I don't know, I was of the opinion that the metallic lake was the Well of Ascension.

I was going to post this same thing earlier, but I was afraid I was just going to be scoffed at.  I stand behind you, Chaos!

I thought Rashek ended up leading Alendi away from it.

Quote
The lake that Fedik discovered is below us now—I can see it
from the ledge. It looks even more eerie from up here, with its
glassy—almost metallic—sheen. I almost wish I had let him take a
sample of its waters.
Perhaps his interest was what angered the mist creature that
follows us. Perhaps . . . that was why it decided to attack him,
stabbing him with its invisible knife.
Strangely, the attack comforted me. At least I know that since
another has seen it. That means I’m not mad.
(Ch 33, pg 547)

As you can see here, the mist spirit attacked at the 'lake,' just as it had attacked Elend right at the well.  It could be coincidence.

*shrug* We'll find out in a little more then two weeks.

hey, in Allomancy, which metal is opposite of Steel? I think that could be the type of metal used as the spikes.

Iron.  But now I'm confused.

You could also look for description of things other than main characters.  I remember the koloss being physically described pretty vividly.

Oh yes!  Great idea.  Also, I guess the descriptions of Vin aren't the only ones in the book!  ;D  There are great descriptions of all the characters.  I personally couldn't stop reading about Kel after I read the prologue.  The smile hooked me.

Brandon's attendance at Dragon*con this year and his introduction to WoT fans there is going to explode his readership.  If I understand correctly, he also attended one or two other *cons this year and talked about WoT as well as his own writings.

Those of us at Dragon*con were completely bowled over by him.  He was approachable, willing to talk about anything, and seems to be almost as big a WoT geek as some of us are!!  He actually came down and played Are You a Darkfriend in the programming track room too!  (My friends, "Team Awesome" had great fun killing him off!)  He's truly a first class act.  ;D

I would have loved to be there haha.  I myself started reading Mistborn due to the fact that he was chosen to write AMoL (as were many of you, it seems).  It took me a while, mostly because I started to read WoT again after I heard the news of RJ, but, I am now fully confident that Brandon will do a remarkable job with AMoL.  After I finish the Mistborn series, I am going to start reading WoT once again in preparation for the end of the saga!

POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING!

Oh, how I love message boards!

I think there is more to the first chapter then meets the eye.  I really don't believe physical description is just plainly telling people what the character is wearing or what their skin/eyes/hair/eyes with laser canons look like.  I personally get a little bored when an author goes into a full page description of a characters outer appearance (*cough* The Wheel of Time *cough*--not that I didn't like all his descriptions...some of them were a bit overboard though.   Especially when you only see the character like three times in the series.)

Hope some of the stuff below is useful Danger.  If you want to use any of those passages, remember to use your own words to describe them. :p

I decided to take a bit of a break from working to bring you some of the things that I would refer to as being physical character description without bogging down the reader with a snowpeak of information:

(I am copying the text from Tor's PDF file, so they will appear in a similar fashion when I quote them.)

Quote
Vin didn’t let hatred or rebellion show in her eyes. She
simply looked down, giving Camon what he expected to see.
There were other ways to be strong. That lesson she had
learned on her own.
(Ch1, pg 21)

Sanderson essentially reveals her resigned stance in this passage.  She just looks down, but behind that blank look that she probably had, the 'hatred and rebellion' fought to escape.

Quote
Just another bruise. She was strong enough to deal with it.
She’d done so before.
(Ch1, pg 21)

Bruises--shes a tough girl, this Vin.  By simply stating 'she'd done so before' reveals that there are quite a lot of other bruises visible in her flesh.  He didn't need to tell you that her skin was in various shades of white, blue, and purple to get the point across.

Quote
She looked up at Camon, tasting
blood on her lip. She must have let some of her confidence
show, because he glanced at her out of the corner of his eye,
and his expression darkened.
(Ch1, pg 21...again)

The bleeding lip obviously here, but that bit mentioning Vin's confidence shows show much about her character without having to go into a great deal of detail on what she actually looked like exactly.  You know that the defiance is crawling out of her at this point, and I think you, as the reader can put the pieces together.

Here's the passage that Vegas referred to:
Quote
Theron eyed Vin, obviously noting her bloodied lip. She
glanced away. Theron’s eyes lingered on her, however, running
down the length of her body. She wore a simple white
buttoned shirt and a pair of overalls. Indeed, she was hardly
enticing; scrawny with a youthful face, she supposedly didn’t
even look her sixteen years. Some men preferred such
women, however.
(Ch1, pg 23)

This is obviously the most straight forward physical description of Vin.  Once again, the bloodied lip shows up again.  Sanderson does a job of making sure the reader knows that this is a very resilient character.  Within the first few pages you know that Vin is constantly suffering, but you can see how steadfast she is through some of these passages.  They all paint a picture of the character.

Quote
She kept to
the shadows, as usual;
(Ch2, pg 33)

The fact that she is hermit-like has influence on how you re-create the character in your mind.

Quote
Vin tried her best to remain invisible.
(Ch2, pg 34)

See the above comment...

Quote
Vin sighed, stretching slightly. She’d have more bruises. At
least they won’t be visible. Now that the bruises Camon had
given her face were finally gone, Sazed had warned her to be
careful. Makeup could only cover so much, and she would
have to look like a “proper” young noblewoman if she were
going to infiltrate the court.
(Ch 9, pg 174)

This is much further in the book, but it shows how Vin is changing.

Note to self: I just skimmed through some pages quickly and found these ones.  There is so much more then this.  Danger, those page numbers are where I found those quotes in the version I sent you as well.  Should be easy enough to find.

Have fun!

P.S. - Danger, when Vin meets Elend, I am sure there is some description of her from his point of view.  I know there are points where Kel just watches her as well, so I am sure you have tons of stuff to grab from.

Yeah; in the moment when Marsh seized control of his mind again (before losing it again in the end), his perceptions and viewpoints completely changed from delight to horror.

Indeed.  Imagine how horrific it would be if you were still in control of your thoughts but Ruin had full control of your body.  *Shivers*

Brisngr is amazingtastic so far!

My room mate finished it the day after it was released and he said he loved it.  I have never been able to get past the first book though, so, I'll just have to leave that one be for now.

There is one book that was recommended to me just yesterday that I am having trouble putting down: The Book Thief, by Markus Zusak.  I'm sure this book is mentioned somewhere in this thread, but I really don't have time to read it anymore.  So far, it has been great (50 pages in).  I'll try to keep you all up to date!

But just a quick generalized shameless plug: The story is narrated by Death and through the novel, he reveals the story about 'the book thief.'  Really cool things are going on here in regards to PoV so far.

I really don't hope its that easy; just use the power of the well and everything is back to normal. It seems like it would cheapen all the effort and sacrifice of the characters in previous books.

I really doubt it's going to be that easy.  Afterall, Vin already used the WoA and from the sounds of it, it seems that it doesn't re-fill all too quickly.  Besides, I am a big advocate that TLR did, at one point (or he always), have great intentions.  He just took a wrong turn or two.  I have a feeling TLR was essentially covering up a problem (Ruin) by doing something drastic (using the well to essentially screw the world).  Vin and the gang are going to have to aim much further then TLR did.

That's just my opinion, though.

Very good discussion, everyone. Sorry I couldn't take part in it, but I've been terribly busy.

T-18 days, anybody?

I know this has been discussed in the HoA thread, but let's get something going here: Who do you think the Hero of Ages is?

The problem is that it's going to be very difficulty taking stabs at this one since all the things we know about the HoA could be tinkered with.  Gotta love Ruin.

This has been established. It's Chaos2651. :).

Oh yeah, that's right.

There is one thing I would like to say...I don't believe it's Vin.  I believe she will be very central in fighting Ruin, but I'm not 100% convinced that she is actually the HoA.

Here's a thought, since that HOA was supposedly intended to wield the power of the WOA, the idea of an HOA arising in the same sense can no longer be....

And since we know there still must be an HOA (as insinuated from the title of book three) we should ask ourselves HOW will the next HOA arise?

Hey, things are so broken up right now it could be that no single hero arises--Vin and Elend could team up and defeat the Ruin...

Everything is possible.

Holy quotage Batman!  There is a troublesome thing in the 'HoA' ascension through the WoA thing, though.  What if Ruin had made that part up to release himself?  Kwaan was pretty adamant about the fact that the Hero shouldn't give away the power (woops on Vin's part) but I think you're right elmandr, there must be something else.

Unless the HoA was TLR.  That could be a possibility as well.  The description of the book says that Elend and Vin go off looking for clues from TLR on how to defeat Ruin:  (aha found it)

Quote
Emperor Elend Venture hopes to find clues left behind by the Lord Ruler that will allow him to save the world.
(as per Amazon,  :P)

And I know there is more to TLR's last few lines.  He was truly afraid of dieing but it seemed like he was concerned about more then his own life.

Haha :p Well, I just thought Zane was annoying throughout all of Book 2, that's why I didn't care for him.

The bloodletting relates to the link between Hemalurgy and blood, the link that is there, but not quite clear. I'm fairly certain the size and the amount of spikes has a great deal to do with Ruin's hold as well.

But, Ruin doesn't fully control Marsh's mind. He wants to kill himself, he doesn't want to do what Ruin wants. It's a start to resistance :P

Perhaps then Ruin doesn't control the mind...Perhaps just the body...
In that prologue though, right at the end...
Quote
That was why it was so much fun. Marsh picked up a mallet and began to pound.

Sounds to me like it does change your state of mind since it seems Marsh started to enjoy it when Ruin took over.

The thoughts are considered characterization.

Yeah, I stated as much, however my post was in reference to the OPs request for 'particularly in physical appearance'.

Good call.  I need some sleep before I start posting things on these forums.  Oof.  That or some pewter burning.

Anyone figured out how to get the magic alomancer pill yet?

If the theory holds, I'm curious what degre of damage he would need to take, it seems like he took plenty from Sazed and Ham at the end of book 2....

Yeah.  It sounds like Zane busted his arms up pretty good as well.  The thing is, I think if the inquisitor isn't burning pewter (or whatever else they might be doing with those pins through their body), they would probably be just like a human.  The question is: is he going to be able to stop Ruin from forcing him to burn pewter?

I like it. Given a moment of clarity he may decide to kill himself. It might fit with what I posted last. The thing is. . .  What would you use to cause that kind of injury to Marsh? I would have to be powerful.

That's where Vin comes in!

Brandon Sanderson / Re: For theorizing purposes...

Atium's rare enough as it is. Somehow I have to doubt someone made a dagger out of it. Besides, someone would have to die for him to not die when the spike was stabbed into him. That sort of thing doesn't happen casually. Hemalurgy is done on purpose, not accident.

Also, Atium comes only in beads. Beads in special geodes.

And finally, he didn't work in the Pits. The scars on his arm that made Vin think that he had worked in the Pits were from him cutting himself to lessen the voice in his head.

I'm not ruling out the idea of the spike being Atium, I just don't think it's likely; that would take a lot of Atium.

Oh, I was just throwing out random ideas haha.  I completely understand that a atium spike/dagger would take quite a lot of atium, but like others have mentioned, he seems to be able to burn it for quite a long while.  I understand that he has a stockpile, but atium burns out quickly, so even a stock pile would run out rather quickly.

Also with the Pits, good call.  I could swear that his father had mentioned it at some point, though.  It's been a while since I read it, so I there is a high chance I completely missed the target.  :)

Quote
I don't know where I read it, but EOUL mentioned something about Zane Soothing her almost constantly, it is just never mentioned.

You read that in one of the latest annotations.  However, I don't think hes got anything magically special in regards to steel pushing or soothing--Zane is just a very subtle character and his powers follow suit.

There's good news and bad news.

The good news is that there are plenty of locations you can get hold of Brandon's books even if you lent yours out (library, bookstore, etc. as well as Mistborn 1 floating around in PDF form which might be downloaded directly from TOR).

The bad news is that he doesn't go into great detail of the characters appearance, but instead delves into their thoughts and feelings while they experience the plot.

Physical descriptions are mentioned in passing fashion compared to other books, but this allows the reader to fill in the gaps. Your best desription might be of Elend once he begins wearing his white suit. I believe it talks about buttons, a cape, medals, a crown and his hair.

The thoughts are considered characterization.  That first chapter where Vin is in her little hiding place has some of the most excellent characterization I have read.  Even the voice of her brother whispering to her can be considered her own characterization since those words molded her character so much.

Danger, if you would like me to email you a PDF version of MB1, I'd be more then happy to.  Toss me a PM with your email.  Or you can just go look on the website like Darxbane mentioned.
