Brandon Sanderson / Re: Hero of Ages Prologue
« on: September 02, 2008, 05:56:41 AM »
((As a side note: I know you can't be perfect, but PLEASE capitalize and run a spell check on your posts.  I'm not trying to be critical here, just it bothers a lot of people, especially me.  Thanks ;)))

Might be useful if your post was fully void of grammatical errors. :)

To the topic at hand:  In which thread, since "all theories have been discussed already", have you pondered who exactly is being created in the prologue?  My vote is for the embodiment of Ruin.

Obsidian being volcanically created, thus coming (one would assume) from the Ashmounts...  but weren't the Ashmounts created by TLR at some point?  We could theorize these Ashmounts held some sort of power, being made from such a ... powerful entity.  Who's to say shards of hardened volcanic-innards don't carry some transient power?

Brandon Sanderson / Re: SANDERSON THE NEXT DAN BROWN?
« on: September 01, 2008, 09:39:31 AM »
Completely legal, and seems to drive the point home nicely.  ;)

On topic, the only Brown book I somewhat enjoyed was Digital Fortress. Mostly every one of his book is the same recycled story, so no, Mr. Sanderson is not the next Dan Brown.

If that's your favorite then I'm glad I haven't touched anything else by him.  Digital Fortress, in my opinion, was light on intellectual writing (light as in having none) and heavy on childish gimmick.  I knew the answer to most of the mystery by the end of chapter three (others by the introduction of the character!).  I felt his characters were stock and badly written, hinting too strongly at all of the questions he'd hoped to keep until the final pages, and I also felt he failed quite muchly at making a believable world to surround these fine folks.  I believe the only interesting thing about this novel, aside from the fact it strayed far too much from what could or would actually happen, was that the whole of the national defense grid apparently can be eaten away like sperm eating an egg.  I mean... wasn't that actually part of the description?

Brandon Sanderson / erm.. Mistborn in CCG format?
« on: May 09, 2008, 06:04:07 AM »
So... just completely random... I was looking at the TWG forums and glossed over the CCG link and thought: Mistborn? or even, now that I think of it, Elantris?

With such delicate and intricate magical laws governing these two worlds, as well as Warbreaker's, has anyone considered (or has Brandon been approached concerning) a CCG on any of these properties?

I can see, potentially, TOR refusing on account of the failed WoT (by Precedence), but TOR wouldn't have anything to worry about other than some sort of reputation should it bomb.  While WoT was just a little too...'out there'..., we still have aGoT that follows along similar lines as L5R.  I don't see how Mistborn or Elantris could be structured even remotely similar to either, though with some words of wisdom from Brandon, a dedicated designer could easily take either property and make it unique and fun...

The person who wrote that email obviously has some much deeper problems than a book with an ending he/she didn't like.  I hope he never has to read The Lady and the Tiger.  Heaven forbit the author allows you to use your imagination.

I actually immediately thought of that when I read this originally, but it got lost somewhere.  It's an excellent example of exactly what this individual is complaining about, and really its a perfectly masterful story.  Props to the best English teacher I've ever had for introducing it to me.

I remember reading that in jr. high.  I had an assignment to decide the outcome, write it, and explain why I chose it.  That was one of the most annoying assignments I have ever had to complete.

Might I inquire (was written as enquire at one point, don't see it used in such form too often) if kandra are to be capitalized or not?  As Terrisman always seems to be, yet skaa aren't, I wondered...  Will nitpick more later..  ;D

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Mistborn reactions - SPOILERS
« on: July 31, 2006, 10:17:57 PM »
I just finished as well.  I, too, had considered the Lord Ruler fella to be a Terrisman, but not necessarily the one it ended up being, and only then once we saw he was sitting in that hidden room...

Most of the characters were absolutely beautiful to read.  I wasn't as entertained by Kelsier was I was with the rest of the crew, however.

Honestly the biggest secret I half-expected was Marsh being alive, but that was "soothed" so-to-speak by the note.  Although, Kelsier dying was pretty easily read in chapters previous, but I had expected him to put up at least a fight.

Well anyway, I loved it dearly an eagerly anticipate watching the new Hero of Ages defeating the Darkness.   ;D

Is there a chance you would let us know what metal Vin was forced to burn that removed all of her current metal reserves?

Books / Re: What not to read
« on: July 30, 2006, 03:24:27 AM »
The Assassins of Tamurin by S.D. Tower... seriously... don't.  The premise was good enough, but the actual storytelling was rather pathetic in my opinion.  It dragged where it should have been quicker, it went too fast where it should have been slow, had no emotion, and was poorly realized as a whole.

Also, those who said don't read Dan Brown, I wholeheartedly agree.
