Brandon Sanderson / *WoK Spoilers* The Almighty?
« on: September 01, 2010, 06:07:37 AM »
I think it's relatively safe to say that the Almighty in Way of Kings was a shard. Whether this puts him in a similar situation to Preservation in Hero of Ages isn't clear though, as for instance his power may already have been claimed.

What I'm wondering is... do we think that he and Odium are the only shards in play? Does his power have anything to do with Dalinar's visions, or is he just the counterpart of Odium? (presumably that would make him "Philius" or something...)

Obviously there's a bunch of other questions, but some of them are likely to be answered in future books. (such as what, if anything, his plans were with the Knights Radiant and the Heralds, who together were presumably his answer to the Voidbringers)

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Other Writers Like Brandon?

Give me a few years... ;)

As for people with fiction released and available, I think it's pretty much Rothfuss or Weeks right now. There are a few series that come thematically close to what Brandon does, (Wheel of Time is the big one here, I think) but nothing that really says "Hard Fantasy".

Brandon Sanderson / Re: WoK: Shalan - near end of book **SPOILERS**
« on: September 01, 2010, 05:52:48 AM »
My assumption is that her father had one and she got he when she killed him.  Though that does raise the question of how exactly she killed him when he has a shardblade.  Hmmm...

I don't think there's much to ponder there.  Who would expect their beloved daughter of killing them?  Getting him dead within the 10 hearbeats doesn't seem like a big stretch.

The real questions are WHY would she kill him?  Was it on purpose or accident?  If on purpose, what did he do to deserve it?

She makes it quite clear during the book that he wasn't a very good father, and that while he didn't actively mistreat her the same way he did to her siblings, he did isolate her and restrict her a lot. It's possible that was enough, or that there was some relatively small straw on top of his mistreatment of her siblings that made her decide he needed to die.

I'm not saying that those are her reasons, just to keep an open mind. :)

I don't think that the Soulcaster for the father was a charade. I think that the soulcasting power was pretty unique, and it would be strange for both Jasnah and Shallan's father to be bonded to a soulcasting spren.

Speaking of which, the scene where Shallan was sketching the spren, and them following her, was pretty creepy.

Jasnah implies that she isn't a Radiant or that there's a way to soulcast without being a Radiant during that conversation, so it's also possible Shallan's father was able to soulcast that way, too.

The only things hard about WoT are that #1 is so much like Lord of the Rings, and that you need to find an enormous amount of time to get through them all ;)

Well if it's anything like Alcatraz, it won't be. From the chapter or so I've read, it doesn't really seem to fit into the Adonalsium framework.

Have a great time all. :)

Precisely.   You must be prepared for ANYTHING.

Like gorillas in phone booths, that get moved, and it takes longer to find out who they're calling.

Speaking of phones, you know how you should do your match?

iPhone app. XD

I just want Brandon to work on these now. Long time Wheel of Time fan and holy crap he needs to stop writing those and finish this series!
I'm extremely inclined to agree with you because I haven't read the WoT.  I've been saying he should work on his own stuff the whole time!

Now you have something to do while you wait for Stormlight Archive #2. ;)

Nah, you probably just skimmed the name the first time and then kept pronouncing it the same way in your head. ;)

I'll probably buy a second one to lend out just in case it didn't get counted.

Also, I finished WoK yesterday. You're all going to love it. :D

The ARC really doesn't capture the awesomeness of the final product.

It's heavy and it's gorgeous. All the artwork looks so much better, everyone's work is in there now (the ARC is missing some artwork, and I didn't realize just how much) and it's just a solid brick of a book. To be sure, the ARC is a collector item, but if you can't get one don't feel bad about it. You'll get the better product in less than a week.

You guys are in for a real treat!

Oh yeah, the art is great, having seen it first hand, and the UK edition at least is about twice the size of a regular paperback and just over a thousand pages long. It's technically a paperback, but it makes my hardcover of Warbreaker look thin and underfed. :D

The cover is very sturdy though, which is great- I dislike huge books with really flimsy paperback covers that are really easy to bend. I feel like I could throw the book around a bit without damaging it, not that I would. :)

I suppose so, so long as it doesn't cause any problems for Brandon or Tor. :)

What the crap! Yours shipped after mine and you got it before me....

I had a release copy, not an ARC. Apparently my online store broke the street date =/
