So, Sprig, when are you going to have something better for me to put up than the current screen? (I'll give you a cookie if you do it soon....)
-
hum? Well you can change the text on that one at least. I thought you wanted me to wait for 42 to get me a style guide before I did anything. But if you want something else until then have Tage get you a database and I'll start the backend. Also if you give me your FTP log in stuff so I can directly upload that would help. If not, I'll just make everything localy and e-mail it to you. However, I DO need to know the database's name and log in or there's no point in me doing anything for you.
I'm waiting on SE to get me a typography style for WG.org, so between waiting on that and animating a flash game (wich I loath doing more then an hour or so a day becasue it's so boreing) I've been working on for the past week and a half, I've got the free time.
-
I don't know anything about the process, really, so ignore anything stupid I say. I really do appreciate you guys doing this for me.
I would kind of like to be able to start adding updates here fairly soon. And, I'm very curious to see what kind of colors and pictures 42 decides to use.
I sent you the username and password.
-
Some things to consider for me.
Do you want people to regester? If it's something you'd like down the line, but not right away I can code everthing and just not have a way to regester/login at the site till you want to have that feature.
How do you want to handle articles at the site? What types of articles do you want?
-
I don't think I want registration. I mean, why does it matter? I'm not even sure why places do this.
I would, however, like a place where people can sign up for email updates about my works. A newsletter kind of thing.
As for articles, I intend to include various things on the site.
First: Sample chapters and blurbs for each of my books.
Second: Rants/commentaries
Third: News about current works. (I'd also like a little box in the corner that I can update showing my progress on current books as a percentage. Like, I input how many pages out of a projected number I've written, and it shows a percentage on the main page. Just a little tiny thing, however.)
Um, probably more, but that's all I can think of at the moment. As for links, I really like the link box at the project majestic mix site--a little square thing with nifty little pictures in it.
-
ok, now how do you want blurbing to work on the main page? Like twg where you have to make a blurb for every article? Have it auto blurb? Auto blurb can work two ways either haveing a blurb field where you enter an article, or have it automaticaly just take the fist x number of characters and blurb that with a "Click here to read more" link.
Or do you want it so that the whole articles appear on the main page (like what PVP does) or a combo of the two?
Also expanding on the "deparments" do you want each to have they;re own pages like here or when you click on, for example, chapter samples, just haveing things listed like a search engine?
-
I don't want everything on the main page to be a blurb. I'd kind of like to link to rants, and then include other things--like updates and interesting tidbits--as they strike me.
I don't want a 'click to read more' thing. More of a "I wrote an article about blah blah blah. Click away to read!" Then, there would be a rants page, where I could include more.
I suppose that's like the TWG. However, I don't want all of the other stuff--like the picture and header--cluttering things up.
I'd prefer their own pages for departments.
-
Ok, so what do you want on the deparment pages? How do you want them to differ?
-
Rants, Books, uh...other stuff. I'll think about it. But, the books page should link to a separate 'department' page for each separate book or series.
-
Think you misunderstood me, not what deparment pages do you want. But what do you want on that deparment page. So if you had a "Rant" page what would be there? The most recent rant and a link to past ones? Several summeires (blurbs) to the most recent 5 rants? And introductory page with links to a list of the rants?
What about your book pages? How would they be different design/layout wise then the rants?
I need to know this becasue it'll affect alot of the structure of how things are saved.
-
Hum. I think maybe a drop down list somewhere at the top of the page, which includes a name of the rant and the date. Then, the one you select shows up below.
I kind of would like the book pages to be 'themed' toward the book in question. This isn't important right now, since I'll only have ELANTRIS, but in the future I might like to change some of the icons and graphics on the main page to represent my most recent work. However, when you select a specific book page, it should flip back to the layout for that book.
One other thing--I kind of like how OSC does his website buy having a 'newsbox' for his different pages on the front page. For instance, we could have a 'new in rants' box that has more permanent blurbs regarding things on the rants page. Also, a 'New book releases' box, that showed the cover of my most recent book, would be very nice.
-
What did you do to your site? When trying to access it I get a txt file that all jibberish.
-
I bet it was a movie file of some sort. Happens all the time.
-
no, I found what it is. But I'm not sure what it does, or why he uploaded it. If you read this EUOL, I'm chageing that file name so others don't have this problem.
-
I didn't upload anything.
-
It was a CGI file, if you didn't upload it then it might have been a hacker. Though he couldn't have been that good if he totaly missed placeing it in your CGI-Bin.
-
OR! It could have created itself! much like early proteins formed the first life form which eventually evolved into humans. You've got the primordial soup of computers for a web host, EUOL! This is wonderful stuff for a speculative fiction writer. You are the witness to the creation of code-based life!
-
I don't know what it is. Even though it's a CGI file, when I open it there's nothing but jibberish. Usealy with those you can see the code by opeing them up in notebook.
-
you can't parse life. Even with a powerful compiler.
-
hehe, guess this was Tage's doing, Or someone at verious. Looks like someone was trying to install Urchin (a stat tracking program), and screwed it up.
-
Heh, ah yes, indeed. Well, I just fixed that, so it won't happen again.
-
No problem. I was just worried that we'd been hacked....
(Now I'm kind of sad that I wasn't. I've never had a website to get hacked before.)
-
Well considering that this is the only site you've had you still have lots of time.
-
I've had my sites hacked before, and I'd rather not have to go through that again.
-
I'm planning on hacking EUOL's brain and stealing all his writing skillz.
-
hey the menu bar is too dark, maybe try white text on it.
-
I still think it should be brandonsauruson.com
-
well, considering that we're waiting on 42's design for the site, I'm not makeing any changes to the layout. No reason to since what's up there is just a space saver for 42's design.
-
I'd just like to say that I saw 42's design today, and it's absolutely amazing. That guy really has some talent. Sprig, you and he should start up your own web-design company. With amazing visual pieces like the TWG and BS.com up, I'll bet you could get some business.
-
if they do, then I could be the third example they create! yay!
-
I've actualy got the base blurb functions ready to be moved to WG.org test site. They'll be up tomorrow. I was going to surprise you, but...
-
yay!
I hope that nothing I say comes off as a complaint. I'm very grateful to have volunteer service. I just think it'd be cool to have a site with appearance designed by 42. But I hesitate to ask him since I know he's super busy.
-
Psh, he hasn't had a job in over 4 months. And he just graduated from school (he had all but one class, and indipendent study at that). You just need to convince him to do it.
-
I've just seen how many projects he always has on his plate. But I will perhaps try to flag him down.
-
So, I'm getting graphics ready. Hopefully they will be done by Thursday.
-
Yay!
I'm gonna have cool website,
I'm gonna have cool website.
-
And totally 42-tutionalized!
-
Lol. Nice one, Gemm. You hadn't made me laugh in a while--I was beginning to worry that you'd lost your edge!
-
Well you know, I like to save things. Keep them under wraps, and then wait for the moment to strike.
Oar I could just not be posting as much anymore because of unforseen things.
-
Um, Sprig I placed a lot of the main graphics on the network. Photoshop cut them up and placed them in a html table for me. Don't feel obligated to use any spacer graphics. I also include a doc with some of the color configurations.
I just need to make some decisions on the side boxes. And I want to make some nameplates for the different sections.
-
Cool I'll have a gander at them today when I get home. Thanks 42.
-
ok I've messed around with what you gave me 42 and I'm going to have to have you make some changes to how everything is croped. Also I'm going to have to have you either make a new version of image_12 or seperate the background from the foreground.
-
Wow. Looking cooler already!
-
I've got it a little farther along, but there's a few problems. One is that he hasn't sized up the site for the side boxes we want and so that's going to affect the layout, and the second has to do with the top of the text box overlaping the logo/menu and how a few of the images were cut. I've fixed most of the image problems to some extent though.
Edit: you can see how I'm building it at http://www.brandonsanderson.com/index2.php
-
Heh. Cool! I can watch it changing in real time....
5 am.
Book...almost...done...
Must...finish...chapter....
PS...no...D&D...stupid Earl and Gunda...
I'm...going...to tell them...that if they...don't...play...next week...I'll...find other...players.
-
just a reminder; if you're going to link to TWG, you should probably use an image that spells "official" correctly
-
that's just a test graphic SE, to see how those side boxes would look holding a graphic.
Also I got from 42 font and font color, but I'm going to probaly need some sizes and such.
I've got basicaly the main site redone on the link I gave you in my previous posts. So I need all the info on how you want the blurbs/text to look. Because I don't think any of it looks that good.
EDIT: I went ahead and switched the two around so the old main page is "index2.php" and the new one is the default.
-
I'm thinking the main font needs to be one size smaller.
-
ok, I e-mailed EUOL on his thoughts on that, but I can shift it down one size right now. Also 42 are you at home or work?
edit: ok I set the size to an overall "small" size. I think it looks much better.
-
home at the moment, where are you?
-
I love that red dude. Very TRON like, but also not entirely TRON. The banner is interesting too. Are there going to be little banners made for those who want to link to BS.com?
-
yes and no Gemm. There will be banners for BS.com but they will not be little becasue it is a great privialge for the common person to be able to link to BS.com because it is full of BS greatness. The banners will be 1 gig in size and will crash all undeserving computers.
-
Ahh, going for a PA ad. I see. Hail BS!
-
42's working on some new stuff for the site. So Once he gets those done I'll finish the front page. I'll also forward the part of your e-mail that talks about the introduction thingy.
-
Can you non-IE users check out http://www.brandonsanderson.com/ and let me know if there are any unusual spaces or grpahic gliches. Oh, I allready know about the one below the blurb box.
-
Works fine on moz, as far as I can see.
-
lol. I can see that the link bars at the top all lead someplace now. You're a crack-up sometimes, Sprig.
-
Brandon:
It's your pal Jen G from NY. If you know who i am write me back at [email protected] I've been looking for you!!!
-
Hey - does someone speak Latin, or did you use a Latin translator program or something to put that jibberish on the site? I'm currently in need of Latin translation services myself.
-
I common technique in layout design is to go find some Latin jibberish and place it into the text areas. The idea is that words are a distraction to the actual layout.
I know from my own experience, that most people can't seem to focus on the layout if there is something they can read there instead. So when I'm trying to get feedback about the layout and design, it's really counter-productive when all I get is, "there's a typo in the second paragraph and you mispelled..." I didn't mispell anything, that's the writer/editor's job to worry about not the layout artist or the web-programer.
So to answer you question. Spriggan and I just did a search for jibberish in latin and threw it into the text field. No clue what it means. Well, I have some clue, because I can read portuguese, but nothing accurate.
-
I see.
-
I took latin once,... what do you need translated...
I could break out the old text books...
-
42 did a side bar for the site, I guess he wants me to put it up even though it's supposed to go between the modboxes and those he hasn't done yet. Look for it today or tomorrow.
-
Boy it sure is fun to come back to projects you haven't worked on for a month or so and have to spend a bit figureing out where you left off and where you where headed with the project. It also dosen't help that Blade runner is on TV while I'm trying to do this.
-
*sigh* I hit a big snag on the blog and I'm waiting on some help on what's going on. So unless I get it pretty quick I won't have this working till next week (I'm not going to be working on it later today or tomorrow).
You can see it here:
http://www.monkeyslothstudio.com/test/caltest.php
As you can see when you click on a day in the calender it loads the new page inside the frame, it's not supposed to do that. if you open it in a new window (ctrl-shift-leftclick in windows) it works just fine.
Edit: It's working now, but I'm too tired to finish the rest of the program today. Blame it on SE comming down if you need a scapegoat.
-
You're just lucky I have to wait 10 hours to play my Troll in WoW to become rested again. Anyway here's the blog for everyone since EUOL hasn't linked to it.
http://www.brandonsanderson.com/blog.php
There are still somethings that need to be done both code wize and layout wize. But it's more or less done.
-
i think i'm still ethically prohibited from reading blogs. Even Brandons.
-
I just went to the site this morning because I hadn't looked at it in a while. It's looking really nice so far. Is there only one day on the blog so far? Because I can't click on other days.
-
Ya so far only one new post. The blue square is the most recent day with a post. I'm still working on some of the colors and text size but expect to remain close to what you see now. If there was another post you'd see it as an underlined link (orangeish color as of this post).
-
I haven't linked to it? Have you seen my sig, Sprig?
-
Not until after I made that post.
-
Just a note for anyone who goes to the site over the next few days. 42 gave me some new graphics and I'm changeing the graphics around. So there's going to be little gliches here and there till we get the site looking the way we want to.
-
Return of the horrible graphics!
Umm 42 gave me a grahics for the side boxes and I accidently deleted it so you've got the old test boxes there as a space holer for now. I'll throw up the new graphics later today. I kinda slacked off on doing this, I've had this graphics for almost a month now. Oh well, better late then never I guess. The far upper right box is to show 42 what we've got left for space there.
-
*sigh* I love it that the only time the severs BS.com have FTP brain farts is when I'm at work.
-
Uh...admin is a bit messed, Sprig.
However, great job with the blog mod box!
-
try the admin page now. That is what I was fixing when I made that last post.
-
I swear that Verious has to be the lamest hoster out there. They don't support a lot of the extra PHP functions like the calender and GD.
*sigh* oh well guess I'll have to get the percentage bar that EUOL wants on his site the lame, streach the graphic out way.
-

Was that supposed to be Verio? Because if you're still hosting through my coworker, it isn't Verio anymore. He switched to something else. Plus GD isn't a PHP function, it's another program entirely.
-
No it's brandon's site I'm talking about. Also GD is now part of PHP since 4.3 is been included in it.
-
I still have the same Admin problem, Sprig.
-
humm thought I had fixed the problem. but I guess I didn't upload the new version. Try it now.
-
I'm in. Good job!
-
humm...I'm thinking I'll add an options to designate if it's being written or on edit. That would then show a differnt color bar and mark it as editing. Save you from have to type that in. How many differnt options would you want? I think you'll like the new graphics for them all too.
-
Okay, added the books I'm working on, but it wouldn't let me delete the tests you did.
Also, it won't let me edit the percentages--it resets them to 0 if I try and edit the title of the book.
As for formatting, might it be better if we put the bar on a line below the title, indented just a bit? Or, something like that? The book titles are a bit long sometimes.
-
*sigh* again my problem. I had input spelled imput. All fixed. For both problems.
-
lol. Works great now! All we have to worry about is cosmetics.
-
Hey sprig, you seen Real Life's modboxes?
http://www.reallifecomics.com/
They kick some serious trash. The thing I like about them? Easy to keep them separate, and they always draw your eye. I'm not saying we have to change anything we have, I'm just formulating what it is about some websites that I like.
-
E-mail 42 about it. Thats more what I like too, but he's the one designing this not me.
-
Okay, I did a modbox-topper that incorporates some elements of what you saw on reallifecomics.com. I haven't settled on anything yet.
-
I made a new progress bar graphic too. I was going to add a glowing effect but as is it dosen't look to hot. So I went with a simpler beleved one. We'd have to increase the size of the bar graphic substanchly to make it look decent. Even then I think it would probaly distract too much. I'll be adding different colored ones soon so diferent book stages will have a different color.
-
Can I suggest making the news blurb bar a bit wider? The size of it just somewhat affends me.
-
What screen resolution are you useing Gemm? I think that might be your problem. Since this site is designed as a commercial/info site that has to reach a wide audience we designed it for lower resolutions.
-
1280x1024 and 1024x768.
-
on 1280x1024 it'll look small less then 10% (6% in the month of June) of all the people with PCs use that resolution so there reason to design for it. I use 1024x768 and it looks just fine to me so that's probaly a personal prefrence and on 800x600 it'll look a tad to big. We had to take into account that people do use other resolutions but there had to be a balence so it looked good on all 3. If we made them larger it would be very difficult to navigate on a 800x600 resolution which is still a very common resolution (almost 40%).
http://www.thecounter.com/stats/2004/June/res.php
-
Hmmmm, well Sprigiddy-dig-dig-dig, it still looks a bit small on 1024x768. How long is it now from left to right?
-
well my laptop can ONLY go to 800x600. But the site looks good on it.
-
it's about 600 px from left to right. We;ll be useing the right hand side but since that's the side that gets cut on the low res you'll probaly only see advertisments and such there.
And again I think it just comes down to personal prefrence weather or not its too small on 1024x768. But it is good to know some one thinks it's too small, but I don't think 42 has any plans on makeing anything larger.
-
Small is trendy right now in design.
-
so are monkeys
-
Aren't there "fit to screen" things nowadays? That seems to be what the TWG pages do.
I like how you threw that word in there 42. Trendy.
-
yes, things will naturally stretch to fit if you specify their width as a percentage or don't specify the width. However, this doesn't alway slook good with the graphics. For example, the banner on the forum. the table with all the "heading" information stretches, but it's really ugly with the banner not stretching. Because graphics DON'T stretch, and would generally look bad if they do. So instead of that problem, one solution is just to decide how much of the screen they'll use and stick to that, defining it in terms of pixels. That way it always looks the same. In addition, when the text fills up that much space, you have very long lines. It gets more difficult to move to the correct line after finishing one, and imo, looks tacky
And then some whiney brat who doesn't realize that the whole point of having high resolution display is so you can see multiple windows at the same time comes along and wonders why the display on your website isn't a thousand pixels wide.
-
Ya, pretty much what SE said.
Streach to fit realy only works with low graphics sites, thats why it works with TWG. Besides the banner we don't use graphics to define or seperate different parts of the page. The way the BS.com is set up streching to fix would ruin it. The box that the blurbs are in is 3 different graphics that have a set width. The headder graphic is actualy about 10 differnt ones the side bars are all different too.
I could make a different site for each of the 3 different resolutions useing Javescript to determing the resolution then directing the user to the correct page. But that would intail makeing 3 different sets of each graphic as well as a bunch of code changes. It's realy not worth all that extra work. Heck, I cannot even think of a site that does that even though it's been avalible for several years now.
-
Sprig:
I like the text off-white color.
That deep red for the bolds and poster names looks a bit off, but I don't know why. What does 42 think?
The blog page looks great.
-
I would say that the deep red as text just doesn't work. It doesn't provide enough contrast to make it easier to read. Try a light gray, like F4F4F4.
-
Can I take you out to lunch sometime this week to talk maps, 42?
-
Oh, and Sprig, how about a tracking function? Urchin or something. It would be interesting to start tracking our hits early on, I think.
-
K, I'll make those changes tonight.
AS for urchin, Tage uploaded it about 2 months ago. I'll link it to the admin page if you want. If not I can just send you the link.
-
Either one.
-
done.
-
All right. So, how about we get the rants section up and running, sprig? Can you throw up a EUOLogy archiving function?
-
Edit: Or, I just made a big mistake and wish to withdraw from the race (human).
Does this (or that) mean there will be more people(s) chiming in with Rants for the site?
P.S. Edit: I gave blood no more than 3 hours ago and am rather tired. Forgive not me but the heart you hold inside.
-
Sorry, Spook. You lost me on that one.
-
I thought you meant TWG, not your website.
-
if you want to spam EUOL with nonsensical e-mails the beta contact page is up for bussiness.
www.brandonsanderson.com/contact.php
Just DON'T select the "I like monkeys option" or you'll spam me, and then I'll send the monkeys to kill you.
-
Sprig just to be professional, you spelled awesome wrong. I don't know if EUOL cares or not, just telling you.
-
I don't care since he, EUOL, will be changeing it to what he wants it to be soon. It's just a placeholder until then. But thanks for pointing it out.
-
Well EUOL's been askin' for it so here it is. The beta article page. There's still several things that need to be added (like takeing the News section and showing it only in the news page), but feel free to post any comments and the like.
http://www.brandonsanderson.com/article.php
-
I sure feels good to be able to say this; that is totally wrong. Doofus! =P
-
I sure feels good to be able to say this; that is totally wrong. Doofus! =P
I fail to see how that comment was constructive in any way. I have no problem with gem being silly, but please when I ask for advice please make the posts worth me reading.
-
Sprig, it looks good. I'm confused, though. What part of the site is it supposed to be linked to from? News?
-
It's not linked on the main site yet since I'm not done. Though you'll have the news page wich will show news only and then the rants section will show the other articles. We;re acutaly in the proccess of renameing "rants" to something else.
-
Just a couple of minor tweaks, Sprig. I wouldn't mention little things like this, but you're trying to make this a product that you can use around on lots of sites, so I figure I might as well voice my thoughts.
First, it would probably be easier for people if you listed the newer blog items at the top on the admin/edit page too. My thoughts are that once you have hundreds of the things, it will be a pain to scroll down to the bottom to edit/delete a blog item that you just posted.
Second, on my screen (front main page, blog mod box) the last two pixels of the 'o' in 'Hugo' have been cut off. the 'awards' wraps around to the next line like it should, but the 'o' gets sliced for some reason.
-
Oh, and I wanted to give an explanation of the 'EUOLogies' under 'Rants.' However, the edit pages selection on the backend still has the old version of the page, before you added the EUOLogy archive. How do I access the new page?
-
1) k, I'll make that change.
2) this dosen't happen in my browser. Do it happen to anyone else?
3) as of right now you cannot. I'm working on different page styles so you can use the page manager and set up the article, news and contact page, just need to give me a bit. Though if you send me the text I'll add it for you.
-
Fixed the graphics glitch on the main page where there was a bar under the blurbs, it was a problem with the overlap.
if the site dosen't look like mine post a screenshot or e-mail one to me with your browser and version.
http://www.monkeyslothstudio.com/pictures/bsscreen.jpg
-
Looks good to me.
However, here is something to ask 42. Doesn't the screen look a little...off-balanced with the picture on the side like that?
Maybe I'm just used to looking at it the other way, but with the picture starting down so low, the whole 'feel' of the man page seems to be thrown off. Maybe if we had another invisible box, like the news box, to put the picture in? One that started up as high as the news box, and was translucent at the top (before the picture started)?
I'm not a graphic designer, though, so I can't say too much. Just ask 42 how it looks, and see if he has any suggestions.
-
Hey, Sprig. I just posted a new blurb, but it went second on the list despite my clicking 'always on top.' Any idea why?
-
because one of the others is set to allwayse on top. If that's the case it places them in the order they were created.
-
Hum. Now it's not posting my name beside the 'posted by' place on the blurbs section.
-
intresting, for some reason if the blurb is set to "allwase one top" it dosen't show your name, yet it showes mine. This will be fun to fix.
-
El Fixoed.
-
Them clever internet gnomes. Always making things stop working.
-
EUOL blog, now with archives!
http://www.brandonsanderson.com/blog.php
-
BS.com, now with mailing list!
-
I love to see my name in lights.
-
Yes, HoM. Some day when we're both a bit more famous than we are now, we'll have to like have dueling blogs like Penny-Arcade and PvP. We could pretend we hate each other, and generally siphon a bunch of traffic back and forth.
Kind of like Fell was planning to do...well, with himself. He was going to have the "Dan Wells" persona for his serious fiction and another one "Cecil something" for his humorous fiction.
-
Hey, Sprig. What do you think about throwing up a news blurb or some other bit of text at the very top, like we have on the TWG main page? I'd like something--maybe just two or three sentences--that explains what the site is and the like. It would have to never expire, and always be above everything else--even the 'always on top' posts.
-
Ya I was going to set it up so you could have a post never get deleated, just never got around to it. As for another allwayse on top, the idea was to only have one at a time, but I guess I could do another.
-
By the way. When I go to the contact page, I get a little bit of code appearing on the left side of the page. Something about 'Warning. Mysql blah, blah, blah.' It doesn't interfere with things much, however.
In other news, we ARE playing tomorrow. Gunda also heard that you do websites, so beware. She may try to bribe you with cookies.
-
Ah, well if she can get Eral to look over some code for me (it's peral) she may not need cookies.
As for the jibberish, that's becsaue I changed the Database that holds the book complete %s, forgot that I never linked the contact page with the others so it's still useing the old code.
-
EUOL, your current blog amuses me -- my editor changes all of my semicolons into dashes. I think we need to trade.
-
lol.
How does Covenant work copy edits, anyway? Do you get galleys like I have sitting here, with the proofreading marks written all over them?
-
Yep. I must confess, though, that I haven't been going over them with a fine-toothed comb. My knowledge of English is limited, and I've never met a comma I didn't like. I trust my editor to make most of those changes.
The main source of contention is: colons, parentheses, and italics. I use a lot of the first two, and hate the last, and we argue about it a lot.

Now with RSS feeds!

If any of you use RSS readers can you test it out for me? I'm useing sharpreader with no problems, but want to test it on others as well.
Thanks
-
Sprig, this may be fruitless to ask right now, because I'm not really at a place where I can really concentrate on it, but I've been thinking of getting a website together for my photography so I can make it more of a sideline. Any suggestions on places to start?
-
So you're wanting to make a business site to sell your photogrophy? There's a few things to consider, like how much money and time you're willing to invest in this. How much of the site do you want to make yourself and weither you're willing to pay someone to make the site if you don't. If you want to have a shopping system on your site (like a shopping cart and payment systems) or if you're just going to use paypal.
Paying someone to make and manage a site for you can be very expensive, adverage design costs I think are around $50-$60 an hour, or a flat fee of like $500 for a site (some charge by page made, that's usealy $60-$70). Shopping cart systems are even more expensive, at least $300 for the software then the hassle of setting it up. Also don't forget to buy a URL ($8-$10 a year) and then getting hosting ($10-$100/month) based off of what the sites needs are.
-
Sounds like it may be more trouble than I'm willing to invest right now. It isn't so much for shopping as for showing my portfolio for people who want to hire me for weddings, portraits, that sort of thing. But I keep thinking I should start selling my work, too--the landscape stuff, etc.--so eventually that may be something I need to look into. When I do, though, I'll have to organize my negatives, etc. etc. too.
Thanks for the info.
-
Well just haveing a site that showcases your work and then haveing contact info is a lot less work, but there's still quite an investment of money and/or time.
-
You might want to just get a free page then, toss some pictures on the server, and include a "contact me" link.
-
I'll have to think about this. I do want to have something, but there are so many things demanding my time that it may not be something I can do right now. I've thrown them up on photobucket, but that's not really what I want. Some guy on another site posted a link to his own photography website and it included a slide show, and then he included a link to a tutorial about how he did it, which I didn't look at, because I had a feeling it would take more time than I was willing to spend.
-
I could probably whip something up for you. I have a little program that can do that sort of thing. organizes 'em in to albums, gives you a slideshow if you want.
-

She will never get a profeshinal contact (ie someone wanting to hire her) if she's linking people on Geocities or someother free site. She might as well walk into the company and submit crayon drawings while not haveing bathed in a month, she'd have a better chance then.
-
What's wrong with not bathing?
anyway, I meant something like the hosting I get or whatever (the zyx.net project). You can't do a business site there, but you can post a portfolio and put a contact. Just don't use the site to actually run any business

It makes me feel very un-geeky that I don't know this: What is LARP?
-
Live Action Role Playing. Where you make RPing closer to theatre by walking around and physically acting out your actions.
Most common version is the Vampire ones. There are videos on the web of D&D ones, but do not ask me for such evil.
-
Some people are strange.
-
Hey EUOL or Spriggan,
on the "books" page, the title says "Comming Soon."
It should be "Coming Soon."
I'd fix it myself, but it won't let me. Grumble.
-
I'd fix it, but I have no idea how! Sprig, this one is all you.
-
Fixed. It's under the options menu under "manage books", works the same way the article types do at the moment.
-
Congrats on the book tour, EUOL. Is Dave also published by Tor?
We were talking about book tours and advertising/publicity budges in class yesterday. I'm sending young Ursula Le Guin on a book tour, imaginatively speaking. My teacher was saying that basically what happens is you plan as many contacts in a particular city as possible--local media, libraries, bookstores, school visits, etc. Is this what you and Dave will be doing?
-
Well of Ascension has been at 30% for weeks and weeks now. Why, hmmmm?
-
Could it possibly have something to do with NaNoWriMo? Or maybe a certain 518 class?
-
He didn't start anything new for NaNoWriMo though. Even at the length of most of his books, 50k should have raised the percentage a LITTLE
-
All right, all right. Updated.
-
Why does the front page have no text now?
-
Well, thats what happens when you bring in a creative consultant such as myself into the picture. I told him to get rid of the text for posterities sake. He needs to build his image up a little bigger. I've asked a team of high school students to build him a flash website with many frames. I've even got Peter Monyleux making a web-game for him to put on the new flash site. It'll be ground-breaking and be loosely based off of the book.
-
I can't tell if you're being serious...oh wait, you're Gemm.
-
Yes, which means the answer to "Are you being serious?" is "3 chickens."
-
And 3/18's of a quarter of digital cameras.
-
EUOL told me he couldn't see the drop down menus on this page, so I need you all to check and tell me if you can or cannot. There are 2, one for books and one for rants. The menu's are Javascript so if you cannot see them check to make sure JS is enabled. And, as usual, post what browser you were useing. Thanks.

Mozilla, I see it fine.

ie6, works just fine

Live in Japan and want to get a copy of Elantris? Just go here.

-
I see it on safari.
-
I have a feeling that he just had JS disabled, but do we have any Netscape, foxfire users just to get the last 2?
-
FOXFIRE BRIGADE TO THE FRONT! FLAME THEM!
Heh.
-
FoxFire performed well, sir. Flames are a go.
-
Yeah, they work on Safari, but the color scheme when you mouseover is horrible and makes it unreadable. That it's a plain font menu dropping down from a fancy font menubar doesn't do happy things for me either.
-
In Mozilla Firefox the text in the box on the right (Farland's quote) is going over the box's right margin. I don't know if it's supposed to be that way or not, but I thought I would mention it.
-
Actually, it works in IE for me, Spirg. It was Mozilla that was having troubles--and I haven't taken the time to update it for java.
-
It's not working on Netscape for me, but it does identify the problem as a JS error. It's most likely that we haven't installed JS on this old Netscape browser.

ya that's a CSS issue, I won't be useing that box in the final version. Though I'm a little annoyed that Foxfire has problems with simple CSS.
Ok, humm...I'll see if I can use an earlier version of Java and see if that fixes it.

New RSS feed up (http://www.brandonsanderson.com/page.php?id=12)this one is for any book updates we feel like announceing. So any new reviews, news or extra stuff.
Chapter annotoations will be a different RSS feed once those start happening next week.
-
I'm glad I went to the site--you guys didn't mention that Elantris was on sale! I was going downtown today anyway, I'll stop by B&N to get it. Just called and they said they should have 4 on the shelves.
-
Wow, that's great. As soon as someone sees it locally, let us know when and where.
-
someone email me Brandon's address. I wants this book asap, and to get it signed I need to send it to him (as well as a fiver for shipping).

Just sent it, Eric. Sorry--I didn't realize these things would begin shipping so soon.
-
New RSS Feed (http://www.brandonsanderson.com/anno.php?book=&id=2) up for Chapter annotations.
-
Hey, Sprig, I don't know if you have anything to do with the Amazon link in the upper right corner of the main page, but the box appears to be slightly too small. Since I'm using Mozilla I bet it's simply a difference in CSS box model. When I put my point over the area it scrolls (just a little though). I can providea screen cap if it's important enough for you to bother with.
-
it is. I have to design for IE and not Mozilla which has recently changed their CSS prosscssor to meet W3 standards (same with foxfire) and so IE and them are completly different. Since Mozilla, foxfire and Opera still display everything (but smaller) I leave it be and code it for IE which displayes it larger. I'll probaly change things once IE 7 comes out next year but that's only if IE becomes more W3 complient.
-
Wouldn't it be better to design it for moz so it fits, and is just slightly bigger in IE thus still fitting? If it's so small in moz that a scrollbar appears, something's wrong...
-
Nope, because if I do that there's a good chance things will overlap, appear in different places or not even appear at all. The rule of thumb is allwayse design for the browser that has 96% of the market first. If I want, and I don't right now, I could write a different set of CSS for Moz/Fox/opera and have Javascript detect a browser and then choose which CSS to apply. That's what actualy a lot of CSS heavy sites do.
-
There isn't a scroll bar, Ookla. It just scrolls, but it's not a big deal.

uhm... the spoiler button doesn't work on any of the chapter annotations for Elantris. It just sends me to the "how this annotation thing works" page.
-
ya that's a bug I noticed a few days ago. Just haven't done any programming since I got back from Idaho.
-
The spoiler system used to be working just fine (except for that "Enable" checkbox which has never had any purpose I could divine). Can you look at old versions to see what has changed?
-
No.
It's not like you people pay me.
-
We pay you our heartfelt appreciation. :D
-
Speak for yourself.
-
Chapter 4 annotation now works, EUOL used the wrong tags to mark off the hidden text. The side bar links also work now for anything with a chapter in the title.
-
What is the "Enable" checkbox for, anyway? Does it enable something?
-
ya the 1,000,000 person to enable it gets a prize.
-
ooh ooh ooh
