Title: New Marvel Set
Post by: Fellfrosch on March 11, 2005, 02:21:51 PM
My first thought was, "not another Marvel set!" But the details really got my attention: Much like some of their MAge Knight sets, every booster of Fantastic Forces will include a double-sized figure--either a giant character or a double-based figure. They're also introducing a speed type called transporter, which I can only assume is a new way of carrying other figures (perhaps to represent that some giant figures can carry normal-sized figures despite not being able to fly). It also sets us up for the Batmobile, which I predict will be the next super-sized convention figure to come out of DC.

I did get the Demon and his limited edition counter-part. I assume you're not talking about the Legacy set, huh? Hmmm.... confusion.

So much of that confusion could be solved by clicking the link. There's an old testament allusion in this situation which I find most amusing.

That's what you're for Fell. To allude my situations (if not others) from their disillusioned states.

HCrealms has a thread with quotes from Brother Magnus (on of HC's designers) about Fantasitc Forces:
http://www.hcrealms.com/forum/showthread.php?s=0d49ba3a0148d91e940d55b9ffea63af&threadid=128148

All the Giant and doubble based figuers will be REVs and not LE/Unique.

Transports probaly won't allow carried figs to move and attack.

Another place stated there won't vheicles added to HC with this either.  So no batmobile for now (the next DC set will not have this booster build so probaly no transports or large figs).

Fell will be intrested in this, one of the rumored Giant figures is a Hulk (possibly the version with Ironman armor).  Another rumored Giant figure is Mr. Fantastic.

Hulk with Iron Man armor?  As a giant?  What?

(This is actually a plea for someone to fill me in.  I don't follow comics.)

I don't remember that either, but it sounds cool. And a giant-sized Mr. Fantastic is just what the doctor ordered--the fact that the previous Mr. Fantastic was lame really broke my heart.

Sorry, it wasn't the hulk in Ironman armor is was Iron-Man Hulk Buster armor wich is basicaly a huge, kinda looks like a cross between Iron-man and Juggernaut, armor that IM beats up the hulk with.

Interesting. the carry ability is exactly like we thought it was going to be, but Move and Attack is a nice surprise. I'm dying to know what other figures are double-based.

They're going to show some next week then after that the 8 weeks of previews are supposed to start.  You'll noticed that they moved FF's release date up a month from July to June a while ago.

Despite the new set coming out in June, the June prize includes a delightful new round of Wade Wilson: http://www.wizkidsgames.com/heroclix/marvel/gameresources.asp?cid=39805.

Kije, take note.

I so noticed that.  Maybe by June I'll be back at GPP, and I can score me some more Wade.

And did you notice the other prize?  Narya has got to have one of the strangest/most useless dials I have seen in a while.  A stealth flier that switches to earthbound mid-dial, only to switch back later.  And random other scattered powers.  Freaky.

Double-base figure rules: http://www.wizkidsgames.com/heroclix/marvel/gameresources.asp?cid=39825

Sounds pretty much like we thought it would. Kind of cool that they can end their turn on a diagonal.

Alternate Team Abilities: http://www.wizkidsgames.com/heroclix/marvel/products.asp?cid=39839

These are essentially just feat cards that replace all instances of one team ability with another--kind of a cool idea, and a big boost to theme teams.

the new juggernaut is also up

he looks a lot bigger then previous versions (model that is).
Title: Re: New Marvel Set
Post by: Fellfrosch on April 29, 2005, 09:19:53 PM
Very cool, model, but he still seems a little pricey for his powers. I'm assuming that he has no FF team ability because it's an LE version? That's kind of an odd choice.

and segues into a nice Quake / Force Blast option later in his dial

Hmmm...since when is a quake/force blast option "nice"?  The situations where you would opt for force blast over quake are so limited as to render that option pretty useless, in my opinion.  Or I may be missing something.

Title: Re: New Marvel Set
Post by: Fellfrosch on May 25, 2005, 04:45:03 PM
You know what's really sick about that Quake/Force Blast combo is that his damage is never greater than 2 when he has it, so one of the only reasons to choose Force Blast over Quake--a knockback of more than two squares--isn't even possible. If you're standing next to an ally and you don't want to worry about rolling to hit, and you don't want to actually do any damage, then Force blast becomes a good choice. In any situation outside of that very narrow one, Quake is universally better--it does all the same stuff and more.

That's a cool Johnny Storm, but it's an LE--does the real model look the same? I was unimpressed with their Mr. Fantastic figure, and I'll be very impressed if they do a bett Thing than the one we've already got, so I don't have much hope for the new FF. Though I suppose a Mr. Fantastic with a useful dial could be worth picking up--there's no point playing the team as it is, because his powers are so terrible.

They've got Thing, Mr. Fantastic, and Invisible Woman up on the FF figures gallery (R/E/Vs and LEs.)  Johnny Storm isn't there yet.

They need to stop putting that stuff online without telling me. What am I, chopped liver?
Title: Re: New Marvel Set
Post by: Fellfrosch on May 25, 2005, 07:32:10 PM
Okay: the new Thing is way lame, and his powers are, while authentic, boring. The new Invisible Woman sculpt is also lame, certainly not as good as the last one, and her powers are incredibly worse (at least at Rookie level, probably at Experienced as well). The new Human Torch is cool, and I'm willing to bet that the REV will be quite similar--all of the other FF members have LE sculpts that perfectly match the REVs so Torch might be the same. The new Mr. Fantastic model is arguably better than the old one, but his powers and point cost are unequivocally improved--especially in combo with Brilliant Tactician, which I'm going to say is the best feat in the set.

And that's in a set with some dang cool feats: Unstoppable, Shake Off, and Thunderbolts are all amazing. But Brilliant Tactician sill be very hard to beat--imagine it on an X-Men team or a Batman Enemy team where you could really abuse it. Me likey. I also like the implication in the Shake Off card art that there will be a giant-sized Hulk.

As for the other characters...I'm not sold yet. At this point I'm still in "buy the FF and a set of feats on ebay" territory. They'll need some killer figures to entice me to buy any boosters, let alone a significant number of them.

according to post at HCrealms there will be no hulk in this set.  That came from a WK employe.

Previews of figs, scuplts, and stats for FF.  There's a cool-looking Spidey, a souped up Hawkeye (all the stuff of Ultimates Vet plus transporter and ES/D), and some mega-sentinel from a parallel universe that's pink and 264 points.

Interesting. I like the shocker, I like the new sculpt of Juggernaught, and I like some of the X-Men and FF, but overall I'm not impressed. I'll probably just trade or buy singles.

That Spidy is cool.  I also like the look of Jolt and Dr. Strange.

Spiderman's stats are up, he's defiantly one I'd like to have.

http://www.wizkidsgames.com/heroclix/marvel/figuregallery.asp?unitid=7789

I also like Orphen's stats for 50 points

http://www.wizkidsgames.com/heroclix/marvel/figuregallery.asp?unitid=7788

Then, of course, there's the new "everyone is going to use" combo of Nimrod and Nova blast.
http://www.wizkidsgames.com/heroclix/marvel/figuregallery.asp?unitid=7965

http://www.wizkidsgames.com/heroclix/marvel/figuregallery.asp?unitid=7963

Finaly is Dr. Doom who I'd like to have just to Have a Doom, though I like the classic Doom better.

http://www.wizkidsgames.com/heroclix/marvel/figuregallery.asp?unitid=7350

And the winner of best feat card is Unstopable, this card is great and makes SS units so much better at such a low cost.

In the right team, Brilliant Tactician has much more potential than Unstoppable, but you have to design around it to break it. In any other situation, I agree that Unstoppable is the best all-around feat.

Rogue is up and is pretty cool, each character is like a different mutant has been absorbed then each version has at the end of the dial Steal Energy and Exploit Weakness.

Rookie with SS and Invulnerability

Experienced with SS/Invln that turns into RCE and EE

Vet with SS, BCF, Invln and Regen

Ok here are my FF pulls

U Orphan (yea I wanted him)
U Baron Blood
R/V Thing
E Human Torch
V Songbird
E/V Jolt
R/E Powerman
R/V Yellowjacket
E Ghost Rider
R Awsome Android x2

The only feet I got is Thunderbolts which I'll probaly give to Kije since that's good for an Ironman team.

I'll probaly pick up a card set since I want the rest of the feats, also sad I didn't get Doom or Spidy though at least I have trade fodder (baron blood).

As for the new paint jobs they're so much better it's crazy, just looking at the paint detail on Ghost Rider and Thing you wouldn't think they were mass-produced.
