect that and take the conversation elsewhere.

Rants and Stuff / Re: Would you have a second wife?
« on: April 20, 2009, 06:54:53 AM »
No, but not for a religious reason.  I have yet to connect with someone on the level that I think would be necessary for a marriage to work long-term, and then maintaining that relationship, growing and understanding each other together takes a lifetime as well.  In short, if I married twice, I don't think I could maintain the relationship in a way that would be fair to both women.

Just me knowing how I am.  I don't condemn it, I just don't think I could handle it.

That would be an interesting and possibly frustrating job, haha.

I liked how you worked the metal symbols into the lettering.  Very cool.

I think the most epic of swordfights ever would be Rand vs. Lan. Which is easier to breakdown because the both exist in the same world and thus play by the same rules. I've mentioned this before but people have disregarded it because either A.) Lan's awesomeness created a bias in their minds or B.) Rand lost a swordfight to Toram Riatin. Well Lan is awesome so I can't fault anyone there but Toram is a blademaster and Rand only lost because he 1.) was still recovering from his wounds 2.) he was wearing gloves to hide the dragons and 3.) he was distracted by a "disturbance" in the pattern at the same instant Toram delivered the "killing" blow.

So, Rand vs. Lan, is there any other two guys more willing to give absolutely everything?

I won't comment on Ham vs Lan because anything I could possibly want to say has already been said (although personally, I think if they were going to spar, Ham would be honorable and not use Pewter to fight, and Lan would probably win.  If Pewter were involved, than Lan would have a mess on his hands).

Rand vs Lan, however, I still think Lan would win.  Lan taught Rand how to fight.  Lan knows his weaknesses and his fighting patterns.  Lan also has several decades on Rand when it comes to experience.  Of course, this is only if Rand isn't using the One Power.

Wait a second.  With the rumor there is only one additional topic and that can be expected.  I actually expected more. The other two topics where already there.  The AMOL thread has been ongoing for some time with daily posts.  The splitting memory of light is just off topic as they are discussing the reproduction of fades.  Now next week when TOR releases information you may see the explosion of threads.

Unless I missed something and the admin went and killed a bunch of threads I don't see any influx of WoT chatter.  It would be like saying you are getting a bunch of MB chatter whenever 1 new thread is started.

No, it wasn't that a bunch of new threads had been started, it was that a bunch of old ones suddenly got bumps.  WoT really did take over the front page yesterday.

Ack, now I really, really see what you mean.  A faint hint of rumors on WoT and the front page explodes with a new crowd of people vigorously rehashing the same thought over and over about what it might mean.

Although, I guess calling it a 'faint hint of rumors' isn't quite accurate, seeing as Mr. Sanderson felt the need to approach it in his blog.
