So do the editors here know some good resources to learn about editing? Preferably on-line and free, but books would be good.
I've decided that after years of working with editors, I still don't understand what they are thinking. So I feel like doing some research.

I have a really good book called Editors on Editing from my English 330 class that was very good. Also, there's an article (by whom and in what place I can't tell you) we read called "Behind the Blue Pencil." Brenna would know about both of these, because she was in the same class.
Online, I can't help you.

I know the HumPub was going to make an online editor resource section, but it never happened mostly because faculty in the editing program couldn't agree on much of anything. Eventually the whole thing got bogged down and left.

You might try The Copyeditor's Handbook by Amy Einsohn. It's a nice, all around guide.

I should probably check out some editing books. I just kind of do it...

There are a good number of resources out there. I have a list at home that I'll put up here later tonight if you like. Bookwise the Chicago Manual of Style is generally seen as the editorial form of a Bible. The most recent edition is the 15th. Other good resources include a straight forward dictionary, lots of those online and a good basic grammar book. Not surprisingly the problems I see in most of the works I edit are basic rules that have been neglected, not really something that is rocket science. Unless it's a piece on engineering...then it's rocket science. :)
Best Wishes,

hey thanks! and welcome to the board JenaRey. Please introduce yourself on the appropriate thread (http://www.timewastersguide.com/boards/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=news;action=display;num=1051196804) so we can learn more about you.

nice way to mix up UBB tags and HTML tags SE. ;)
-
that was weird. I actually didn't put any HTML tags in. I did accidentally put quotes around the URL, but the rest of that tagging was put in by the board's script. anyway, fixed now.

here's an example of how to help edit (http://www.penny-arcade.com/images/2004/20041103l.jpg)
Warning. Tons of foul language.
