review: Melusine
« on: April 10, 2008, 04:01:17 PM »
read it here: http://www.timewastersguide.com/review/1644/Melusine

I often see this book coupled with Elantris on Amazon.com so I wanted to see how it compared. While they have interesting city settings and some interesting magic, that's where the similiarities end. Where Brandon is strong on plot, Monette is weak. And while her characterization is more in-depth than Brandon's, I still didn't find myself caring about the characters like I did Sarene and co. Plus for some of us more easily offended readers, this book is rather...um...offensive.

Interesting review. :)
Clyde Bruckman: You know, there are worse ways to go, but I can't think of a more undignified way than auto-erotic asphyxiation.
Mulder: Why are you telling *me* that?
Clyde Bruckman: Look, forget I mentioned it. It's none of my business.

Heh. Interesting good or interesting bad? Have you read this book?  I'd rather like someone who's read it to comment on it. I had such mixed feelings about this book that I'm not sure I'm explaining it right.

I haven't read it, and your review makes me less likely to. The way you describe the plot as being an unconnected series of events is what red-flags it for me.
All Saiyuki fans should check out Dazzle! Emotionally wrenching action-adventure and quirky humor! (At least read chapter 6 and tell me if you're not hooked.) Volume 10 out now!

Yeah, which is really kind of sad because Monette isn't really a bad writer, her prose is nice and her characters well developed. The plot was just plain frustrating, tho. I don't want to risk reading the second book if it's like this one.
