Silk, I don't always agree with him, either. His whole 'Sacred Cows of Publishing' series is quite opinionated and practically throws everything out the window. But more often than not, he makes me think, and as a result my writing has improved. I used to think there was something wrong with me because I'm the kind of writer who has to go back and add material in susequent drafts instead of taking stuff out, so it was rather comforting that I'm not abnormal to know that there are professional writers with that same style. There is hope ;)

1 draft doesn't mean anything when it comes to quality.  Since every writer is different, his 1 draft could be as well rounded as a person who made 9 million drafts.  To judge a book without reading it, and based solely on the number of drafts it took to write it is a tad silly.

I agree, Steve. Dean Wesley Smith writes a series a of 'how to' for writers on his blog, and he pretty much shoots down the 'one draft is crap' theory.

Have you read Arthur C. Clarke?

Rendezvous with Rama  is my favorite of his.

Last Argument of Kings (wild and awesome)!!!! Glokta is so crazed but he's a BA!

Yeah, he became my favorite of the series by the end, too.

Reading Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins. A repeat of the first book and I'm halfway through. It had better change the plot here pretty soon or I'm gonna be annoyed.

Bada$$ (don't know if I'm allowed to say the full word here. Haven't quote gotten a handle on the language limits of this fine site.)

Oooh, close but you pass. ;)

I had a baby! Baby Nathan was born on March 30 at 8 lbs 9 oz. I have not posted much and that trend will continue, but I have to brag.

He is super cute! Congrats!

This is awesome. What a way to take charge of your money! It will be lean for a while, but you'll gain a lot of satisfaction when everything is paid off.

Eerongal's snowballing plan is good. Perhaps see which bill has the most interest associated with it and pay that one off first (usually credit cards are the highest). Waiting to pay off student loans until you have to works, but make sure first that they're at the lowest possible interest rate in the meantime. When my husband finished medical school we rolled all the loans together into a super low 3%.

Writing Group / looking for a couple of alpha readers
« on: April 12, 2010, 03:44:36 AM »
I need a couple of alpha readers interested in reading a novel I just finished writing (about 70K words currently). It's been through my writing group, so the second draft is finished. I need comments, mostly, to make sure it doesn't suck, and to help me further refine the story. It's (light) sci fi/romance so my audience is primarily female. But I would really super appreciate a guy's perspective on the male lead character if any of y'all are interested.
