I would like to post official notice that I will only be visiting a few select threads until I get my copy of MB3. So if I randomly stop replying, that's why.

I would also like to post official notice that I hate anyone who already has MB3. For the time being.

I would also like to point out that there are 3 days left. I'm trying very hard to not press the caps-lock key and express my excitement very loudly. I hope you are all proud of my self-discipline.

/nod.  I think this is the last time I am visiting the forums until I'm done with MB3.  I'm finishing WoA again tonight.

Good job elmandr1. You must be a speed reader to finish the rest of the book in 20 minutes.

Caught red handed.  It sort-of angers me that HoA got out early....

I agree with you on which Reen voices are important.  The ones you didn't select area all lessons that Reen tought to Vin that she is remembering, these are what she thinks Reen would say to her now, or what the voice of Reen is saying to her now.  Laid out like that the difference is quit obvious.
The voice seems stronger after she meets Kelsier, is this important?
The Chapter 30 one felt so real that she could feel him beside her.
I also find the mistrust thing interesting.

Or perhaps the voices were part of Ruin's little charade.  I don't necessarily believe this, by the way--I do think it's a def. possibility though.

I don't think they will be moot. The next new book is a ways off and we'll need the humor to tide us over. Plus, it may prove useful to Brandon, knowing what things threw us off, which ones were easy to figure out, etc. so that his next series of books are that much better.

Agreed.  Not much else to say.  ;D

Brandon Sanderson / Re: The 13th and 14th metals?
« on: October 10, 2008, 12:48:58 AM »
*Raises hand*

I has a theory.  So this kinda goes back to the mist being one of the metals.  What if the Chromium was in the mist which hinders everyone's powers and that's why not everyone can burn metals and burning Nichromel gives you the power to burn metal.  This would explain why Elend could burn it even though he wasn't an Allomancer.  This would make them opposites, fit them into the chart.

Also the burning the mists could have been directing the power of the Chromium against TLR making him weaker, not Vin stronger.  So you get rid of the mist and everyone can burn metals, but those with Nichromel can burn better and stronger.

Th. Nichromel would be passed through blood, showing how it's inherited, it could be similar to a chromium deficiency only difference being it'd be backwards and with Nichromel.

Would this mean that before the Ascension, everybody was capable of Allomancy?

That would be the mother of all twists.  It would be really cool, actually.  Unfortunately, I think that something as basic as that would have survived in skaa tradition. and that Alendi would have compared Feruchemy to Allomancy even if Allomancy was universal (e.g. he would have said that the Terrismen became stronger than even a man flaring pewter.)

Yeah, I think something like that would have survived for at least a thousand years.  Quite a theory though.  A couple days and we'll see. :)

What if, with Ruin making more inquisitors, Preservation is trying to make more Mistborn? Those too old can't take the strain required to Snap and die, those untouched don't have the blood in them, and those who are attacked but then released have Snapped, but like Vin, they're not aware of it because they don't know anything about Allomancy. Vin had to have Kelsier tell her she was Mistborn, otherwise she never would have considered the idea.
Holy lord.  That would be crazy and it's an interesting theory.  I wonder, is there any place in those chapters with Sazed that this could be foreshadowed a bit?  I actually started WoA again the other day and I'm right at that part.  So, when I go through reading it tonight, I'll make sure to keep an eye on that.  That's the thing with Mistborn, if you hadn't ingested metals, you would never know.  I know you take in a little bit through water/food/dirt(:p) and such but...it's obvious that Vin just thought her 'luck' was coincidence.

The one thing I don't like about this theory is the plausibility.  It takes a while to train a Mistborn (or a Misting for that matter).  We only have this one book; I highly doubt Vin and the gang would have the time to spare to train new Mistborn/Mistings besides Elend, who seems somewhat proficient at this point anyways.  I would make a comparison to The Wheel of Time to further explain this, but I don't feel like spoiling anything for anyone.

As for topics, pass.   :D

I personally give the prophecies about 500 years. But the doesn't really matter.

And I also suppose it's entirely possible that there are previous heroes of ages. I just think that it is likely that some sort of legend of them would have been passed on to today. But again, it is possible.

And I'm not sure about whether the power at the well is the deciding factor in what makes a Hero of Ages.

I highly doubt the Terris prophecies are only 500 years old for a single reason: it would throw every single thing Kwaan has written on metal off.  It had been a thousand years since the time of Alendi and I was under the impression that the prophecies are what first led Kwaan to assume he was the HoA.

Maybe it's just me.
It just occurred to me; what if the world should have ended thousands of years ago, and (like in Alcatraz) has been arriving late to it's own death through the Heroes of Ages?

I really like this idea.  Def. a possibility.

Now we see why the Inquisitors took the Terris Keepers.  That Inquisitor used a combination of Pewter and Feruchemical speed.  Obviously, he didn't have a lot stored, or he would probably have stayed super fast long enough to ram the spike into Elend.  This also lays credence that Hemalurgy gives abilities of the one sacrificed.  This is how they got their Allomancy, and now they are getting Feruchemy as well.  The Inq's aren't playing around now, that's for sure.  Theory time:  Why would the Inq want to ram a spike into Elend instead of just killing him another way?  Me thinks he was trying to impale him with a spike that would allow Ruin to take over his mind.  Yet another thing to worry about.

I don't think Elend being stronger than Vin makes her less of a character.  Raw strength isn't everything.  I bet she still whoops him when they spar.

Wow, that is an interesting theory.  They, like you said, could also get stronger the more people they sacrifice...that's actually really freaking frightening.  "Hemalurgy was a messy art."

When Vin ripped off its robe and the steel plate was covering the spike, I literally had chills ripping my body into pieces.  I could see that smirk that was on the inquisitors face.

-raises hand-

I totally called Elend being stronger than Vin!

Allomantically, sure.  Skills, not really.  Also, you have to remember that Vin is able to pull in the mists, and it's also possible that she's got Hemalurgy.  He did seem so lord ruler-ey ( ;D that's right, I went there) with his powers.  Him and Vin are def. gonna make one crazy baby.  :o

I don't know... I think that the metal lake is referring to the Well of Ascension.

Okay, so... T-16 days. Go!

Let's ride the new chapter: In what ways do you think Hemalurgy is fused with Alomancy?

Wow, having just read the third chapter of HoA, I think I'd rather just bring that whole chapter and say, "So, uh, this really doesn't fit the assignment, but, dang, you've gotta read this!"

Lol, the second I read the description of the Koloss, I thought of this thread.  SO COOL!

Holy crap. Wow! I never stop saying "wow" with these sample chapters. Yeah, I will love this book.

Honestly, when Vin appeared... I was laughing like a giddy schoolboy it was so awesome.

And then an Inquisitor battle? Heck yes!

...

Phew...

I'm pumped.

There are so many interestingly awesome things in this. Let's see, where to begin?

Firstly, Rashek is the guy who is writing the epigraphs. Talking about anyone else at this point seems... silly.

Okay, Elend is awesome. Vin with Elend? Even better! Obviously, Elend's Allomancy is incredibly powerful because its "pure" Allomancy from the 15th metal. Vin actually compares his duralumin + zinc strength with the Lord Ruler's power. Now that's saying something!

I would assume that the thing that is controlling the koloss was Ruin, more or less than we already anticipated. He's certainly controlling lots of them, that's for sure.

As for the super-speed... I have no idea. Whether it's Feruchemy or Hemalurgy makes a big difference there. I'm gonna vote Hemalurgy on that one.

"The first of those armies I promised you."  ...So awesome.

Actually, I don't think Ruin controlled those Koloss.  It may have controlled the inquisitor who controlled said Koloss, though.  When the inquisitor died, Elend was finally able to take control of them all--so I'd assume that was it--especially since Vin mentioned that forcing control over some of the Koloss was just a way to make the Inquis reveal itself.

Hemalurgy...I really wonder whats behind all of this.  That flash of speed was crazy sick on the inquisitors part.  Oh man.

And Elend's alomancy...oof so freaking good!  I CAN'T WAIT!!!

It's nearly two weeks!!!  raar

I agree somewhat with those who consider the Well to be the Metal Lake.  If not:

There's supposed to be two.  Alendi/Rashek.  Vin/Elend (though I suspect it was supposed to be Vin/Sazed).   The "Hero" and the... well... opposite.  One to take the power, one to suffer a massive wound so the person taking the power would use it rather than release it.

'Gods' on earth.  Ruin/Preservation as embodied by those who take the power.  "The Hero of Ages"?   His initial title was 'the final hero'?  What massive havoc that would cause.  What epic 'end of the world' showdown between the two ultimates?

*shrug*  So... again... someone did wrong.  Last time Rashek killed his opposite and this time Vin let the power go.

Let's wait a thousand years for the well to refill to find out what happens in the next epic chapter!

I kid.  ;)

That's an interesting theory on two heroes, Neina.  Very interesting indeed.  Again, there's also the question if either Alendi or Rashek were the real heroes, but they just failed.

So, uh, it may help that I clarify that this isn't any sort of paper I have to write, or even a graded assignment. On monday in class we will be learning about characterization, and I simply volunteered to bring an example of good characterization for the class to hear. So, even if we did call this cheating, would it even be unethical, since it has nothing to do with my grade?
Essentially, I'm just asking for your help in providing my class with a good example of characterization.
:p

It wouldn't matter either way hehe.  I hope the class enjoys the quotes Danger!

hey, in Allomancy, which metal is opposite of Steel? I think that could be the type of metal used as the spikes.

Iron.  But now I'm confused.

I have my reasons for believing it isn't steel, one is that Kwaan states that nothing can be trusted but steel--Unless Kwaan Betrays Alendi for other reasons untold to us--then that would make that statement questionable, and thus everything we think we know about the prophecy is yet again tossed out the window--so we can only assume that everything we know to be true.

So Steel = Trust, and Ruin resistent (lol)

So How could the Steel Inquistors be controlled by Ruin? Contradicting isn't it...?

We can only assume that the term steel for a steel inquistor must be a product of arrogance--in the same sense that native americans are called Indians...

So if it isn't steel, what is it?

My guess would be iron--opposite of Steel. (thank you Wielder, as i was to lazy to look for myself.)

Then again, The spikes could be Steel, but the plates covering them, they could be iron.

Either way, based on what books one and two have revealed, Steel can't be the means by which Ruin takes hold of the Inquistors.

Hum, that never really crossed my mind.  I do wonder though, if we are taking Kwaan's words too literally.  Perhaps he didn't mean steel--just metal in general.  But that is an interesting idea.  I say we start stabbing characters with iron spikes to find out.  Come on!  Lets go!

And I just lent WOA to a friend... Can't look it up now... Where was the lake located? Was it on that metal map, or just the circled city?

EDIT: Circled city theories, anyone?

It was Satlin city, if my memory serves me correct.  I highly doubt that there is just some simple collection of atium beads or stored food there, to be quite honest.  There has to be something more.  More steel plates perhaps with a shred of the truth?

Does anybody else here feel weird about helping Dangerbutton "cheat"? Whether he's cheating intentionally or not, we are doing his homework for him when we give him the passages and tell him how it is characterization. I'm not accusing anyone of helping him/her cheat intentionally; I'm just surprised that people actually responded to this.

I would not consider this cheating at all.  Hes going to use his own words to describe any of the passages I pointed out anyways.  Have you ever bought a pre-owned book at the university and all the most important passages were already highlighted for you?  I'm essentially tossing him my copy of Mistborn so he can read through it.  The things I wrote explaining why I think the passage can be considered characterization was more more two other posters, not for Danger (though, you are welcome to read through them if you are confused, Danger).

Correct me if I'm wrong.
