Ever since Ninja day (http://www.timewastersguide.com/boards/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=other;action=display;num=1069687090;start=0") I've been thinking we need to do monthy events. I'm useing GRW as a launch for such events, hopefuly. Now I realy don't think we can or would want to do weeklong events every month, but I think we can easly do a single day once a month. Ninja Day got great support, and GRW is as well (which I that you). I'm thinking that one day (like a monday or wensday) on the last week of a month should be a theme day. We can easly set up a topic (or just keep useing this one) to take suggestions and get artices assigned.
So what do you all think? Talk at me.
-
sounds neat ;D
-
i think it's a fun idea that gives some focus. Something to advertise and talk about ahead of time. We need to get something less Japan oriented though. With ninjas and giant robots, Japan seems to have a corner on our market. Perhaps "Western" day or something.
-
Spagetti Western Week!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I love it!
Post World War III day would be cool too.
-
No argument there. I think the critera for chooseing a theme should basicly be
1) have we done it before, or something similar? if so how long ago?
2) Can we get a minimum of 3 articles for the day?
-
bimonthly or quarterly might be a little smarter/easier
-
Well that's why I posted this. Do you think we can do it every month? Or should it be bimonthly like Jeffe sugested. Also if we do it, should we try and do theme weeks everyonce and a while? Like twice a year, or 4 times a year?
-
I think we can do a theme day with three articles once a month. I mean, 30 days to get 3 articles shouldn't be that hard, especially if we decide on the theme ahead of time.
Potential themes:
gun fights
monkeys
dragons
superheroes
THeme weeks once a quarter might be doable, if we find something we're very excited about.
-
Oh i meant the gala weeks moreso than the day a month deal.
-
Howsabout REALLY Bad B-movies week?
Start it out with "FROGS" actual Tagline: "Today the pond! Tomorrow the world!"
Ahhhhhhhhh now that's a steaming pile O' crud!
-
uhm.
no.
-
I say, for June, we should do a theme day for the 60th anniversary of D-Day. I think if we start planning it now we can pull it out on the 6th. Right?
-
Hmm Gurps WWII lite, Savage Settings, and Axis and Allies I could do.
-
well we still have april and may before June. I do kinda want the theme day to take part the same time of the month each time so people aren't confuesed as to when they are. But I'm willing to make an exception for D-day, allthough we'd have to do on the 7th. The 6th is a Sunday, which is the Admins day off.
-
Right, thats fine.
There's a couple movies that could be reviewed. Saving Private Ryan, Band of Brothers (although, that could take our own band to complete), Thin Red Line, I'm not sure if there are any others.
For video games there Battlefield 1942 and Call of Duty could be reviewed.
Jeffe's RPGs are good.
And if I could kick myself to do some reviews I could posibble do an article on a few WWII books I've read.
-
Enemy at the Gates.
We could do it a week in advance, and make it May's theme day. that way people have time to prepare for D-Day.
-
Is that on DVD? I've been meaning to see that.
-
That's been on DVD for a couple years now. It's pretty good. I recommend it.
-
So make mays theme day D-day then and say have it the 31st of may (a monday)?
-
that's my thought on it. We were talking about doing them end of the month anyway, it seems if we did it ON D-Day we'd be doing one at the end of May then one a week later in June. Then the next would be almost 2 whole months later at the end of July. Kinda defeats the "once a month" thought.
-
What should we do for April?
This month was sci-fi and may is WWII, so maybe fantasy or early history (like anytime before the 16th centuary)?
-
I vote for classical civilisations for next months, simply because i'm interested in that.
And i'll review Battlefield 1942. I play it lots. Well, i play the mods for it lots, but thats not the point.
-
any specific era or civilization?
-
A sort of Age of Empires, Mythology, Civilization trend?
-
...classical.
Ok, so thats a lot of stuff to cover, but that way everyone can concentrate on their favourite civilisation. I could talk for an entire article about the ancient mesopotamians. (Spelling). Etc.
-
The Thin Red Line - I had to study that in school. Great film.
Don't ask me about classical civilisations, and I know precious little about WW2 stuff also. But yeah, Theme days are a great idea, I say once a month is best.
-
maybe for one month(dont have the slightest clue which) we could do an ancient history legnd theme, like the summerians, egyptians etc. and their creation myths and stories, maybe tie in something about atlantis... i dunno, just a shot in the dark here.
-
hrm... "mysterious disappearances" that has potential.
-
If you do use that idea i could right a crazy-good article, me and my family is way into that kind of stuff, actuall my older sis graduated from the university of chicago with a major inn that kind of stuff.
-
As long as you write, you know, well. Your more than welcome to do it.
-
shweet! I'm an okay writer but my spelling and punctuation is atrosous, so before submitting anything I'll edit it like crazy, but if the idea is used then you can expect one crazy-go-nuts article from this fuzzy.
-
How do you feel about writing reviews... we always need a few articles....
If your real good you may even get free stuff.
-
reviews...of what may I ask?
-
games, movies, other timewasting events.... I have an on again off again cooking column.
-
hmm... I'm not a very big gamer, or moviegoer, but cooking is something my freinds and family tell me i do very well, and do like it a lot, been doin it since i was five... so would i review peoples food or cooking shows or something like that?
-
actually that would be great.
-
alright, I'll try to have a review done by. oh say, saturday. thanks again for the idea., and now to bring it back on topic... maybe we could devote a month to futurism, do one of those cheesey world of tomorrow columns...
-
Ok thanks for the imput people. I do think "classical Civilizations" is a good theme for next month but I do feel it's a little broad. Shall we say nothing later then the roman or Bizantian empire? Now can we get at least 3 articles on the subject?
-
TFO, you REALLY REALLY should go to the main page. Just click the banner at the top of the page, and look at the actual site content. Note the different departments and types of reviews and articles. Get a feel for it.
As for free stuff, note that very few people actually get free stuff.
Sprig, I dont' think anything later than the Byzantine Empire could be considered Classical anyway. I confess, however, to being a little dry on ideas for an article I'd contribute for it. I suppose I could revew the Iliad or the Odyssy or something.
-
Thats my problem too, I can't realy think of what to write either. I probaly could do CIV 3 review. That's why I want to know if we actualy could get enough reviews for that theme. If not we'll have to come up with something else.
-
Well, you run the risk of being too narrow if you say only romans or only greeks.
But for 'classical' you could review...
Gladiator
Sparticus
Praetorians (PC game)
Aeneid, Odyssey, Illiad, any number of greek trajedies and the epic of Gilgamesh
Discussions on ancient greek philosophy
Articles on how you could roleplay in the time period
If i get my hands on some, i could review the warhammer ancient supplements for the period - there are several (Chariot wars, fall of the west, alexander the great).
Mummy, mummy 2, Scorpion king
Age of mythology (pc game)
etc
-
Well the traditional realm of Classicism centers on the civilization of ancient Greece, Hellanism in Asia and the civilisation of Ancient Rome, and not generally Byzantium (sometimes its included, sometimes not.
-
I know, I just wanted to set what people could write about.
-
I studied Medea in School last year, I could write something on that, if I can think of what. (For an essay I'd need to dig it out and read it again, and a review doesn't feel appropriate)
-
Well game wise I'll do FVLMINATA armed with lightning and maybe Life of Brian.
-
I realized that I have several sets of lectures on the classical era (Famous Greeks, Famous Romans, Great Ancient Civilizations of Asia Minor, History of Rome, Alexander the Great and the Hellenistic Age, Ancient Greek Civilization, THe Iliad, the Odyssey, Greek Tragedies, Classical Mythology, An Introduction to Greek Philosophy, History of Ancient Egypt, Herodotus: Father of History, World of Byzantium, History of Science: Antiquity to 1700, Ethics of Aristotle, Plato, Socrates, and the Dialogues, Practical Philosophy: The Greco-Roman Moralists). Which of those, if any, would you like to see a review on? They're college level CD recordings.
-
Is that something we realy need a review of SE? I know those are the ones from the company you use to work for, but I think that might be stepping out of the bounds of what we reveiw.
-
well, the history ones I thought people might have interest in them. I don't think they're much different than an audio book in terms of who would be interested. But that's why I ask. Would anyone be interested in seeing the review. If not, I'm sure as heck not going to write it. (though I hope so, because maybe I can get hold of the marketing dept over there adn get a few of the lectures I've wanted, like the Crusades and the Ancient Near Eastern Mythology but were released after I left))
-
Yeah, i meant to mention armed with lightning jeffe.
SE : GIMME! Give me! Give me!
-
Frankly guys, the amount of stuff we can review, we might as well turn 'classical' into a week. Either that or split the bugger up like spriggan said - it looks like we could end up with loadsa articles on it.
-
well, what day in April are we doing it? last week? I can probably do two sets of lectures by then. which do you want?
-
Lets aim for april 26, which is the last monday of the month.
-
Ancient Civilizations of Asia Minor, History of Rome, Alexander the Great and the Hellenistic Age, World of Byzantium.
Me wants these. Review them, and then i know whether or not its worth paying $15 to send a couple CD's to the UK.
-
they are pretty good to.
-
ok, i'll probably do Asia Minor and Alex the great. The Rome one is a larger course and might prevent me from finishing. Asia Minor and World of Byzantium are done by the same guy so that would be redundant.
-
the famous greek one could be done piece by piece...
-
I could do an article on Roman polytheism and it's evolution into monotheism which marked the ending of the classical period.
-
That would, however, be out of the scope of our site.
-
oh... what about myths of the time?
-
Dude, go check out the articles and reviews we already have. We want things that can be used ingame. Stuff like you are suggesting is background. We want application of that background - try talking about how the various classes within greek society interacted, and how this would affect RPGs set there - that could be useful to GM's.
-
See, the point of the site is entertainment: games (of any sort) books, music, movies. Review someting. Or write an article about how to use or do one of them.
-
Hang on... i think his stuff could be good background for a Roman game.
-
Well i was thinking if you know more about the myths behind gads and monsters that are in these games it could
A: help you better understand the background and possibly plot/refferences
B: help to make your own game(if you plan to or are) more interesting and mythologically accurate.
-
Hang on... i think his stuff could be good background for a Roman game.
My feeling is that any GM would do his own research on this sort of thing. We should aim to offer our own brainwaves on the subject. If i run a game set it rome for example, i do not want to read some other RPGers re-iteration of things i would have needed to know before running the game, but i might be interested in his opinions on how things could be used in an rpg perspective.
And i am tired, so that makes NO SENSE.
NONE
-
yeah, were you to do such an article, connect it to gaming somehow. that would be worth using.
-
This months theme day is in 6 days (next monday), are you people going to have anything done for it?
Incase you forgot, this month is anchent civilizations (you can all thank Entropy).
I don't have anything I can think of for this, so this is all on you guys.
*Cracks whip*
-
Uh...
Hum...
(Scratches head in thought.)
SE gave me some lectures on tape about Egypt.
Or, uh, we could do a one-year-early review of ELANTRIS. It's kind of about an ancient civilization.
(Sorry, guys, I'm scraping the bottom here.)
-
there were a lot of ideas before.
I'll have a review in soon for one set of lectures. The other one will be done later in the week.too bad I didn't get avalanche to send me one of their game products on Byzantium or somethign
-
Well, crap. That was quicker than expected.
-
get to work, Entropy. THis was YOUR idea after all.
Here's the list of things to be potentially reviewed (just to collect them from earlier in the thread):
Gladiator
(all Entropy suggestions)
Jeffe said he'd do Fulminata and Life of Brian.
JP mentioned maybe doing something on the Medea.
THen there's my two promised reviews already.
And if we come up short, we could link to some old reviews. I did Atlantis and the Age of Mythology board game that we could resurrect.
edit: oh,a nd I may condescend to review Ben Hur if I find I have the time.
-
This is monday right? Are we emailing reviews to SPrig? Or just posting them normally?
-
eh, just submit them normaly and I'll get Fell or Tage to link to them.
-
Crap, due to internet issues I cant submit untill tomorrow.
-
Do we have any others for today? If not I don't think it would kill us to do this tomorrow.
-
Tomorrow!
-
yeah, I had a throw-uppy kid on Saturday and another kid who has soemthing wrong with her and we can't figure it out, so I've been doing more parenting than even usual. I have two reviews I can do, but they won't be ready for today.
However, I want to reiterate that there are at least two old reviews we could link to on the front page again to get the week started, esp. if we'll have new content for tomorrow.
-
so do we have stuff for today?
-
Its coming, its coming, I have to edit a little.
-
I've had problems. LEt's pick on Entropy and blame him.
-
Its in!
-
It's edited!
-
Its EVIL!
not really but it seemed appropriate
-
/me picks on himself
I won't be able to get anything done.
-
I just submitted a review of an audio "book" on the Hellenic Age. But uh.. I'm not going to do the other one if "Classical Civ Week" is a bust.
-
It was meant to be a 'classic civ DAY'.
-
well, let's do it friday then
Are we going to have more than 2 articles by then?
-
I dont think I'll be able to review LOB, but Im sure I'll find something.................
-
Ok we are going to post these artilces on Friday no matter what you guys have done. Since EUOL and Tage will be out of town I'll e-mail Fell on thurday evening or friday morning with what artciels to post. Thanks for stepping up and helping out here and remember next months is WW2 (prefeably something to do with d-day if you've got it). This will happen May 31st (the last day of May which is also the last Monday).
And while its still 2 months away, I'll start takeing suggestions for June.
-
SE, I think you know as much as me on what needs to be posted today. Why don't you try out your new powers by posting the 3 articles for theme day.
-
yeah, I'll do that in a moment, I just approved them. Blurb writing coming in a moment.
-
You might want to do some ol' HTML formatting of Jeffe's articles there. ;)
-
you mean like <P> tags? Yeah, I'll get on that. The blurb is up. btw. Tell me if something is out of place.
-
sorry forgot to add those....
was trying to beat the deadline.
-
You might also want to change the title from :
for clasciv day!The Great Ancient Civilizations of Asia Minor
to The Great Ancient Civilizations of Asia Minor
-
Did I *ask* for comments from the peanut gallery?
oh yeah, i did. thanks.
I don't think I realized how much I had left undone till the last couple days. This will give me a new appreciation for all Fell used to do.
-
Well I'm allwayse happy to format any articles that need it.
-
Just wanted to point out a typo on the main page. The link to Skar's review of The Scorpion King is spelled wrong (there's an A there instead of an O in Scorpion).
No big thing, but figured you'd want to know about it.
-
I like scorpians
edit:
I fixed the typo. Thanks.
-
I know we've got 4 weeks till the next theme day, but I'd like to advoid last months delay.
It's WW2 day, if you've got something you'd like to write for that let me know, or post it here. I'd like to have some idea what we'll have with in 2 weeks.
-
Gurps lite WWII rules.....
Its a TOC/RPG special...
-
I'll try and chug my way through "Stanlingrad: The Fatefule Seige." Plus I'll try and get something for Cornelius Ryan's "The Longest Day." I have a week of classes and then finals. So I'll have some time to do those things. Hopefully. I'll just need a little fairy to remind me every day.
-
I have a book called The Best War Ever or something like that, that I've been meaning to read. I could review it (though I'm not a war history buff, so anything I say is completely from a lay perspective). Or I could review a movie--I'll have to think about which one.
-
Hmmm I could review the Greatest Prison Break movie ever... The Great Escape!!!
-
That is an awesome movie. I have to watch it about once a year. ;D
-
now, see, what we're looking for is NOT for someone to say "I could do this" but "I will have this review written and submitted by two or three days ahead of time so it can be editted and posted on the theme day"
Now, how many people are willing to make that commitment?
-
Me....
Gurps Light WWII
The Great Escape
-
Dosen't Axies and Allies: D-day come out this month? If so we should defanly get a reveiw for that.
-
Yeah I just have A&A Pacific and it SUX
-
The best part about DDay was its codename
Operation Overlord....
Sounds like a Star Wars episode if I ever heard of one.
-
Yeah I just have A&A Pacific and it SUX
So Dan tells us. (http://www.timewastersguide.com/view.php?id=14)
-
Well we have one old article that we can link to. There's probaly some more, though I'm thinking we might want to set a limit of how many old articles we should link to. Once we do a fantasy theme (which is what I'm aiming for in June or July) we could link over half our RPG section.
-
When would it have to be done by? I will commit to reviewing The Best War Ever.
-
We'd like to have them all by the 24th of this month. But the dead line is the 28th.
-
Well I know what im doing tomorrow....
-
by the way If Saint can get in touch with Shane at Pinnacle in time, he can request some Weird Wars D20 books that focus on WWII
I'd review it if it got here quick,... even a pdf would be ok (I think they have em at RPGNOW).
I remember them being cool.
-
If you have a request such as that Jeffe, send an email to both Fell and SE with what you want and the contact info for the company. If you don't it's more then likely that it'll never get done.
-
He already has the contact info, Im just reminding him to try to get it done.
-
The only thing I can think of off the top of my head is the movie "Life is Beautiful", which is utterly fantastic.
-
There's so many WW2 movies that we could never cover them all. Which is good since it means those that only want to reveiw them can with out much worry of someone else doing so.
Someone should let Mustard know about this. I'm sure this is one topic he wouldn't mind writeing an article for.
-
Gemm loved band of Brothers a lot, Im surprised he doesnt want to review it.
-
Hey Mustard read the last few posts on this thread. We want to do a WW2 theme day this month and wanted to know if you'd enliten us all with an article on the topic.
-
I'm changing my book. I'll be reviewing When My Name Was Keoko by Linda Sue Park, a novel set in Korea during the Japanese occupation. A great book. I'll read The Best War Ever and see if I can get a review together, but I trust my reviewing ability much more with fiction, so that'll be the one I concentrate on. If I do get the other one done, it'll be a bonus (maybe not necessarily for WWII day).
-
suggestion for the future, we need a pirate day. Probably on or near "talk like a pirate day" whenever that is.
-
September 19th
-
I'm thinking of makeing a calender system that would mark what day(s) were theme events for each month and what that teme is. It would also show who's said they (like to) help out. Also could let you submit what article you want to write and have an e-mail aleart. This, for various reasons, would have to be kept off site on my site.
-
my husband's been raving for months about that pirate game with the constructable ships, which isn't out yet,
-
Pirates of the burning sea?
-
Pirates of the Spanish Main (http://www.wizkidsgames.com/wk_article.asp?cid=38919&frame=Company_inthenews)? It comes out in July so we could do a reveiw or articles for it in September.
-
ooo. Those are pretty.
-
A friend at work gave me a great idea, so next wednesday Im going out with a digital camera and doing a short photo-article on the new WWII memorial here in Washington DC.
I think that'd be a cool idea for the WWII D-Day day.
-
That's awesome. If we ever have a colonial/Revolutionary War day, I could shoot some patriotic Boston area pics (Old Statehouse, U.S.S. Constitution, etc.).
-
That's awesome. If we ever have a colonial/Revolutionary War day, I could shoot some patriotic Boston area pics (Old Statehouse, U.S.S. Constitution, etc.).
And i could write an article named, 'Why america is worse off without British rule' :P
-
and then we could stop laughing at you behind your back! And start laughing at you to your face!
-
:D
-
Camera... Check
Disks for Camera.... Check
Map to parking for WWII Memorial.... Check
Powerbar..... Check
Day off.... Check
-
And i could write an article named, 'Why america is worse off without British rule'
I'm sure lots of you saw the "letter from Queen Elizabeth to the US", revoking independence, back during the 2000 election recounts. I thought that was hilarious. My favorite part was about the French.
-
Yeah, it was great. I made a post about it, and copied it, onto the board somewhere. Spriggan got stressed about it, amusingly enough.
-
Friendly reminder, about 2 weeks left to get your articles in.
-
man, I hope Attack! gets here soon then.
-
I could loan you band of brothers.... of course I know your wife wouldnt let you watch....
/me thinks of the irreperable damage to Saints Kids from the endless violence....
:-/
-
One week left for articles people. We'd like to have them all by the 24th if possible. Me and SE need some time to look through them and get the final touchs ready. If you're working on something and cannot have it done by the 24th then post what you're doing for us and get it in no later then the 28th. Anything submitted after then will not make it into the theme day on the 31st. If this is the case please do NOT post that you'll have something by the 28th then not do it, that will annoy us and casue SE to send ninja monkeys after you.
If anyone needs reminders let me know, I'll be posting here again this week to remined everyone but I'll be happy to e-mail you a reminder as well.
-
Mid week warning everyone. Get us the articles by monday if you can, if not let us know what you'll be sending us by next friday.
-
If SE or whoever wouldn't mind, could I do that essay thingy that seems to be included?
-
Essay? Please explain I don't feel like reading back posts.
-
Essay, editorial, same alikeness.
-
yeah, I'm still entirely uncertain what you're talking about. You want to write an editorial? WHat I don't get is that you're implying it's a typical thing, which it isn't.
-
If you have any doubts Gemm just post here or e-mail me a brief outline/synopious of what you want to do. A paragraph would be fine.
-
Basically I'm just going to write an 'essay' of sorts, as a sort of memorial for WWII vets, and as well go through some of the major events of the war. Possibly run through some important figures, and (some help would most likely be appreciated on this one) possibly have a list of those veterans that are still alive today.
Something like that.
-
hrm... Like, important veterans that are still alive, right? More of a history lesson then? Are you sure you can't convert that into something that can be used with games or books or movies?
-
I think the premise of the "Essey" is too large,... more than a couple of thousand words and this audience will get bored or tired of scrolling...
What you've proposed is a Doctrinal Thesis, which could span for thousands of pages... Its not that its a bad idea, I just dont see it being written in 3 days.
Focus on one event, or one person, or try to link the Zeitgeist to the world now and you've got something...
(Focusing on forgotten areas of the war would be interesting... like indochina, Iraq and the power play there, or perhaps something more up your alley like Staligrad.)
Heck talk about Ms. Pavlachinko
Liudmila Pavlichenko (as spelled in the New York Times; another spelling is Lyudmila) was a lieutenant in the Soviet Army and in May 1942 was cited by the Southern Red Army Council for killing 257 German soldiers [total confirmed "kills" during WWII: 309]. She was invited to appear before the International Student Assembly being held in late August in Washington, D.C., where she received a hero's welcome....
Later she attended C.I.O. meetings and made appearances and speeches in New York City. When she left for her trip back to the Soviet Union, she was presented with a Colt automatic pistol, a hero's gift.
-
killer Russian chick. Right up your alley, Gemm.
-
Hmmmm, maybe she has some grand-daughters or something like the such.
But on the up and up, hows about I focus on the war and video games. Since there have been many a game about the era, I'm sure it would be assimilatible.
-
that sounds more like our style as well as more doable.
-
It's that time, so if you've got articles please submit them or e-mail them to me. Or if you're working on any articles and will have them done by Friday please let us know.
-
I let Eric know,...
-
we have one WWII article in from Gemm. I have a review of Attack! and the Attack! Expansion (which sadly, looks really cool but I've been unable to get a play test in).
And Jeffe, I think, is still doing that photo essay. Stacer, is that book review still coming?
-
You know it'll be a real shame if we don't get an article from Mustard for this.
-
yeah, it will.
BTW, we're running these on FRIDAY. That TWO DAYS. I have to write a big blurb and so on, so I do NOT have time to edit stuff Friday morning before I post. These need to be submitted NO LATER than 8am eastern TOMORROW. That gives you around 22 hours.
-
umm it's Monday SE, not Friday.
-
please disregard the rantings of the madman above (i mean myself). It's all the stress of this responsibility. Stress, I tell you! STRESS!
/me goes off to take a bite out of someone's head.
But seriously, give me the weekend then. I thought we had planned to do it a whole week before D-day, which for some reason, I thought was tomrrow. I have no explanation for that thinking except pure craziness.
-
We'd planed to do it before d-day and we're trying to do theme days on the last monday of everymonth. Was only an honest mistake, no biggy.
-
Judas Iscariot!! Well, I suppose that I really ought to read this thread once in a while. Still, I'll commit to getting at least two articles done for you.
How come no one tells me these things!
-
stop blaspheming the name of the great ... er... oh wait. JUDAS Iscariot. Right. Yeah, We'd love to see something from you.
-
Given the fact that I was completely oblivious to this whole thing, is getting them to you on Sunday too late?
-
the sooner the better, but 24 hours should suffice. So ok.
-
I wrote the review yesterday, but don't have the file on my work computer. I need to look it over again because it may have organizational issues. I intend to get it to you by tonight, probably right about AS time.
-
Judas what?
-
Iscariot. Perhaps I didn't enunciate clearly earlier.
-
Right, but wtbutt is he?
-
Also SE, if you want me to add links to the TWG reviews I can do that.
-
He was the apostle who betrayed Christ. The exclamation 'Judas Iscariot!' is basically the watered down version of taking the Lord's name in vain. It's like saying "crap" instead of "s***".
Really, it's not an exclamation I should be making, but there you go.
-
really. How did you get through a year of college and 13 years of public education in the US without knowing who Judas is? Man, I fear for our educational system.
anyway, it's an ironic exclamation too. because calling it out is hardly blaspheming anything holy.
My response was SUPPOSED to be funny. in that I emphasized "Judas" specifically. As if there were another, more holy person with the surnamed "Iscariot" that we should all be familiar with.
Next time I make a joke, I'll be sure to over explain that one too.
-
I just didn't recognize the last name. Because they always taught it as Judas Iscariot. :P
-
I always read his name as 'Judas IsChariot'.
-
Thanks to all of you we're going to have a lot of good articles for monday,Jeffe and mustard are still working on projects and I know they are going to be very cool.
Now is the time to start think up June's theme. I'm thinking it should be a fantasy theme of some type or a deparmnt theme. Deparment themes are something I was thinking of doing that could be very cool. They would rely on mostly non-review articles (probaly only one review). So for example if we do an RPG theme day we would have one product reveiw and lots of artilces on RPG, like how to put the Epic into your campaign, how to start of adventures, what setting/system is right for you, etc.... But feel free to suggest what ever you want.
So lets get to decideing since we only have a month!
-
I'd say rather than do a department day, which is a little broad, do a theme within it - such as Fantasy RPGs, or Universal genre RPGs or something. Just doign a department, while cool, seems a bit run of the mill and not really exciting.
-
The point of them is to get non review articles, but I see your point. Maybe haveing them be things like "How to run campaings" or "how to create your own setting".
-
Ok I have an option....
I could give you guys a movie slideshow with music for download....
or
just links to the photo's on photobucket for the article
-
links, please. We don't want to make people download.
-
ok well I have to write them all down and add them in...
-
Just so you know SE, here are the articles I'm writing:
1) a review of Desert Rats vs. Afrika Korps, a new RTS about tank battles in Northern Africa.
2) a review of Warhammer WWII, an unofficial variant of the Warhammer 40k rules.
3) if I have time, I'll also write an editorial
-
I'm also going to be starting the contest for Desert Rats vs. Afrika Korps, i've got a copy sitting on my TV to give away. Me and Entropy have discussed a bit on what to do for the contest but nothing has realy struck me as a "fesable" contest.
-
hrm... Monday would be a good time to start it, y'know.
-
yep, that's why I posted that.
-
I don't know if this will affect the give-away, but I'm going to give it a bad review. Maybe three or three and a half stars. If I give it a bad review, no one will want to go to great lengths to recieve a copy. Do you want me to hold off on that?
-
I will want it! >:(
-
3 is not really a bad review anyway
-
True. I'm not going to trash it. It's just kind of average. I got a real kick out if for the first few missions, and then it got boring.
-
Uhm, you already did an article on Warhammer 40k WW2 mustard.
And that contest, idk. Make everyone tell us why hitler was doomed to lose ww2 - most amusing result wins.
-
Actually Ent, this is something else. The article you're referring to was an editorial about Historical Accuracy(and there's only three paragraphs about the WWII rules). After writing that article, and talking about those rules, some reader (I can't remember who--it was like 2 years ago) emailed me and let me know of another set of rules that are really incredible--there are actually 63 different, highly-detailed army lists.
EDIT: Holy crap. I just went back and looked, and it looks like I have talked about these rules before. Still, it wasn't a review--only a couple editorial comments, so I think we're okay running a review.
-
Ok its in... but it needs a little editing Saint. Especially the HTML. Im afraid Im really pressed for time this week. Still all the links are there so if people want they see the pics.
and if anyone wants a sneak peak...
http://img32.photobucket.com/albums/v97/maddrjeffe/WWII/
-
Wow, Jeffe, you got some GREAT shots. Great lighting.
-
Yeah, just after dawn.... or at dawn for some of the river shots.
Sony Mavica Camera with a telephoto lens.
-
ok, I have Gemm's essay edited, the GURPS WWII review edited, and the WWII book Stacer reviewed edited. The photoessay is edited but not formatted. I was hoping to put them in the essay itself, but the picture's dimensions are too large to fit comfortably in our format. Maybe I'll work soemthing out where pictures will show in a popup of a regulated size, and then always in the same window. anyway, I have to work too, so I put this off, since it was more work. It'll still be running with all the others, no worries.
Counting my Attack! review that makes five articles. Plus two or three more from HoM. Honestly, I say we make this D-Day week. We can put one or two new articles up each day plus link to an archived article. Farewell to the King, Gear Krieg, Sudden Strike, and the Pianist will also get linked to as "old articles," as well as a possible two more essays by Fell.
Any objections to World War II week instead of day?
-
I must have misunderstood--I thought it was a week.
-
Maybe *I* misunderstood. But digging through the archives, we also have Commandoes III, Silent Storm, and at least one Axis and Allies review. We could conceivably do TWO "archive" articles each day, and we only need 3 confirmed articles more to do 2 new articles each day. HoM, if I give you till next Friday, can you promise me the essay you mentioned "if you have time"?
I can break the Attack! and Attack! Expansion into two reviews, that means I only need one more article to run 4 articles every day next week. Come on, someone cough it up.
For example, the GURPS WWII review we have is GURPS WWII "Lite" someone want to do an additional one for the full version? Someone want to spend money on Axis & Allies D-Day and review it? It's a long weekend, after all.
Which brings us to the last possibility. I'm certain I can get at least 18 articles, 8 of them new. Do we want to run stuff on Monday (a holiday here in the US) or just Tues-Fri? I think it'd be good to do it on Monday, since it is, after all, "Memorial Day."
-
GURPs WW2 only includes GURPs lite. It doesnt have the full gurps rules. So they can't do a review of it...
-
Yes, I can guarantee the editorial. And I think that, if possible, Jeffe's photo essay ought to be on Monday.
-
oh.
Well, I decided anyway. I was talking to my coworkers, trying to decide on a flick to review. And so I asked for the "Best" and I still got a string of 20 some movies off the top of their heads. The Great Escape, Guns of Navaronne, Patton, Saving Private Ryan, etc.
So...
I'm resurrecting Staff Picks.
Best WWII movie. Need responses by Thursday, no later. 50 words per movie, no more than three movies.
This does not preclude submitting more articles for next week. THe more the merrier, but we're going to do a staff picks.
-
What do you bet Pearl Harbor won't make anyone's list?
-
yeah, I was talking with the guy in his 50s who loves movies about it, and one of the girls chimes in with Pearl Harbor. So we spent several moments mocking her.
-
No SE you're right it's supposed to be a day only. However, I have no problem extending it to a week if we have the contenet. The reason I went with theme days over theme weeks is that it's less stress on all of us to get done. It's ok to link to old artilces, but there should never be just links to old articles for a day there allwayse should be new stuff for each day. also if we can get 2 new articles for as many of those days as possible is a plus.
-
well, that's what I'm planning. I want two new each day. I know I have old articles enough, and I have enough to do at least one new a day, I just want to try and have two new ones a day. The Staff Picks article should allow that.
-
I got that from your post at the top of this page, I was just talking in general. Guess I should have actualy said that though.
-
ok, day 1 is up.
Just a reminder, that HoM promised me two mroe articles, I'll need one of them no later than Wednesday, and the other no later than Thursday night.
Please email me your Staff picks choices asap.
Also, if you were still planning on submitting something else, there's still time.
-
Fell asked me about a month ago if I could copyedit the articles, and now seems like a good time to offer my services. Jeffe's article has several typos and grammatical errors (mainly punctuation) that I'd like to help out with correcting. How should I go about doing that? I could just copy it into word, make the corrections in red or highlight them, and email them to you, Saint. Would that work?
-
oo yeah, my bad. I didn't really edit it very much when I was doing the others, and this morning I just formatted. So yeah, I'd REALLY like those corrections. Please email them to me. As for the best way... uhm... I'm not sure. i guess copy to word and then correct. Didn't Fell make you a Mod on the site? If you are a mod, there should be a link named "Edit' at the bottom, and you can just change it by doing that. Let me know.
-
yeah sorry its a little sloppy, It was a tough week and I kind of cobbled it together at the last moment.
-
No link for edit. I'll email to you. Half done already.
-
Argh. Gotta run to a movie now. Will finish it as soon as possible after I get back (about 2 this afternoon).
-
if you haven't left yet, email me what you got, please.
-
I don't think I'll be sending any staff picks, I don't have any WW2 stuff that I like enough to comment on.
-
Just sent it to both your addresses and thelemur one returned. I'll try again.
ARGH! Foiled again.
EDIT: I've sent it a third time and it doesn't seem to have been bounced. Hope you get it.
-
looks like i got it. Thanks for the help!
-
Sorry Ehlers! I'm late, but it's Fell's fault. You'll have the editorial and staff picks today by noon.
-
The editorial is in -- it's so bloody long that Fell recommended you might want to split it into two installments. That would please me, because I wouldn't have to write a third article this week, but whatever you want to do...
-
sweet mother of crap!
Yeah, that's long. I probably will split it. I'll let you know in the morning when I run Wednesday's stuff and I see what's on the plate still.
-
actually, I know exactly what's on the plate. If we split that into two, I finish my Attack! Expansion review, and we do Staff picks, that fills out the week.
Still, any new WWII articles in by Thursday night I'll be happy to run, folks. Otherwise, that finishes us off for theme week this month. What's the end of June theme day?
-
Fabulous news Mr. Ehlers. Do you just want the Staff Picks emailed?
-
Also: How come no one has changed their names for this theme week?
-
Because a saint is always a saint. Even in times of war.
Also, because FührerEhlers would be poor taste.
and uh.. yeah, just email me picks. I'll put them all together.
-
Aren't you proud of me? I've never changed my display name, and now I've joined the crowd. ;) Walking out into a wider world, indeed.
-
Any thoughts on what I wrote about June's theme day (28th of this month)? If no one opines by the end of this week me and Entropy will decide and let you know. If we can we should deicded on Julys as well. Just to save you from looking back a few posts here's the small conversation me and JP had last week:
Posted by: Spriggan
Now is the time to start think up June's theme. I'm thinking it should be a fantasy theme of some type or a deparmnt theme. Deparment themes are something I was thinking of doing that could be very cool. They would rely on mostly non-review articles (probaly only one review). The point of them is to get non review articles, but I see your point. Maybe haveing them be things like "How to run campaings" or "how to create your own setting".
-
I would be able to participate with something if it were a little broader than RPGs (since I don't play them), but that's just me. I do like the idea of narrowing it down for non-review content, though. And I like the fantasy idea.
-
We'd like to have everyone be able to participate but that's not allwayse going to be the case. Anyway after talking to Fell and Entropy here is my suggestion for june and july.
June-Cyberpunk (Entropy has been wanting to do this)
July-something dealing with fantasty or RPGs
July Contest- HARP core book
Since we've got the Video game contest starting tomorrow or friday I think that doing the fantasy contest (and thusly the theme) in July. But since the theme day is on the 28th of June we could start it then.
-
Yeah, you can't always get everyone, no big deal.
-
Well I like to come up with things that lots of people have an intrest in that's why we discuss possible theme's on the boards. It's allwayse good to know what people like and don't like.
-
I think cyberpunk is a good idea, now that I have a better grasp of what is meant by the term.
-
If you choose Cyberpunk, you will get about 20 articles form me most likely. I'm a huge fan of the genre/movement. I could even write an article about the movement itself, I have a clue.
Actually, I have holidays soon, so now would be a good time to do it. I;'ll have time to write everything I want.
I've already reviewed Neuromancer.
But I could do: Schismatrix (But I'll let Entropy, sicne he wants to) Snow Crash, I already did distraction, Software, Maybe transmetropolitan (If you want to allow comic reviews, since this rules). I should have the cp2020 rpg by then. I also know a few cool free RPGs with the theme.
In the realm of VG, Deus Ex is old news, but I might be able to dig up something more modern. Big Maybe though.
Have we reviewed Blade Runner? Akira? The very post-cyberpunk Lain? I'm sure we have Matrix reviews we can look back on.
And that's off the top of my head. CD review of Billy Idol's Cyberpunk, maybe.
PLus I can pull out a lot of non-reviewage myself.
Feel free to choose Cyberpunk is you want to overwork me and make up for my lack of articles for WW2, basically.
BTW, anyone not quite sure of the term, I'd recommend the alt.cyberpunk faq. Then read some of alt.cyberpunk.chatsubo to keep up with the latest on the post-cyberpunk movement.
-
I suggest, not for a TWG theme, but for a Forum theme that June 11th (Sprig's birthday) be named the first official "TWG Spriggan Spelling Day."
That's a week from Friday, folks. Start honing your powers of miss-spelling! Posts without at least one blatant spelling error will be mocked relentlessly!
-
About all I could do for Cyberpunk is a reveiw of the Animatrix and how dissapointing it was. There were a few realy good shorts mixed in with a LOT of crap.
-
I like the Animatrix. A lot. But that's just me.
-
I'll do Schismatrix plus, review my GURPS books with cyberpunk applicable gear in them. I'll see if i can think of anything else in the meantime.
-
Well as so not to overburden us all, and so we can do another cyberpunk day sometime lets max of two articles a person? I guess if we got 10-12 articles we could do a cyberpunk week.
-
I say we set the date for submission a bit early, and then see how many we get. If we get tons, make it a week. If we get a few, make it a day.
-
well for now lets say we have 5 articles. 1 from me, 2 from you and 2 from JP (he said he'd do more, but he's like us and is lazy so I'm only expecting 2). And lets see what others think of this topic. 4-5 articles is good for a "day" event (which we have people willing to do), and if we get more people intrested in doing articles then we'll know if a week is a possibility. If it's just us three then lets just stick to the 5 articles.
-
Yes, oh grand and unfailable master.
-
heh, well the reason I said that is becasue I know that if it was left to me, you and JP to come up with 12 articles (10-11 of them between you two) then it would probaly not get done. We're all too lazy.
-
I'm lazy, but this is punk. punk excites me and makes me chitter like a portugese Rhino-sloth-cockroach-Monkey.
-
we've heard of your cross breeding experiments, and we condemn them.
My only contribution would be to gripe about a lot of cyberpunk. Oh, and I'll post the articles as normal. If you have five, I won't try wrangling anymore. There are plenty of old articles. I won't however, refer to more old articles than new ones.
-
We don't have that many old cyberpunk stuff anyway. This is Entropy and JP's theme and ,since Entropy is the other guy in charge of this stuff, if he wants he can be incharge of setting the deadlines and getting articles. That way he dosen't have to wory about me complaning about haveing to do it.
-
Hrm... I ran out of archive articles to run. How... disappointing.
So on that note, it'd becool to have a couple last minute reviews for tomorrow. Jeffe was talking about Band of Brothers last night. Can I push you into a hastily thrown together article?
-
Ummmm ok,....
-
good. I'm going to review Spiegelman's Maus as well. That gives us four new articles for Friday. YAY!.
-
Silent Storm is a WWII game that's in the archive. You could post that.
-
hrm... how did I miss it? Maybe I was getting Silent Storm and Sudden strike confused.
-
There's a cyberpunk story in this years WotF anthology. Suppose we could read that and write a review of it.
-
hey, didn't we already have Ninja Day? I was looking at your list of upcoming events and I saw it scheduled for 2004
-
Yes, but Ninja day is annual, just like Talk like a Pirate Day. I mean, come on, you can never have too many ninjas.
-
unless they are trying to kill you, then one is too many.
-
Uhm.... JP? I don't think we're actually going to run any "Spriggan Spelling Day" articles....
-
But it's Spriggan Spelling day! Think how upset Spriggan will be if you don't!
-
I'm thinking, not much.
-
How are the Cyberpunk articles comeing? Need them in two weeks from tomorrow (25th), and they're going up on the 28th.
-
Haven't started, will in a couple of days.
I'll start with Cyberpunk by Billy Idol, Snow Crash (I may want to re-read it though) Possibly software, though i'd need to re-read that first.
If I have the book by then, CP2020 gets the review treatment. Also this comic Transmetropolitan, very cyberpunk (Or retropunk as I have decided to call it. What you get when you make cyberpunk in the modern day, and it comes out a little postmodern.)
So expect from me: The Album, the comic. Probably a book, maybe an rpg. And I'll see if I can think of and have time to do more, but probably not, since I'm going on holidays in a week for a week.
-
I hope Jampaladin is happy. Since i just ordered Neuromancer (another person recommended it, and hey, i was already ordering from amazon) and OGL D20 Cybernet (Cyberpunk roleplaying).
Evil fingers in my wallet >:(
-
I've seen cybernet around, looks interesting, be sure to give us a review.
Oh, and if you havn't read Neuromancer, you just haven't lived.
-
Well I've been going through the site stats and with the exception of WW2 week the theme days and week have been very popular. Classical Civ day was actual our highest day so far this year! I am dissapointed that WW2 week was actualy lower since we had some of the best theme day articles for it. But from the charts we were in a downward trend for the last half of may and things didn't start to pick up until the second week of June, I'm pretty sure that the lull has to do with schools getting out, finals, summer starting ect.
-
I think WWII days proximity to memorial day could have also been a factor...
-
I must see these charts!
-
Ya Memorial day is another factor there I forgot about that.
As for showing the charts, sorry Gemm I can't put a link up. If Fell oks it I can probaly take a screenshot and post that.
-
Intresting thing is ever since SE left for vacation our hits per day have droped by a third. Humm think that with out him forceing them to the ninja monkeys aren't comming to the site. So we need to become more ninja monkey friendly, and the last poll didn't help the situation any.
-
Theme day is this UPCOMMING monday, so Entropy if you see JP on IM remind him. I won't be on till your and his monday morning.
-
whats the theme?
-
Cyberpunk
-
Umm...I'm really hoping your Monday is later than mine. I'm too tired to pull out anything tonight, but I can get you a second review before midday tomorrow. No luck on the books - CP2020 hasn't come in yet, and I managed to not get a lot of reading done in the week. (More on that on the thread I'll start later) Which means no book review. So expect the comic review tomorrow.
Hmm..Two articles - you were right - I'm lazy.
-
umm you've got about 38 hours from the time of your post. So about 35 hours from now. That would be noon my time, 2pm SE's time.
-
Plenty of time. If not, CP day can wait for me.
How's that for being arrogant?
-
If you were to combine, through some unholy mormon ritual, me and SE, you would probably end up with Arrogance made flesh.
-
If I were to combine you and SE, I would need something more unholy than mortal midns can comprehend, and you'd both end up cthulhu-ified before you had a chance to fuse.
-
if you combined the egos of me and Entropy, I think that the result could probably crush Cthulu in much the same way the Cthulu crushes humans.
-
Ok. Entropy has one in. I wanted to add a second opinion to that at the bottom, so I submitted my paragragh in the books section. Should be easy to find, paste into Entropies review, and delete the submitted one. (I would have done it myself, but it wouldn't let me.)
I also have my two in: the CD in other and the Comic in books.
I'd also recommend adding in a link to my old reviews of Distraction and Neuromancer, both in Books.
-
Sounds good, SE can just post those when he gets the chance.
So what should July's theme be? We do have a contest starting soon wich is the HARP core rule book.
-
I'll do what I want. (yeah, yeah, I'll do it on lunch, which is still 10am in Utah, so soon enough. I'm playing catch up from my week of being gone).
We could have a contest for making up a cool acronym for an RPG. For examples, there's:
TWERPS (The World's Easiest Role Playing System)
GURPS (Generic Universal Role Playing System)
TW(i)G (Time Waster's (insert vowel sound here) Guide)
and of course, HARP itself.
Eh, just my first thought. Take it or leave it.
-
We already have the contest saint. Thats my job. We just need a theme for the month.
-
Ya, the contest is pretty dang funny too, it involves Gnomes.
-
Entropy's article is copyedited. One question: for our ratings, should we consistently go with the American system, or should we just let each author's country's ratings system work for their articles? Case in point: Ent's rating is a 15, which I believe would translate to PG-13.
Also, that brings up spelling differences, too. Do you want me to correct Ent and JP's spelling to American English spelling, to be consistent across the site? I've hesitated to do this, because their spelling (when correct, of course ;D) gives the sense of their nationality as reviewers. Thoughts?
-
Nein!
A rating of 15 means you have to be 15 or older to see it. Parent or no parent. Legal requirement.
And I think we should maintain the country specific spellings. Our nationality can have an affect on how we review things. Plus, it's absolutely correct over here.
Incidentially, how many errors did i have?
-
uhm.... as for standardizing English, i'm not sure I have an opinion. I say leave it, as long as it's internally consistant.
As for ratings, I think we should do American ratings. We can look those up on Amazon if nothing else, to be sure what the US rating was. It's my impression (and I'm sure I'll be corrected if the impression is incorrect) that because so many movies made in the US get wide circulation elsewhere that most non-Americans have a feel for what those ratings mean already.
-
Incidentially, how many errors did i have?
Incidentally, ;) I didn't happen to be counting. Let's just say it was a good thing I looked at it. It was mainly spelling and capitalization, a couple readability issues where I changed a preposition or broke the paragraphs in two. Nothing out of the ordinary.
-
I'm begininning to wonder how we went for about 3 years without her fixing our mistakes.
-
Bordgames. That's how we've done things for the last three years.
-
look, to beat the pun into the ground, at least they weren't bored games. Or worse yet, Boring games.
-
Humm, we should have a boreing game section or theme day. I'm sure we could come up with a long list of games we wouldn't recomend.
-
Change my spelling to American and I will just deck you. I need my (cyber)punk rock style credability to amintain here.
I have no opinion on rating systems, but I beleive your R is 15, while mine is 18. In other words, I just give a number.
Edit: feel free to fix my spelling of "Maintain" though.
-
If by "your" you mean American, no, ours is 18, too.
-
I thought our R was 17 and older, or accompanied by an adult who is 21 yrs or older. Isn't that our 'R?'
-
Oh, um... yeah, maybe you're right. :P
-
I'm thinking fantasy for july since we haven't had a theme along those lines before. However, we do need to narrow down the topic a bit. I was thinking something to do with entropy's contest wich deals with gnomes. So maybe the theme would be fairy's and small folk (gnomes, hobbits etc)? What do you think.
-
good enough for me. I don't have anything coming up soon that would fit in though. THough maybe one of these novels I just got has a prominant little person.
-
I like it. I've got a few books I could pick from on the subject.
-
ok, if we run with it, I'll do a staff picks on it. "Favorite 'Little People' Character" from film or literature That one won't be due till end of the month, so it can run on the theme day.
I'll have to come up with a staff picks for sooner than that.
-
Well we do have a few old reviews to link too like the avalence one. But I was thinking since Fell gave you, SE, permission to contact any of those RPG companies for content if we might be able to see if any of them have such a supplement(s). I know mongoose does.
-
Yeah, I'll try to make the calls this week. Thing is, between picking my wife up tonight and SPider-Man tomorrow, I don't have much of a week left.
-
lol, maybe you can send me a formletter and I can send them some out.
-
I prefer to call, personally, they usually ask for an email so they have the link, but I can gauge what the response is better by phone. By email, they just never respond, not even to give me a no. punks.
-
Uhm.
In what universe does 'Parental Guidance for 13 year olds and up' equal '15 or over, parents or no parents'?
Because you basically just messed with the rating I put on. If I wanted 13 and up, i'd have put 12 as the rating. British ratings are U (kiddies) PG (parental guidance) 12A (recommended for kids over 12, but with a parent you can get in anyway) 12, 15, 18 (have to be the age it says on the packet.) So yeah, thanks for jacking down the age recommendation a couple of years. I put that on for a reason.
-
yeah, about that.
I may actually do something about it if you ever ask in a way that doesn't make you sound like an ass.
-
You disappoint me.
After all I have done for you. You were nothing. Nothing! Before I helped you up the ladder of newbie-dom, before I extended the hand of friendship.
And now, when I merely ask for a little something in return, a quiet service in exchange for past kindness, you blow me off. You act like you owe me nothing. You clutch that which I gave you, and betray my trust.
I don't want to have your kneecaps used for caviar dishes, but if this sorry state of affairs continues in this way I may not have much choice.
Think carefully.
-
uhm... I wrote the second article ever written for TWG. I was writing for TWG before there was a web site. And you think you made something of me. Ok, little man. More ninja monkies for you.
-
Ok, so here is the thing. You make two fairly noticable changes to my review. One without asking me, and the other you act as though I never spoke on the issue. Now, it is not as though I am never here, or that you couldn't get a hold of me. I was on the forum a lot that day. So, you make those changes without my permission. Fair, fine enough. Your right as front-page admin. But when I ask that you reverse one, you get on your high horse and make wounded noises without actually replying to my concern. And recently, you've been on that high horse a lot.
I may not exactly be the most frequent reviewer, but you are not really showing magnificent levels of adminship here. And the polls are really starting to get stagnant.

ok, i'm going to go ahead and try to keep this civil. Something I wish I would see from you, Entropy, since you constantly bring in irrelevancies specifically to annoy me. Incidentally, when you are so aggressive and insulting (such as questioning my intelligence by asking what planet I'm on, or bringing up another subject about how you don't like the polls), I have to assume either that you are joking or that you're just being a jerk. In either case, I'm not going to take it seriously. Here's what I have to say about it seriously:
One: If making changes to your article without permission was a problem, then you should have checked "Please ask for permission before making any changes." It's that simple. Therefore, I'm sorry, but I wasn't aware that it was a major problem to change something that really isn't so substansive to the article.
Two: As for why I think the conversion to an American rating is Most of our audience, to my knowledge, is still American. "Rating 15" means nothing to American readers. In fact, it would be a source of confusion to most, who may wonder if that's a rating of goodness or what. This even if they are familiar with the British rating system, since the context is a book review not a movie. I still feel that the conversion to an American system is more clear to the majority of our readership. But, since you presumably haven't checked, after my sarcastic remark about refusing to change it I *did* change it to "R." This is obviously not an exact corellation to "15" but it is much closer. I'm willing to meet you halfway and put "Rating: R (GB 15)" or soemthing. Would that be better?
Three: sort of a reiteration from my first paragraph. It's all well and fun if you want to joke around with me and be abusive and make fun of each other. But if you're serious about getting something done, or making a complaint, I REALLY recommend being less of a jerk about it. When you have a serious suggestion, using sarcasm and semi-witty insults are not taken seriously. I'm sorry that you feel I've been egotistical, but as you have pointed out repeatedly, we both have rather large quantities of arrogance. I'm not sure what has been bugging you besides two polls that had my name in them, one of which was completely self-denigrating and the other of which had as many insulting responses as self-glorifying ones.
I don't know what else to say.
-
Umm...ya... I realy don't want to get involved in this. But why couldn't you just do what I do with unrated anime (which most is) and just say "This x is sutibale for ages 15+" or something like that.
*Ducks so as to avoide all the poo that's going to start flying*

the only reason I haven't done that is for consistancy. most of the book reviews (at least, recent ones) have movie ratings on them.
-
When is the next theme day? And when do you want articles/reviews by? I'm going on vacation next week and need to know if it needs to be done before then.
-
Actualy they need to be in this week/next week. I wanted to do it this monday but that's not going to happen becasue I slacked. So hopefuly next friday if we can get articles.
The theme is fairy's and small folk (gnomes, hobbits etc). I'm going to have to go out and buy a rpg book this weekend to cover this one, but several others here stated they could do something.
-
Well, I'm leaving at 6am tomorrow and will be out all evening, so it won't be done before I leave. If I can get internet access while I'm in Chicago or at home before mid-next week, I'll submit. If you don't get anything from me by then, I'm sorry about that. But I'll still finish the review and submit it for later, if I don't get it in in time for theme day.
-
uhm... we never did little people. Who among us is close to having a little people article ready? I"m in the midst of a Dragonlance novel, which has two dwarves, a kender, and a gnome as main characters. I can't think of other material I've got coming up that fits it.
-
Oh, I thought I missed it when I was on vacation. I have a book I could whip out a review on by Friday.
-
Sprig, what's the plan for theme events? We've got two articles for a proposed little people day (neither actually in the system yet) and I know there's at least that many old ones we can run. What day do you want to do this?
-
I have a comment to make: I rarely read this thread, because it makes me feel bad that I don't write articles anymore.
But anyway: If I didn't read this thread, I would have no idea that theme events even happen. Is there any way to better announce them? Maybe with a graphic or something?
-
like a "coming soon" sort of thing on the front page?
Also, are we getting a Little People article out of you HoM?
-
I was thinking about it, but I'm not sure what I'd write. You can revive the old review I wrote for Warhammer: Dwarves. As far as little people go, maybe I could just write an editorial about miniatures, and miniature gaming.
I think a coming soon link would be great.
-
Pirate day is coming... ;D
-
Halloween's coming people. I want to run Halloween themed or at least horror/scary themed material on Friday the 29th. Get your scary stuff submitted by the 28th.
If you don't want to do anything else, revise or make a new entry for the Staff Picks (http://www.timewastersguide.com/view.php?id=605) feature we ran last year.
-
The people from Lionsgate did eventually get back with me. If I can get them to tell me exactly when and where the moview they invited me to preview is playing early I'll have a review of it for the theme day, since it coincides with the release day of the movie.
"Saw" incidentally. :P
-
That's great, Skar. And, since you are the movie guy, I'd like to be able to add your picks for that article I linked to.
-
I was hopeing to have Beyond the supernatural by now, but it looks like it's going to be a november release. So I need to come up with something else to do.
