I'm thinking we need to hit all the categories before we return to one. So let's look at books. Best non-fiction, either for value of the information or for ease of read, but preferably some sort of combination of the two. I'm thinking of ruling out scripture, but I don't know that I have a good reason for it.
-
I think it's a good idea to rule out scripture. Regardless of whether you believe it to be true or not, most bookstores have separate sections for non-fiction and religious books.
-
Non-fiction hunh you do realize boiling down my 500 book nonfiction library is going to be like selling my own firstborn.
-
non-religious, non-fiction then. got it? Good.
-
So a book about the Templars would be out?
-
written FOR the templars? Or about them as a historical phenomenon?
In the first case, yes, it's out. In the latter, go ahead.
-
I would have thought the about in the prior sentance would have given it away.
-
Then why did you ask?
-
because you said non-religious, non-fiction; implying that non fiction dealing with the subject of religion in a historical sense was out.
-
It doesn't imply that at all, at least, not in the original context of asking about scripture. But now that the question is cleared up, we can move on.
-
want to narrow it by subject even further? Best Art books, best books to use as game resources, best biography.
-
We'll get to that. I want to reserve crossing genres till later.
Incidentally, if there's something specific YOU'D like to see as a staff picks feature, let me know. [email protected]
Incidentally, this particular deadline is going to be October 10.
Limit your choices to three.
Limit your description to 55-ish words, max.
-
By "genres" i actually mean TWG categories/departments.
-
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!
-
2 things of the staff picl articles:
1)the link code should include _blank after the url. This opens up a new window to the amazon or other store page. We don't want people to leave TWG when they click on our links. I'm going to repost this request in "What I want for TWG" since I think all links on the site should be this way.
2) I think they should be in the other section not individual deparments. This way if they keep going there will be a way for people to sort them all (by adding a sort link to the other page).
-
1) I agreed in the "what I want" thread. I'll be doing that from now on (or as my VP says: "On a go forward basis," because God forbid he should talk like a normal person and not a business school retard)
2) Makes sense. My thought was that they'd see something related to what their interest was. Is there anyway to do cross department posting?
-
There's no way to do cross deparment posts or searching that I'm aware of. Tage would be the only one that would know.
-
ok, for now we'll just put them as "other"
-
*ding*
Just your reminder that these picks are due this Friday.
-
*ding*
These are due today. I thought for sure Jeffe would have something.
-
I have to admit, I don't read nearly enough non-fiction to make any kind of contribution to this topic.
-
ok, so maybe it wasn't the best choice. BUt that's too late
Kije contributed already, if Jeffe does, that's three of us.
-
If you were thinking of scrapping the idea, that's fine, if that's what's best. I won't be offended. But I was interested in what other people had to say.
-
Nah, we'll do what we got and come up with an idea for next time. I was thinking of going into video games next. Like RPGs.
-
I just sent you some. I hope I'm not too late.
-
NOt at all, I won't be assembling the information until tomorrow at work. Then, I'll be able to edit in additions until Sunday night.
-
I just wrote up the document, forgetting that I can't edit an article unless it is in the RPG dept. So if one of the powers that be can change the dept it's assigned to, I'll fine tune and edit it and change it back to "other" Sunday night so it can be posted monday.
-
well, it never got put into RPGs so I could edit it, but that's ok, because I didn't get anything to add to it. It should be good to go as is.
-
Yeah thanks to mind numbing illness I couldnt write this week.
-
I don't know if it's possible to have a link to the revie wthat I did for the Guns etc. book on th erecent staff picks, but it would be handy.
-
I thought I put one in. because I remember thinking "This is the only book on here we've reviewed"
OH well, guess we'll just have sprig or fell add it.
On that note, I can't decide exactly what to do for the next one. I want to do video games, but best video game ever? I guess. I don't feel right restricting it to a platform, since that limits the people interested in teh article further. Best RPG? Best FPS? Best RTS? What do you guys think?
-
Well, I know what RPGs are, but I have no idea what the other two acronyms are. I do think limiting it to one style of game is a good idea.
Oh . . . First-Person Shooter, and . . . nope, I don't know that one.

Real time strategy
-
Real Time Strategy
Like the Warcraft series
-
What about fighting games like Double Dragon, Tekkan, Soul Calibur-ar (whatever) or slice-n-dices like Dynasty Warriors (I love that game). Where do they get classified?
-
as something separate. My list wasn't intended to be comprehensive. Just suggestive.
-
My personal suggestion is RPGs since there are enough different games to give a wide variety. I'm afraid that RTS would bring up a whole lot of MOO, WC & SC.
-
That's what I'm thinking. Not for the same reasons, but still...
-
I think you need to stop posting suggestive lists, SE. This is a family friendly site (well, except for Gemm).
-
I don't know, Sprig is kind of risqué at times too.
-
I am nothing if not a flirt. OK, I changed my mind. Since the next staff pick is due on Halloween, I"m a) moving up the date to Wed, the 29th, so I can b) have a thematic topic: Horror Flicks (yes, I know we just did movies, but still). It's just kind of appropriate. I'll have it up for posting on Halloween, which moves us out of the regular schedule, but I'm unconventional like that.
-
What about thrillers, like Alfred Hitchock's movies?
-
What about movies we've never seen? Like "They Might Be Giants"?
-
Ok, I'll expand it to "scary movie" so it includes thrillers and horror. Please don't expand that to include stuff that makes you fear for the cultural status of America's children like The Power Rangers Movie. Just stuff that was intended to be scary for it's target demographic.
And no, you have to have seen the movie. And TMBG isn't a scary movie anyway. It's a comedy. And you should watch it you uncultured plebian.
-
:P I just heard about it tuesday from my old math teacher. So bugger off. :P
-
Swine. You didn't know where TMBG got their name from?
-
I did, just not from when it was and who was in it and what it was about. I knew it was an old movie.
-
You know, I was thinking that every once in a while we could do a not-so-serious staff picks, for a little bit of humor. Like what the name of the fifth TMNT should be. Or sci-fi/fantasy convention pick-up lines. Or something.
-
curious. Those are good suggestions.
BTW, your scary movie picks are due in two days.
-
I had forgotten all about it. Thanks for the reminder.
-
Would I be ridiculed for choosing The Nightmare Before Christmas? I know it's only scary to 3 year-olds, but it's my favorite Halloween movie.
-
No, no ridiculing. That would be an appropriate choice.
Just remember. 3 picks maximum, 55 words per pick maximum.
-
How could we ridicule you for picking a Tim Burton piece, MoD? I think it's a great choice.
-
Yeah - great flick!
-
Only because its the bestest movie evar. And because it works as a halloween and christmas video.
-
'Cause it's not scary. Which is supposed to be the theme.
But I'll recommend it. Because--IT'S REALLY COOL!
Saint, is that 55 words per review or for all 3?
And are you sticking to it this time?
-
per review. And I always stick to it. depsite, contradictory evidence from previous staff picks.
-
I just don't want to be the only one who follows the rules, and then my reviews look dinky and small next to everybody elses. Even yours.
-
I followed the rules. I think.
-
I didn't (65, 61 and 91 respectively). AND my submission was late.
I emailed it to pardol at saintehlers dot com, Saint, in case there is time to get it in.
-
yes, well, I'm slow on that. I knew there was something to do last night, but I didn't. Hopefully, I'll have it done in an hour or so (before Fell wakes up)
-
Well, I got it out. I was surprised by a couple of my own last minute choices, but I wanted to get ones that were truly spine-chilling. Fortunately I remembered a couple recommendations. I didn't think that Poltergeist was "R" though. My parents never would have let me watch it...
