Great band. Excellant songs

Perhaps you should have an actual topic for discussion when you start a new thread. A thread is very boring when it says "Great band" and then everyone posts "i agree" and "me too" underneath.
-
Green Day sucks (how's that Fuzzy?).
-
Much better, Sprig. I greatly appreciate it. I'd have said it myself, but you know me. I'm afraid that Billie Joe Whatshisface might come seek revenge.

I agree.
-
I agree.
Me too.
-
Feel free to post whatever you like about green day and then specify a reason why. Anyone know any strange facts about em then post em.
-
Well I know me and my brother stopped listening to System of A Down because of way too much anti american crap they were saying. Then with Green Day's new album they said that they went anti american so I don't really listen to them anymore since they decided not to.
-
I personally have never liked Green Day, I just don't care for Punk I'm a pure Rock guy. I will admit that American Idiot is their best album but I don't care for for how negative it is, I like my entertainment to entertain me not make me depressed.
-
American Idiot is definitely their best, I've never much liked them before. I don't share a lot of their anti-American views, but I appreciate the fact that we're finally getting some good protest songs out of this generation; we haven't any quality on that front since Vietnam, and it was starting to worry me that our media had become so detached from life that it could no longer summon appropriate outrage over political issues.
-
As it has been said before, Green Day is great, they play the three chords they know really well.
-
It's my impression that they are not anti-American, but anti-the-current-administration. Perhaps someone could point out something that I've been missing?
-
Well Green Day is strongly opposed to the current administration. But they were also rather opposed to the previous administration. At least that is what I gathered from the one hour special I saw on VH1 at 3 am.
Generally speaking, Green Day belongs to a counter-culture movement. Something they freely acknowledge.
Wether or not that makes them anti-American is a matter of some debate. From what I gather Green Day is stongly supportive of individuality. The idea of individuality is a very American ideal. In fact, American care more about individuality than any other society on Earth.
This is somewhat problematic as societies are built on conformity. In fact, the survival of all people on the Earth is dependent on conformity. All people have strong psychological and biological needs to conform and belong to a group. Just about everything we use on a daily basis is thanks to conformity. Little things like language and all forms of communication.
The conflict arises that Green Day is supportive of ideals that are in a very real sense threatening to many groups in Americans. Thus they can be percieved as anti-American. In Green Day's mind they could be seeing themselves as being very American simple because they belong to a very different group.
This is the kind of stuff that Socio-Cultural Anthropologists, Sociologists, and Social-Psychologists live for. (Don't ask me to explaing the difference between them.) Overall, the modern Western world is experiencing a large amount of fracturization as societies, groups, and cultures get blended about.
Historically, the end result is lots of war and bloodshed.
-
Not that I disagree with you 42, but isn't that just a wonderful thought? I think that there are many other reasons for that, but that is another thread entirely.
-
I wouldn't call Green Day anti-American either, System of a Down is though, I just find them very pessimistic.
-
As Thoreau said, the greatest patriots a country has are its rebels.
I can't believe I just quoted Thoreau in a noob spam thread.
-
ThoreauI find Thoreau's thought and matter to be sophomoric, myself. He was a whiz with style, but he had some pretty dumb ideas. So, I can't think of a better place to quote him.
-
In other news, I just bought The Flaming Lips Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots. Nothing anti-American, just songs about robots having emotions and stopping said robots from eating people. Good stuff.
-
That actually sounds like a cool album Onion.
-
Green day are the best band on the planet I don't care what they sing about. It's the way they sing it. Anyone who doesn't like the greatest band on earth is purely insane no effence sprigg or whoever else doesnt like the sons of rage and love.
Dankeschon,
Dankezman
By the way hamburglar as Archon calls him is aiming to find a way to beat the ISPN
-
Ahh but I love effence, it's one of the best tasting beverages out there. :'(
-
The ISPN is the number you use to look up sport's channel Internet IDs in the Library of Congress. Plus, you can look them up with your mind.
-

For example?
Not to get off topic, but I love Thoreau.

There are so many jokes in that sentence quote that I think my brain just exploded.
-
Amusingly, this thread has generated a link to a Thoreau T-shirt. Here it is, for those who don't see the ad itself: http://www.historyshirt.com/shirt/cgi/t-shirt.cgi?hdt
-
I want a James Thurber tshirt. If I mention Thurber will it give me a link to one?
-
If I mention pie will someone bring me some?
-
Pie!
...it's not working.
-
hey someone brought me this pie! ::)

-
For example?
Not to get off topic, but I love Thoreau.
How about starting with his vastly over-rated Walden? The point of hte book is that anyone can buck off society and go live on their own sweat and labor.
Nevermind that I'm living on the property of my very rich friend and spend about as much time there as I do at home.
It just doesn't follow if you do more than look at the touchy feely sentiment of the words.
But like I said, his writing style is brilliant. His use of words and sounds in combination is worth reading, even if his ideas are foolish. And, well, he does give a great defense of the approach to literature comparatists use, so I have to give him props for that.
-
But what does he say about pie?
-
And so your evidence that his ideas are sophomoric is...?
I'm fine if you say that it's not a philosophy you ascribe to, but to say he's poorly informed and immature (sophomoric) is something else entirely.
-
did you *read* my post?
The point of his book is that anyone can do something and he's going to demonstrate it. And then he goes to demonstrate nothing like his point. Isn't that sophomoric?
-
I have to admit, Mustard, that he did give some pretty recognizable evidence about why he thinks he's sophomoric.
-
First, your explanation of his premise seems wrong -- he wasn't arguing that people should flee society. His premise was that people were too caught up in society. He used his time in the woods to illustrate getting out of society -- not offer an example of what everyone needed to do.
It's not a manual that teaches you how to live the life of a hermit -- it's philosophy. It's not a wilderness survival textbook. The incidental facts about how much time he spent in the woods are irrelevant -- the important part is whether or not he found alternative ways to view civilization. Honestly, I don't know how someone can get caught up on whether or not he actually spent every day in woods or whether his mom did his laundry.
-
He was just lazy. Pursuing a philosophy out of a desire to be able to do nothing except write.
Wait. Is that a bad thing?
-
no. He specifically posits in Walden that one can, and should, live less connected to society. He goes into the woods to demonstrate that everyone has the ability to do it.
The problem with that position is that in order for him to make this new life less connected to society he borrows land from his wealthy friend to do it, then doesn't have to survive very long in the wilderness by himself because of his constant visits to said friend (visits he mentions in his own work). He cuts very few ties and he gets by based on his connections. How is that living deliberately without the baggage of modern society?
So yeah, if I knew a guy who had a nice house on some lakefront property I could go out there and write some poetic words about how the animals act too. But I'm not going to claim that everyone can cut some of their dependence on modern society that way.
I never said that it was supposed to be some sort of survival guide. I'm saying that the actual practice of his philosophical experiment doesn't jive well at all with the philosophical point he was making.
-
Thanks... now we have two ads for Walden University you two. And no one has brought us pie.
Or cake!
They could bring us cake!
-
Speak for yourself. I got pie for lunch on my boss.
Anyway, I don't intend to talk about Thoreau anymore. I made a throwaway comment about my opinion of him. I don't intend to try and convert anyone to my point of view. I just want it on record that I'm not just vilifying him because I dislike his philosophy. My opinion of him is based on how he formed his philosophy and communicated it.
-
While you make good points, I still can't see throwing away his good philosphical ideas merely because his experiment was flawed. But then again, I never thought that the experiment was there to prove anything -- merely to give it the ideas a concrete illustration (no different, in my mind, from any supernatural myths from religion or philosophy -- they're necessarily not true or literal, but they help you understand the ideas.) (Not that I'm putting Walden in an equal status with religion.)
However, realizing that this is not an argument that either of us can win, since we can't agree on very premise, I'll bow out before it gets heated.
-
Speaking of things getting heated--I want my pie!
-
warm apple pie is good.
so is shoofly pie.
-
Homemade apple pie rules the roost, followed closely by homemade pumpkin pie, then homemade pistacio pie.
-
when come back, bring pie.
Dangit, I'm making a store run today now.
-
Homemade apple pie rules the roost, followed closely by homemade pumpkin pie, then homemade pistacio pie.
When you say "homemade" do you mean from a pumpkin or from a can of pumpkin, cause really I consider homemade even if the filling is from a can. I had "real" homemade pumpkin pie once. Some guys I knew, while I was single, actually took a pumpkin, spooned out the insides (minus seeds), cooked it, added the spices, I made the crust, and we put it together in the oven. It tasted the same as the canned stuff, but had a different texture. I felt like it wasn't worth the trouble (unless you're trying to use up a pumpkin so it doesn't go to waste).
My favorite thing to do when making pies is to buy the refrigerated pie crusts (that are rolled up). They're just as good as homemade. You can get two for about 2 bucks and it's so much easier than making it yourself. I know, crust isn't that hard, but I make a mess every time and it's a pain to clean up.
-
And at last we get a link for homemade pumpkin pie! Tink wins.
-
The trick with making pumpkin pie from a pumpkin is to strain it after it's cooked. That evens out the texture and makes it wonderful. My step-grandmother used a funky sieve and a wooden dowel meant to push it through. I wish I had the time to do stuff like bake goodies from scratch. :P
-
I don't see half the stuff you guys mention. Though I did see a crisco ad on this thread. 90% of the time I get an ad for Free Message Boards (AOL Official Site --- oh yeah, *that's* a tempting ad)
-
I get Gluten-Free Cheesecakes.
-
Now that's what we need: some links to cheesecake.
-

-
my question is if Green Day is so great, why does "Wake Me When September Ends" drive me homocidal? It's like "wow, 'Good Riddance' did so well (after our manager told us to do an acoustic song so we could be popular), let's do another just like it. We won't even have to make up any lyrics that make sense, or very many lyrics at all! Just make it sound vaguely sentimental and have an acoustic guitar in it!"
-
Yeah, I'm not too fond of that song either. When I first heard it I thought it was okay, but now the radio stations have overplayed it to death (as they are wont to do).
edited to add: And I'm still getting pumpkin pie recipie ads for this thread. Crap! I just made it worse.
-
I get those too, but also Cheesecakes.
Cheesecakes roxxor.
-
You keep saying cheesecake, but it's never what I want it to be.
-
GREEN DAY RULE'S
-
Green Day rule is? Or are you trying to tell us that Green Day belongs to rule?
-
Oh man, how could I have missed that? It's so simple. The cheesecake belongs to Green Day's Rule, like their dynasty.
-
Isn't it a little early for there to be a Green Day cover band? I mean, the Beatles, yeah, but Green Day?
-
You could call it Aquamarine Day!
Aquamarine Day Rule Is!!!!!!
-
"What's your band called."
"Pearl Jam"
"You can't do that, there's already a band called Pearl Jam."
"Oh, I mean, Pearl Jam 2"
"Bands don't have sequels!"
-
Pearl Jam II
I like it.
-
Obviously, Green Day Rule! People which think different are strange in my opinion. However a Green Day cheeseburgers' probably horrible
Your friendly neighbourhood Annoyance
-
Shhh.... it's your turn to play the quiet game.
-
Okay....
So he likes it that everyone here is annoyed be his very presence?
-
I believe so. Here's my thoughts on Dankezman.
1) He hasn't really earned a ban.
2) responding to his remarks encourages him at this point. He's one of those social retards who gets his kicks out of making people angry.
3) Most of the smackdown that results, while not really smacking him down (see #2) is pretty funny, so I'm willing to put up with him.
4) There is no number 4
5) You can continue to smack him around, but he likes it, so you would be amusing him at the same time you try to put him down.
-
Woah, epiphany. Being a masochist makes so much more sense for his behavior than simply being stupid or socially incompetent. Thanks, E.
-
Well if E can put up with him. So can I.
-
Well if E can put up with him. So can I.
I smell!
That's because you are him!
