Title: Oriental Adventures (D20)
Post by: Entsuropi on February 22, 2003, 12:51:54 PM
I got this on thursdays. Damn me, its a nice book. It has a cover and interior art and presentation superior to any other RPG book i have ever seen, including the big three (PHB/MM/DMG - i own all three. makes me happy, but not very rich). It is based around the setting of "Five Rings" which is quite an interesting setting, and i like the taint rules and the  oni spirits. In fact, i like all the spirits in this book. Gotta love the Doc Cu'o'c, a guy split in half (1 arm, i leg, half a face and torso etc) or what the Dokufu? I really like the dragons too. They are as powerful as the MM dragons, but much cooler (and wierder. very wierd indeed).

Oh, Spriggan : a question. What does "Hentei" mean in japanese? Its the name of the Imperial Royal Family Dynasty. Apparently it means "Anti Imperial", showing the five rings authors lack of japanese i suppose.

Yes, the Oriental Adventures book IS very cool.  There is another d20 book called Rokugan which is a supplement for OA.  I think each can be played seperately, but that they are supposed to supplement each other into a single all-encompassing world setting.

If you want even cooler samurai-type action, check out the original Legend of the Five Rings game.  Combat is deadly: a highly trained warrior can kill off truckloads of enemies, but can also die from a single stroke if he makes a foolish move.

I had a smegging good reply as to what "Hentai" actually means, but I ended up deleting it just in case some of us are fans of the genre.  For the record, I think is is awful.

are you sure it's spelled HENTAI and not HANTAI?  big difference.  Hentai means perverted.  though it has basicaly come to mean anime porn.  Hantai is to oppose.  I've got oriental adventures so give me the page number and I'll have a look.  even if it is Hentai there are usealy several meanings for each word (it depends on the chinese characters used to spell it).  As far as the Japanese in Oriental adventures, about 50% makes sence the other are either classical Japanese/folklore words or are I think Some guy at WotC that just threw words out not careing what they ment as long as how they sounded.

HAntEi actually. Page number 208, left column top paragraph heading : "Hantei, Shinsen and Fu Leng"

Oh and the setting of rokugan was created by somebody non WoTC. They bought the setting tho. D20 and all that.

The L5R rpg stemmed from a CCG that came out quite some time ago.  It managed to get a pretty good following (at least in areas I was in) thought it was passed through numerous publishers.  AEG eventually ended up with it, which is where it belongs.

AEG also published the L5R RPG which was written by one of my favorite authors, John Wick.  It was a fun game and had a ton of support through supplements.  I haven't checked out the d20 for it yet, and I doubt I ever will.

Long live the Crab Clan!

Well Hantei is complealy different.  Han being to oppose and Tei being a word for imperal.

It can do that in English, too, but we've given up trying to convince you of that :)
