I'm just glad it's been given to us as a sneak peek.

If the system of showing the gist and central character of the chapter holds true it'll be a boon to me in indexing and finding scenes and quotations (something I struggle with in WoT, even with chapter icons, because the icons are imprecise).
I feel that a system of this nature is essential to an epic more than five or six books in length (although Mistborn's quotations effectively helped me mentally index the three book span) as mental prompts.

I kind of lurk too...I generally lurk for between 2 months and 3 years before people even realize I'm there (well...that's a habit I picked up AFTER my first foray into the world of fan communities).

I would be willing to not lurk if people constructively speculate.

Brandon Sanderson is the my only reason that I EVER curse having turned up my nose at a job offer in SLC.
I honestly would have hated that job...and it paid reasonably but not any better than other prospects.

I think that we'll learn more about the nature of being a Returned descendant in the second novel.

Vasher implies that Vivenna could do more than just change her hair but I'm not even sure that he knows what she's capable of (she just never thought about it, I'm sure...and it's in his nature to think about such things, being who he is).

I trust it because it's Sanderson...I simply never have any idea what world and situation he's going to catapult our observational powers into next.

So essentially...Lightsong has been trying to do the same thing Vasher is doing for his entire Returned existence?

Well, if you read closely, Lightsong wasn't all that committed to not being a god.  The perks were quite nice, and he got to exercise his razor wit.

Plus having his high priest constantly reminding him that he's a god and arguing the matter with him would probably suffice to keep it from ever becoming remotely likely that he'd completely convince himself and accidentally stumble upon the trick.

Stardust...the movie was a bit different from the book in ways you can readily see (the movie seems...simplified is a good word for it).

A lot of my friends have told me that the text-only novel read strangely because the original format is illustrated and that's how it is actually meant to be consumed.

That aside...I never really envisioned Elend looking like the cover art...but it's ok.
In all honesty, I kind of wish we'd gotten more than one proper illustration of non-Vin characters!

LMAO

I think all the Hoids are aspects of one...either that or evidence that these are all parallel worlds and some elements remain the same in their evolution (certain people will exist and, without the meddling of Shards, have certain talents - Hoid is obviously very well-spoken and good at maintaining an act).

Yeah I kinda doubt that "Jaddeth" is a shard, otherwise why would the Dakhor monks use the Dor? Also isn't Jaddeth just a different name for the god that Sarene and Raoden believe in?

That was never really said - actually, something was even said that CONTRADICTS that.

While the religions originally split from a mother faith, worship of Jaddeth took over the seat of main deity in one branch at some unspecified point in time.  Jaddeth was an older deity from an older but less powerful "pagan" religion - when they looked back at the really old "heretical" original of the great holy work about Wyrn, Jaddeth was a really minor deity of earth or underground.

Au contraire.  Sazed said there was something very deep and fundamental about the number sixteen, something that related to the way the universe itself worked.  He said that Preservation used 16 because it was so fundamental to the way the world worked, Ruin couldn't counter it.  He said, in fact, that he didn't fully understand all the implications of 16, even with his expanded intellect.  Thus I feel that my statement is a solid speculation firmly based on canon.  If you wish a citation for this reference, I will  have to get it later.  It was one of the bumps after the Allomancy/Mist connection had been found.

As for Sazed absorbing two of them:  That doesn't change the number of powers, just the number of personalities controlling the powers.  I still suspect that there are sixteen powers, or shards.  If they are being recombined, then good for them.  They were, after all, apparently one once.
I'll bow down to you on this one. I only took note of the fact that Sazed said Preservation used the number 16 to let the people know he was doing something and apparently ignored/forgot the rest.

As to the 5 or 6 shards thing, I'm fairly certain BS said that we had encountered 4 other shards beyond Ruin and Preservation.   I don't think he indicated how many there were total.

I recall the same being said SK...
As for the "shards" we've dealt with on some level...at least the ones I suspect!
Dor
Jaddeth
Auster

then obviously I've forgotten someone

Agreed - like LotR at first...and then later he kind of goes Dune on us (but that only lasts a little while too...and no Duncan Idaho).

Part of the increasingly slow pace IS the divergent plots, agreed (we start out with one group...it splits into two...then into three...then...well, eventually SOME of the big secondary characters disappear for books at a time and we have no idea what they're doing.  One notable example is still offstage and we've been given 99% certainty that "RAFO" means "yes, that character will be in book 12...and alive...and VERY IMPORTANT"

Another part of it has to do with RJ's compulsive need to describe where the tea came from, what exactly the collar pin looks like and the intimate details of the relevant family and the contents of EVERY ROOM at a detail level that makes you think we're on Antiques Roadshow "The Westlands" edition.

Hmm, what could a Ferucamist with aluminum/duralumin do? I thinking maybe duralumin could flare a metal charged by a ferucamist, and the duralumin burn could agument the total energy released, but aluminum seems to just make metals vanish w/o any benefits to the user.

That wouldn't work with feruchemy.  Feruchemy invovles storing and releasing, what would you be storing for those powers, just because a few metals (pewter and tin) do similar things, that doesn't mean the other effects have to be even remotely similar.  If you look, the effects you have guessed really wouldn't work with feruchemy at all.
I'm still wondering about my inquisitor question by the way.
Oh, and I think I've guessed the shards as well.  One, I think is the Dor, whose physical body was shaped into Elantris, and the other is some sort of rest spirit, the blue lake is it's physical body.

I agree on Dor at least - I believe that Dor manifests through the physical area.

Then I took JADDETH (the Wyrn's god) to be another shard...originally revered as a "minor god" of things underground.  Obviously the Jaddeth worshippers don't see him in that light anymore.  However, I think we see manifestations that strongly imply that Jaddeth is a shard which runs counter to Dor and that Jaddeth and was trying to essentially kick Dor while it was already down.

For those wanting both books released at the same time: Bookstores have limited shelf space and would be much happier to be able to put one book out and sell it and then have space to put out the other book.

There are a lot of factors that go into bookselling that the customer doesn't tend to think about.

Meanwhile in Libraries (at least in my experience with five different ones in my area)...it's not uncommon to get 20-40 copies of a VERY popular new release simply because they'll all be servicing the massive held book backlogs for the first month or two after the release and then sell off the majority of them as used books after they start "cluttering the shelves".  It's what happened with one RJ novel when I worked in a library and what happened with Harry Potter when I worked in another.  The thicker the book, the more overdue fees we're looking at so the more likely the library is to actually PROFIT (and be able to turn around and buy more books when the next one comes out).

If we get a two volume release, it'll either have to be bundled or libraries will be the first place that you can actually find copies of volume two without a pre-order.
