I just realized that the Gibbs left of the Pink Panther, that's on my list too see, and I know I'll like it more then I did Kong.

As much as I love Steve Martin, the buzz on "Pink Panther" is so bad I expect it to be among the worst films of the year. There's a reason it was yanked for prime season to the middle of nowhere (February, I believe): That usaully indicates that the studio smells disaster.

Of course, as I mentioned before, I love Martin, so it may turn out okay. I'll probably see it.  But I really consider "Pink Panther" a stale  2005 left over, so i didn't think it belonged on the list.

I, on the other hand, am highly afraid of Superman Returns. It could be good, and I want to love it, but...I just can't shake the feeling that it's going to disappoint. Call me a pessimist.

I completely understand your trepidation. I'm getting over my worries mostly due to my faith in Bryan Singer's track record with making Super hero films and casting them with unknowns, and the kwoledge that they are using the John Williams theme. Yes, it could be a disappointment. But it's still the movie I'm most looking forward to.

He wins in my book

Yeah, the blurb is My opinion, and I don't claim it to represent anyone else's. FF was definitely the worst, and most disappointing movie I saw last year. But then, I saw like, 6 movies last year.

Totally understood. All that matter is that we share the same enthusiasm for "Superman Returns". I could not be more excited.

We actually didn't think "Fantastic Four" was that bad. Just kind of so-so dumb fun. Had we written the headline it would have read "Aeon Flux" notwithstanding. That movie is a cancerous polyp on the ^%*#! of humanity.

PErsonally, if I were narrowing it down to just one, it would be a toss-up between "Superman Returns" and "Flags of Fathers", with the man of steel likely winning.

This is yet another movie that will recieve critical praise yet, will only be seen by a few. Then it will go on to be required viewing by jaded professors who are offended that people are offended by this film.

Actually, it has performed very well at the box office thus far, grossing over $22 million (impressive when you consider it's low budget and still somewhat limited release),, and with the Oscar momentum rising, the film's grosses rise. Sure, it's never goign to a "Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire", but when the dust settles and the awards have all been handed out, a lot of people will have seen "Brokeback Mountain".

People have the right to see, not see, be offended by, or not offended by, anything  they choose. This is America. If you don't want to see the film, don't. The review on the site makes it quite clear this film is not for everyone and does not encourage everyone to see it. Personally, howver, I would imagine people will be more damaged or badly influenced by films like "Hostel"  (which I wouldn't see even if I were getting paid to write reviews) than by this one.

I'm not sure what I think about this movie.

When I saw Rent on opening day there was a trailer for this movie, and the entire audience started making disgusted noises and actually booed.  I would think that the target audiences would be about the same--so if that audience seemed upset about it and made fun of it during the next three trailers, I think maybe someone messed up.

Well,  it has one almost every single Best Picture award so far, so that evens things out a bit.

I see this being a problem for a lot of guys. I was thinking of selling T-shirts for that say "I'm not gay, I just like art films."

Incidentally, if you look closely "Mirrormask" made Patrick's runners-up list.

You'd be surprised. Popular movies that BYU students can't really see anywhere else is their bread and butter.

I just know there are some films where sex is crucial to the plot that they don't do ("Liar Liar") is an example. I would expect Cleanflicks to havea rpblem with the sunject matter no matter what was cut. Espcially now that this film has become such a hot button issue in Utah.

From the things I've heard, I kind of want to see this movie. However, I avoid Rs with sexual content/nudity, which definitely rules this out. I wonder if it would lose much coming from Cleanflicks.

Somehow I don't see a cleanflicks version of this one happening.

Who has seen Mirrormask? I am in an outrage! Have you not reviewed it yet? You must tell us all about it!

Also what about Munich? I saw that film last week and it was really good. I think someone needs to reamend their lists, ahem?

"Munich" finished first on both of our lists. Patrick has seen "Mirrormask", but I have not.

This was, for me, one of the most difficult films to review I have yet ebncountered. While somewhat emotionally empty, I felt that was thematically germane to the lives the Geisha's lead. Visually, this film is pure poetry. I have never seen a more gorgeous film in my life. The story also engulfs the viwer, wrapping us up in it's world.

I fluctuated wildly on my star/clock rating for this one, and will never be entirely happy. But this much is certain: while I did not feel as much for the characters ad I hopes, I was mesmerized for the the entire length of the film. But it certianly was not as rewarding a cinematic experience as "Munich" or "King Kong".

And hey, most of all, let's remember, it's all about opinion.

Kudos to the Directors Guild of America for giving Spielberg a well-deserved award nomination for this film (I'm also glad to see them recognize George Clooney and Paul Haggis for their films).

I didn't see Phantom until January 2005.

And again, remember I only saw 12 movies in the theater this year so pretty much all of them made my list since I only see movies I think I'll like.

Makes sense. I was tempted to include "Hotel Rwanda" and "Downfall" on my lists since I didn't see them until 2005, but they are technically considered 2004 releases. And since I was having trouble narrowing them down anyway, I decided to call them 2004 releases.

As for the "F4" debate, I haven't read one of their comic books in decades, so while I always loved the characters, I can't fairly judge how well the film did or didn't capture the tone. I thought the movie was okay, lightweight fun. It had more the tone of Ivan Reitman FX comedy than a superhero adventure (though it should have been funnier). Didn't love it, didn't hate it.

"Sahara" was just a darn fun movie. Didn't make my list, I had a blast with it. I'm glad it has fans here.
