3.  A compass would work, but remember that the Final Empire is set at the north pole of Scadrial, but not necessarily at the magnetic north pole.  These things are complicated, but just assume that it works the same way it would here on Earth.

Hold on there.

If say, Luthadel, is at the north pole (and not necessarily the magnetic one, so they're on top of the axis the planet is turning around) *and* there are seasons on said planet (meaning that the planets axis isn't completely perpendicular to the imaginary line from planet to sun), doesn't that mean that they'll have very long days in summer and very long nights in winter?

Having said that, this would allow for interesting options on how the people on the south pole did survive.

In fact, that's similar to the way things work around here on our little earth. However, a thing as days with 22 hours of sunlight in the summer but 2 hours of sunlight in the winter seems like something that would've been mentioned, so I'm probably wrong here. Thus, either a) there is an inconsistency in the Mistborn world, b) Brandon just never mentioned this in his books or c) the seasons are caused by something other than the non-perpendicularity mentioned above.

c) would be interesting. Maybe the planet goes around the sun in an egg-shape (would make winter longer than summer I guess)? Maybe the sun is hotter on one side?

P.S. I just used the word (?) non-perpendicularity. Please bow before me in awe.

I have a feeling that Rashek spun the world or took care of this somehow to put Luthadel in a much safer position--so, after he changed the world, Luthadel, or the WoA, weren't magnetic north.

That's just my guess.

Sorry if this has already been answered Brandon, I'm still working on getting caught up with the forums, I've been busy, sick, and dealing with identity theft! :o

But could you give us a short guide on how Spooks dialect is spoken?

I would actually love to see this as well.  I think there have been a few sort-of explanations in other threads, but I'd love to see something a bit more detailed.

It would be so much fun to talk in the Spook's street slang with my friends.
That was my thought as well. ha ha. Everyone would be clueless!

And the fun begins!  ;D

Rather, what I repeatedly found myself thinking was, "Wow, that was smart. The way those pieces fit together was very clever." To me, it speaks of great world building and superb character building. Most things were internally consistent. For smaller stories, that's not such a hard thing to accomplish, but for three long books, with so many details, it says a lot about the planning and/or editing and revising.

'Planning' as in really detailed outlines. This is true with anything you write, from term papers to book reports, but is so much more important with stories that expand through multiple novels.

It takes practice to write good outlines. And while some writers can just sit down and write a story off the top of their head (not many can do this successfully), writing a good outline takes work, but doing that makes putting down the story later so much easier (and, surprisingly, faster).

Indeed.  That's one of the things I see in Mistborn--it was planned out quite well.  Most of (if not all) the open doors have been sealed shut.  One way that Brandon lucked out, though, is the fact that he pretty much wrote all three books at once, so there was still a bit more flexibility.

Amazing, nonetheless.

Yes!  I can't wait.  I enjoyed both versions 4 and 5.  Haven't had quite enough time to go through 6.  I think I'll just wait for the hardcover now.  ;D

Now I have more time to finish WoT before AMOL is out!

Does the plutonium misting create nuclear explosions?     Or just glow in the dark?    ;D

Or die.

 :P

Or, do you?  Remember, 'there's always another secret.'

You guys try too hard.  My books are literally all stacked up in my closet randomly on some larger shelves.  I know where they all are.  It's great.

It would take someone else a good twenty minutes to find anything, though.  Like literally; fantasy, classics, mythological, contemporary, sci-fi, writing, linguistics, etc...are all just mixed up together.  Let's call it ordered chaos.

On a similar, yet, unrelated note--you all should see my writing notes.  If I died halfway through writing the series I am planning, there would be no one who would be able to put the rest of the story together.  Nothing is in order and most of it is just random note after random note.

Here, let me grab one.

On a sticky note that was attached to some prose that had nothing to do with the note: "Dagger doesn't really hold hidden powers...it's just a piece of the puzzle you need on the road to TDP.  The enchantment may work now...think."

Or this:
"On Atrius:
 'I should feel guilty.'
He didn't.
____________
9/26/08
The Beowulf monty python thing...."(I can't reveal the rest of this :P)

It's going to be hell when I actually have to put this all together!  Woo!

Duuuuude.  If there was such a thing as linguistic acrobatics, i can imagine that as a primary example. Either that, or on the blooper reel for the sport...i can't real tell yet.

Reminds me of the Metal art--where the "Artists" put together a pile of mashed up or smoothed up slabs and chunks of I'm sitting there thinking, "Is there a specific order to all this? Was this intentional? Perhaps he knew that the pompous rich folk wouldn't dare call it crap, fearing that others might understand it and they will be seen as less than competent. So they sit there admiring in full focus. Making his random, artless piece, into an "abstract" art...

Did I just get compared to a bad artist?

No, a talentless yet clever artist. :P

...

You would have to see my writing before you come to that conclusion.  Personally, I like to think I'm talented.  ::)

I'm not sure.....but, just for  my part, I don't think a college student's bookshelf is anything like metal art. Yours actually sounded pretty organized, just eclectic. Nothing wrong with that at all. :)

Ha-ha!  Whats more--when I actually looked at it this last weekend, it was actually a little more organized then I had previously thought.  Take that bookshelf!

No way. He'd have to have a full beard, give him fangs, blacken the whites in his eyes, major plastic surgery to change his nose, grow his hair out long, and then flip the color scheme of the photo to negative...

Yeah, I'm not seeing it at all.

I say we all chip in some money for this.  Great ideas.  :P

P.S. How the heck is everyone changing their forum names?

I think it is pretty clear that the Mist Spirit died before Vin even came to the power. So, while she did end up replacing him for a time, she absolutely did not unite or whatnot.

It would be akin to saying because Elend replaced the Lord Ruler as ruler of the Final Empire he "united" with the man.
He's Guilty!

Agreed.

JUDGMENT!  I remember reading about you eating your hat right after you posted it Elmandr--and you're doing it.  She definitely did NOT merge with the mist spirit due to the fact that the mist spirit had died.  If she had merged with the mist spirit, both the old consciousness behind preservation and Vin would have had to been controlling the power of preservation at once.

They weren't.  [/Judgment]

Guilty on one count.

Punishment: Hat eating time.

Preferable form of proof is Youtube.

I don't remember who it was, but someone was dead set on Reen's voice not being Ruin, to the point of where they didn't even want it discussed.  I was pretty sure it was Ruin.  :)

I was discussing this with a friend.  He didn't believe me.  I just gave him the HoA on Sunday, so I can't wait until he gets to that part so I can say "hah, told ya."  He also refused to believe me when I said I thought the HoA was Sazed.

Meh.
