Can you put the dates and locations for each on your post? And WorldCon is the fanservice one, right?
-
I am Definitely going to World Fantasy Con and would love to share a room/ride with someone.
-
Yes, WorldCon has many more fans than World Fantasy. It still has a ton of professionals, it's just that while you're talking to them you run a high chance of seeing a jedi ocelot walk by in the background.
-
Dan, I'm a go for Worldcon. Hoping also to do a quick primer with you on how to get the most from the con experience. This will be my first major, although I attended Charlotte's Heroes Convention (comics) a couple of years ago. - Will
-
Anyone planning/thinking about Dragoncon in ATL over Labor Day?
-
I know Brandon's going to DragonCon. I won't be this year, but I'd like to start next year.
And Will, I'd be happy to offer some "con maxizimation" advice. Let me think of the best way to do it.
-
Brandon may NOT be going to DragonCon after all.
-
Whoa, crazy. Are you allowed to say why?
-
I haven't asked about what I can say, but I think it's important for people not to take it as a given right now that he's going to Dragon*Con. If he does, in fact, not go, that does make Worldcon more likely (but also not guaranteed). It's complicated...
-
Well, Brandon and Emily are now back on for Worldcon, but Joel is staying home. Dragon*Con is definitely out.
I may possibly be able to room with EJS Thursday through Saturday night, but I still need to find a room for Wednesday night and Sunday night. (I know, I'm getting there a bit early.) Brandon has an extra room I may be able to fall back on but unless something gets planned for that room I assume the reservation will get canceled relatively soon.
-
i'd love to do World Fantasy, but dont know that I can. It's only a few hours from my parents place, and i'd love to turn it into a vacation. i dunno. would it be worth it for me Dan?
-
Ookla: EJS does not, typically, share rooms at cons, but you never know.
UtBaIBG: The selfish part of me says "yes, you should come to World Fantasy" without even pausing to consider if it would be useful for you or not. So, you know, there's that. The more sedate aspects of my personality take time to pause and reflect and decide that, yes, it probably would be useful for you; it is at World Fantasy, after all, that Brandon and I met our editor. World Fantasy is kind of like Superconcentrated WorldCon, with all the pros and about 5% of the fans, and not a costume in sight. It's far easier to find and talk to editors, and the whole vibe is simultaneously more relaxed and more professional. Finally, if you don't believe me, here's what David Hartwell said at the Stoker conference when someone asked him about selling your first book: "Go to cons and meet editors. World Fantasy is a great one because, despite the name, it has editors from all genres, from all the major houses and a lot of the small ones." Plus, you know, there's roleplaying in the car.
-
Are any girls going to World Fantasy?
-
so, there is a strong chance i'll be going to World Fantasy. I wouldnt be driving with you cool people like we did for Worldcon, cause I would be going to Sacramento to see my family after the Con. However, splitting a hotel with the usual suspects in San Jose would be a good thing.
-
Sigyn, local author Julie Wright has talked about going to World Fantasy, so that's a possibility. I haven't talked to her recently, but I'll see if I can get a confirmation.
-
may as well move me to the "Definitely" list for World Fantasy.
Edit: Yep, I'm going for sure. Dan, check your email.
-
Steve the Bookstore Guy is no longer going for sure; in fact, I believe he is for sure not going. If any of you happen to be good pals (or evil nemeses) of Steve's boss, try to convince him to let Steve have some time off for vacation.
-
i r pissed
-
I bet you are! :(
That sucks, I just wound up in a somewhat similar situation, so I know how you feel...
By the way, for those of you going to WorldCon, you might want to read this post (http://arcaedia.livejournal.com/206328.html) on the writing workshop there...
-
I'm a maybe for World Fantasy.
-
i live in San Jose and will be at World Fantasy. If anyone needs anything while they're down here or anything setup before hand (*cough* within reason please *cough*) let me know. :)
-
In the never-ending saga of going to World Fantasy, I may be able to go after all.
-
Steve: I don't believe you. Stop playing with my heart!
Stridera: I need a mixture of hibiscus nectar and orphans' tears, served in one of those plastic honey bottles shaped like a bear.
-
Fellfrosch: Wouldn't it be easier to find crying orphans up near your area, with the serial killer around and all?
-
Hey, I'm leaning heavily toward going to World Fantasy.
Josh Perkey
-
I think I'll be going, but I still don't know where I'll be living when October comes. So I'll be looking to share a hotel room (if I don't end up staying with a friend who lives near SF) but don't know yet whether I'll be driving down.
-
Im officially in for WF...again. Only this time for sure. Seriously.
-
I call dibs on sharing a bed with you BG. Rob was too busy moping last time to spoon me, and this time I think he will be too busy day-dreaming.
-
Wait, what kind of convention is this again? :P
-
Sorry, I always have dibs on Bookstore Guy. Though if we have five in our room this time, we may need to cycle people on the floor.
-
I was going to make some smart-aleck remark about "sounds like my kind of fun", but then Fell ruined it with that remark about sleeping on the floor. ::)
More seriously, I would love to go, and I'm still considering it. Realistically, though, I don't think I'll be able to swing it.
There a space on that list for maybe-probably-not? :P
-
we have 5? holy crud. now I really wish I was driving with you all. especially since I know the game-setting of choice for the ride...
I'll tell my parents to expect an extra body at their place (please note I never said anything about the body being alive).
As for who gets to cuddle with me, don't worry, I'll spread my love around...I'm easy...err...
-
Even though I live down here, can I join in on the party? :P I mean, it's not like anyone will actually be sleeping... right?
-
Doesn't sound like it! Man, I really have to get in on some of this action. :P
-
inorite? I'm in high demand!
It is actually gonna be a pretty busy Con for both Nick and I. We are going to be pimping out our review blog, and we each have novels to pitch. Plus, you know, the cuddling. Don't worry, my wife have approved it with Dan and Nick (but only them).
-
Rob's gonna be pissed!
-
If you're talking about the Rob I think you are, he and Dan should learn to share.
-
I'm actually very interested to see how people there react to the review blog. This could be the push we need to get more publishers to give us all their advanced copies.
-
Hahah. I get it. So the whole site is a part of your evil plan to Collect All The ARCs. :P
-
As long as I can get in on the evil schemes, I'll help push the plot forward!
-

Why do you think this TWG forum was created? Free stuff = awesome.
-
Hey, why isn't Dan employing you as a TWG reviewer? Splinter faction leader! Kill him! No, torture him.
Poke him with the soft cushion! Confess! Confess! Confess!

It's so we each have ability to deny everything under duress.

It's good to have multiple...cells. In case something goes....wrong.
-
I have multiple cells.
-
Show-off. Some of us are lucky just to have cilia.
-
Some of us are lucky to remember what that means.
What? Biology 117 was a long time ago!
-
I have updated the "who's going" list to include car and room estimates. Right now we're looking at two good cars of four people each (plus an extra guy we'll pick up in Sacramento), but because of the gender ratios we have three rooms. Adding more people to help make the rooms cheaper would require adding a car, which would raise the gas price and probably not be worth it. On the other hand, if someone has a minivan we could carry more people without paying for a ton of extra gas, so it would be cheaper overall.
-
I'm definitely going to be going but I'm already down here... are there any plans to meet up for dinner or something the night before? I would definitely like to meet everyone.
-
That's a good idea. It's too bad World Fantasy doesn't use a voodoo board like WorldCon does.
-
If we want, I can find a reserve a place at some restaurant. There are some good places in Japantown (San Jose) that would be able to handle a large group. Alternatively, we could get KFC or something and go to a park and have a big picnic.
-
Gorsh! I wish I could go. This sounds like it will be a fun trip.
-
Anything relatively cheap and walking distance from the con hotel. Thursday night, ideally.
-
Gorsh! I wish I could go. This sounds like it will be a fun trip.
Everybody's going out and having fun,
I'm just a fool for stayin' home and having none...
-
Not too late! :)
-
The World Fantasy price goes up by $25 after tonight. http://www.worldfantasy2009.org/?page_id=4
I'm not going this year, by the way.
-
Heidi and I are going. I'll be staying at a friend's grandmother's house, and Heidi will be rooming with Julie Wright.
We have room for two more in my car.
-
I am thinking about going. If I did go, I'd love to get a ride with you, Eric.
I could potentially stay with my parents (they live in Santa Clara) but might also consider staying with the girls if there was room.
I'll have to think about it some more, though.
-
Say, Dan, Eric, are you guys on any of the panels?
-
Stacy is going and needs to room with someone, I believe.
-
Ok, folks. I've got time constraints with work, so I actually booked a plane ticket (Southwest had a pretty good deal) and will meet you guys down there. Wish I coulda traveled via car--would have been a blast with you crazy folks. I arrive in San Jose at 2:30, so I'll hook up with you at the convention.
Also, they were running low on rooms at the hotel, and I wasn't sure where how things were developing here, so I booked one of the last rooms I could get--a single queen bed with a pull-out couch. I've got it from Thursday night to Sunday morning. Since I used Expedia, I've already paid for it. I'm certainly willing to share the room, though. It was expensive, but cheaper than the World Fantasy rates!--Josh
-
I've updated the first post to include all the latest info on cars and rooms, to the best of my knowledge. Thank you to everyone for keeping us updated.
And hooray that Eric and Heidi are coming, and Janci is probably coming. That's awesome.
As for panels, I filled out the survey but they haven't gotten back to me.
-
Isaac bought a membership, so he is coming for sure.
-
Janci and Isaac have taken the two extra spots in my car, so my car is full.
-
I've adjusted the list accordingly.
Does this mean Janci's in for sure?
-
I'm already sharing a room with Eric's girlfriend, Heidi, but the more the merrier if Stacy would like to room with us. We'd love to have her.
And Eric? Did Heidi make reservations or do you want me to do that? I was going to do it today, but didn't want to double book us if it's already been done. And yep, I need a ride. Any cars left to ride share?
-
I've heard a rumor that Marion Jensen (Matt Buckley) is potentially coming, so everyone bug him until he caves in.
-
Well, nobody is bugging me. I'm not sure what to think of that. :)
I've just registered, so I'm more than likely going to go. I can drive, if needed. I've also got a van I may be able to swing into bringing. It's a late model Honda that seats 6 comfortable, or 8 uncomfortably.
I've also got a closet of board/card games. Make a request; if I have it, I'll bring it.
-
Ooh, definitely bring Race for the Galaxy and Agricola; those are two I've wanted to try. I'll bring some good ones like Space Alert and Small World, and of course Battlestar Galactica.
-
Ooh, I've heard good things about Space Alert.
I bought Battlestar Galatica, and we played it with my gaming group. We only got 2 cards where Cylon ships entered the board. They were all clumped at the bottom of the deck (we fired the shuffler). I'd like to try it again with some actual bad guys on the board.
Will definitely bring Race for the Galaxy, as well as Agricola. RFtG is probably my number 2 game right now (after Dominion).
-
I liked Dominion. Very fun. BSG is great when everything goes nuts. Dan and I have had some great games like that.
-
Hey, just saw this thread, new to the forums and all. I think I know some of you from LTUE and Brandon's 318 class at BYU, not sure who's who though.
Anyway, my name's Joe Vasicek, and I'm driving up to San Jose for the convention with a few other friends who are going. As of now, I've got at least three other people driving up with me, with two other people who may or may not come.
My car seats 6 people comfortably, 7 people legally, and I'll be staying with friends (I served my mission in San Jose and know a lot of people there). I think one of the girls riding up with me already booked a room, not sure though--I can find out and ask her if she did and if she's open to sharing with other people. As for the other passengers, I think they'll be staying with friends too, though I'm not sure.
Of course, if you're short on cash, you could always go for what the locals call the "motel 22"...yeah right, bad idea, it's basically an all-night bus ticket on the 22 line that runs continuously throughout the city. :P Ah, I love San Jose!
-
Joe, let me know more exactly how many people are riding with you, how many seats are available, and how many people need/have a hotel room, and I'll add it to the list at the start of the thread.
-
If worst comes to worst I have a couch/front room floor if anyone needs a cheap option.
(I take no responsibility for anyone who accepts this offer and has their face eaten by one of my curious cats.)
-
Alright, after confirming things with my friends, here's where I stand:
I have a minivan with seven seat belts. It can fit six people comfortably, but a seventh can squeeze in.
Currently, I have three passengers: two guys and one girl, all aspiring writers (like me). The guys have arrangements to stay with friends, the girl hasn't booked a room yet. I'll be staying with some old mission friends, so I don't need a place to stay.
I've got three open seats, if anyone needs a ride. We'll leave from Provo, UT early Thursday morning (early enough to miss the California traffic, hopefully--like around 5am) and come back Monday night.
-
I keep meaning to come over here and post, and I just realized today that it's been a MONTH that I've been meaning to do so. So thanks to everyone looking out for me letting Julie know I needed a room and everything.
I do still need a ride. I'm hoping to replace my tires and brakes by mid-October, so there was the possibility I could drive if necessary, but I'd rather not if there are spaces. Marion, if you're driving, I'd be glad to catch a ride with you, or whoever else has a spot.
Janci, I believe the girls' room is just me, Heidi, and Julie so far, so if you ended up wanting to stay with us instead of with friends you'd be welcome to.
-
Quick question: What's the difference between buying a supporting membership at World Fantasy and buying an Attending Membership? I'm not going this year, but I hope to attend in the future, and it would be good to know for future reference.
Thanks.
-
Supporting means you get the convention publications, and you have the right to nominate works for the World Fantasy Award. You would not be allowed to attend.
Just so everyone knows, their Attending Memberships are SOLD OUT for this year.
-
Sigh. That lets out the possibility of a last-minute lottery ticket and my professor deciding not to have a midterm on Friday after all.
Oh well.
-
There are people who are selling their tickets online. Check out their livejournal here: http://community.livejournal.com/worldfantasycon/
There will probably be a few going up for sell right before as people realize they can't come.
-
According to the list, we have 13 people coming from Utah... and there might be more from the forums showing up.
There is a small park across the street that we can all meet up for lunch/dinner if people want to. What are people's plans for the convention? Any plans to hang out after the con?
-
Since I don't know what people look like, if someone at the con wants to meet up, send me a pm. I'll be checking my email throughout the day.
-
It shouldn't be too hard to find Dan. Just follow the smell of bacon and the trail of blood. He'll be the one with the bloody steel-clawed gauntlets.
-
He is also doing a panel on Sat at 4. So if I avoid the bloody bacon scent I can say hi to him there.
-
I wish I was there... *sigh*
Hopefully someone is putting Dan's appearances up on YouTube. I can use those to tide me over until I go next year!
-
I would if I could. Sadly I have one of the non-video-taking iPhones.
