Title: December Word War
Post by: firstRainbowRose on December 02, 2008, 06:28:39 AM
Okay, so I figured it would be better to start a new thread rather then taking over the Nanowrimo one.

(Sorry in advance if this is the wrong place)

In case anyone is wondering a word war is basically where you challenge someone to see who can write more.  Right now I know of two people who said their intrested.  If you want to do it, come join us, but it's only going to count for words you wrote this month.

What we're going to do is I will post each of the current totals in this post.  If you want to join, just say so, and then post your total for the day.

Current Totals:

firstRainbowRose: 2,525
Raethe: 0
little_wilson: 302

Sign me up.

Now, when we say word war, are we talking about words for one project, or all of our projects?  'Cause I've got a lot more than one project that needs to be worked on this month.

I think we should keep it to just one.  (In my case, working on my book)
Title: Re: December Word War
Post by: Silk on December 02, 2008, 06:47:14 AM
So if I finish my book and go onto my next one I can't count those? :(

lol. That's probably fair though.

Post by: firstRainbowRose on December 02, 2008, 06:49:05 AM
No, I think that would be just fine.  You finish this one then decide on ONE project that your words would be applied towards the count.

I agree. If you finish with the book, just move onto the next one. But just make sure that you really are done before you move on....And then stick with that one.

And as I said in the nanowrimo thread, I'm up for this. I need to progress further in my book, and I thought nanowrimo would do that. I was wrong....Hopefully this word war will. It should help that I'll be done with the semester for a good half of the month, too....If I can whip out some Raethe days (I think that's my new name for 25k days, or even just any huge wordcount day) I should get pretty far...

Haha, awesome. Some Raethe days. I feel warm and fuzzy now.

I forget who challenged me to do it twice in a row, but I'm actually... rather curious to see if I can...

I like that name.  :D

And I think it would be totally awesome if you could do that again.

Well, we'll just have to see, won't we? ;)

The gauntlet is thrown!  My total for yesterday and today: 2,525 (I think it's a rather cool number.)
Title: Re: December Word War
Post by: Silk on December 03, 2008, 07:09:03 AM
Good job! That's 2525 more than I've got so far.

Still thinking I might actually try to make Friday a 30k day. I don't think I have to go anywhere else...

It's too bad we couldn't get status bars for this sort of thing...
Title: Re: December Word War
Post by: firstRainbowRose on December 03, 2008, 07:11:11 AM
I'm sure I could make a fancy little icon.  The problem is of course getting them to update themselves and junk.  Plus the satus bar works better for a set end goal.  We're doing more of just a "see how much you can do in this amount of time".  I think a bar graph might work better, which I'm sure I could find a website that allows us to make one.

Haha. You're right of course. That was what I meant.

Some writer I am. ::)

No worries.

I actually am looking for something right now we could edit.  I think that's an awesome idea.

Post by: Silk on December 03, 2008, 07:21:49 AM
Haha. Yeah, that's one thing I noticed during NaNo, the visual representation of the status bar and the graph really helped. Don't know why. Weird mental thing, I guess.

Plus now whenever I want to inflate my head I can go look at how much the bar graph went up in the last two days. ::)

What is your user for the website?  I want to add you as a writing buddy.

I think I've found a site that will work.  The only thing is that I'll have to make the graph each time.

Post by: Silk on December 03, 2008, 07:32:08 AM
It's at http://www.nanowrimo.org/eng/user/447071

And augh, that's a pain. Times like this I wish I knew more of computer programming than "if ... else".  Some of my friends could probably whip up one  of those things that updated itself, easy.
Title: Re: December Word War
Post by: firstRainbowRose on December 03, 2008, 07:33:58 AM
That would be tons easier.  I used to know Java well enough to do it, but I fell out of pratice.  Are you willing to see if any of them can come up with something?
Title: Re: December Word War
Post by: Silk on December 03, 2008, 07:40:29 AM
Heh. I don't actually expect to talk to either of my programmer friends until January when school starts up again, so...  (One lives in another city, and one I just ... never see...)
Title: Re: December Word War
Post by: firstRainbowRose on December 03, 2008, 07:42:11 AM
Hm.  Well, I have a few programmer friends myself, so I'll bug them.

My dad might be able to put something together...Or help me put something together. It'll be two weeks at least, though....I won't be going home next until the end of the semester...

Oh, and I noticed the nano word buddies. If you want to add me, mine is http://www.nanowrimo.org/eng/user/407012

Sweet.  Well, I'll ask my friends, and if they can't get anything we'll go with that.

I'll add you.  If either of you wants to add me, I'm at http://www.nanowrimo.org/eng/user/434598
Title: Re: December Word War
Post by: Silk on December 03, 2008, 08:02:18 AM
It's too bad we couldn't just make a post we could all edit. I mean, graphs are nice but I think even seeing all our word counts in one place would be pretty effective.

I mean, Rose, you could just edit your original post, except it'd be a pain in the butt to have to do that for all three of us...
Title: Re: December Word War
Post by: firstRainbowRose on December 03, 2008, 08:03:22 AM
I wouldn't mind actaully.  That seems simple enough to me.  That way if it takes a while to get the graph we could still see the numbers.
Title: Re: December Word War
Post by: Silk on December 03, 2008, 08:10:36 AM
Haha, okay. Yeah, it's definitely the simplest approach. Just would be more efficient, and probably a bit more accurate, if we could each do our own. XD
Title: Re: December Word War
Post by: firstRainbowRose on December 03, 2008, 08:14:25 AM
So just post it, and I'll change the main page when you do.  That way we can look back and see who did how much each day, as well as see the over all totals.
Title: Re: December Word War
Post by: Silk on December 03, 2008, 08:16:40 AM
Sounds good. You might want to write that into the first post too. That way anyone who wants to join us doesn't have to fish through the thread to see how it works.

Good idea.
Title: Re: December Word War
Post by: little wilson on December 03, 2008, 08:36:52 AM
I know this is a tiny amount, but it gives me something. 131 words. I would write more, but I'm tired, and I need to get some sleep....
Title: Re: December Word War
Post by: firstRainbowRose on December 03, 2008, 08:39:18 AM
It's completaly fine.  I think everyone is out of it after nanowrimo.  I won on the 22 (I think?) and I was supposed to continue writing 2k every day after that.  However, I've written the 2,525 that you see. (Give or take a few words in notes and junk from before)
Title: Re: December Word War

Hey, by  day 3 of NaNo I had 387 words. Just to put things in perspective. ;)

*waves* If there's still a space open on Dec 4th, I'll join.....

Might give me a kick up the rear to have something done by the 15th ^^

You're totally welcome to join in.  I don't think there's going to be a "not welcome" ever.

Okay, the "try and hit 30k in 24 hours" thing has been moved to Tuesday. I think that's my next day off.

Sigh...

It's bad enough having Nano one month of the year, and now you want to continue it into December, too!
Title: Re: December Word War

Speaking of which....I got another 170 words written....At this rate, I should be at 1000 by the end of the month...Lame.

And it's to finish the novels that we weren't able to finish for NaNo....Not that I really tried to last month, but....yeah.
Title: Re: December Word War
Post by: Silk on December 06, 2008, 10:47:43 PM
Exactly! My novel's probably going to be another 50k before it's done, so why WOULDN'T we have a word war to keep ourselves going?

That said, I should go actually... yanno... write. I haven't written anything since Sunday.

You write just about at my pace, wilson. I don't know if I should be happy of that fact or just be disappointed about my progress.

I haven't looked at my latest count (too busy being distracted by Detty fanfics... *blushes*  And does anyone know why those stupid combined names even came to be?)  But I'm pretty sure I've got another 2k.  Although, for a week I should have 10k, which kind of sucks.

You guys think you're sad, just look at my word count for the month so far. Isn't it a whopping total?

::)

I thought you were supposed to do 30k words today....
Title: Re: December Word War
Post by: Silk on December 10, 2008, 06:13:30 AM
I was, but I have to finish this assignment due tomorrow, and I don't think I'll be able to write 30k in 24 hours without taking another crack at those plotholes I have to fill... stupid plotholes.

Thinking I might finish the scene I left off on during NaNo tomorrow/Thursday, and take another crack at the marathon writing on Friday. Provided my employers don't go changing my schedule, that'll be my next day off...

Good luck.  I'd join you, but I never have a day to just sit and type.  Most of my day is spent working, or taking care of my family.
Title: Re: December Word War
Post by: little wilson on December 10, 2008, 06:16:09 AM
What's up with those plot holes slowing writers down? Seriously, the nerve of those things.... ;)

I need to write more....I think I've written like 2 words since the last post I made.....and I deleted about 20, so I'm being more unproductive than anything else right now. That's not good.
Title: Re: December Word War
Post by: firstRainbowRose on December 10, 2008, 06:18:59 AM
I know I have tons of plot holes, but I'm ignoring them.  I'm also not allowed to delete anything unless it's that I've written myself into a corner.  Because of that I've gotten a couple of nice plot twists that I'm sure I wouldn't have gotten before (such as my mc nearly getting beaten to death, and now her getting a title)
Title: Re: December Word War
Post by: Silk on December 10, 2008, 06:22:09 AM
I know, right? It's inconsiderate of them.

Heh, having a day to myself like that is actually fairly rare for me... but as long as my job leaves me alone, I'll have more of them now that school's out and most of my other activities will probably drop off as people get lazy over the holidays.

I spent most of NaNo ignoring plot holes, but I don't think I can anymore. I've sort of hit a point where an external problem needs to start informing the characters' actions more than it has been... And that's where all the plot holes are...

Hey, at least you guys are still writing now and then.  I haven't added a word to my NaNo since November 29th when I broke 50K.  I'll finish it eventually...at least that's what I keep telling myself.
Title: Re: December Word War
Post by: Silk on December 10, 2008, 06:14:31 PM
Haha. Oh, don't mistake me. I haven't either.

...Yet...

Just you all wait until Friday. *shakes fist*

Ahem. Seriously. Yeah, I've opened the document and looked at it a few times, but haven't actually rewritten anything yet.
Title: Re: December Word War
Post by: firstRainbowRose on December 11, 2008, 06:34:04 AM
The main thing that keeps me going and actually makes me want to write is the fact that I have to get this done by the end of may if I want my book.  So I'm hoping to get it done by then.
Title: Re: December Word War
Post by: little wilson on December 24, 2008, 07:57:21 AM
I've written another 1368 words.......Makes me happy. I'm finally getting back into writing my book. It's awesome. Right now I'm just rewriting what I've already got, but once I finish that and move onto actually writing, rather that re-writing, I'll really start racking in the word count.....Hopefully.
Title: Re: December Word War
Post by: Reaves on December 24, 2008, 03:01:24 PM
Unfortunately the computer I type on doesn't even have Microsoft Word...right now I am using something called Rich Text. And so, it doesn't have a wordcount. Unless I copy my documents over to my flashdrive and put it on my desktop computer, I have no idea how much I have written. So I just go by number of kilobytes...I've added about 10 kilobytes in the last day or so.
Title: Re: December Word War
Post by: little wilson on December 30, 2008, 05:18:40 AM
And I've got another 3243 words written. I feel mentally exhausted now. It kind of sucks....
Title: Re: December Word War
Post by: Silk on December 31, 2008, 01:39:46 PM
Alright, so that was pretty lame. 2457 words written. I might be able to get a bit more work done on and off tomorrow, but I don't know if I'll have a chance to get online and update my word count before then if I do... I might come back sometime Jan first and let you know. Don't worry, I'll be honest. ::)
