sorry I'm slow on this. I've still gotta go through and link to reviewed games.
-
Wow, nice job with all the linkage....
Oh, and the blurb on the front page seems to be missing a word. It doesn't make sense.
Just a head's up.

You mean you're not giving loved ones?

Hey Mr. P, great article...though I was a little diappointed to see Risk 2210 get a mention despite Risk Godstorm being newer and better (and recently reviewed by me). Buying for gamers is incredibly hard, though, and this is one of the best articles I've ever seen on the subject. This year my Mom made me send her links and pictures of the games I wanted, so she'd be sure to recognize them when she saw them.
-
Hey, it's the above mentioned Shawn. Gracias to Mr.P for such high praise.
Man, I would be a happy man if some family member or significant other got me that 30 Years of D&D book. Somehow I doubt it will happen though.
On the other hand, I'd probably be even happier if some family member or significant other got me a coffee maker with an automated timer so it would just start making coffee at 8 AM.
Great advice all around. Also, many of the FLGSs have gift registries ala Amazon.com or bridal showers, so interested parties can find out where if anywhere their beloved geek has a registry, and pick up something there.
Oh, and hi everyone.

I loved doors and windows! :) Long before I even met "P"
What a weird world hunh.
This year to avoid confusion I distributed a Christmas list with pictures, prices, likely stores and web addresses for everything, printed it out a dozen times and sent it out to people.
I put enough stuff on to be surprised and also enough to be pleased if people decide to be very generous.
Of course only about 1/2 of it was game stuff...
My real want this year is a cotton A2 style bomber jacket from orvis... for the spring and summer when you need a jacket at night and leather is just too heavy. Plus if I go out and get some Ray Bans and a Crush cap all I need is a vintage Grumman Goose and Im living one of my lifes dreams.
Does anyone want to get me a Grumman Goose?
Its only about a half million ;)
I'd even turn it into a mobile TWG gaming station...

Yes you can! Some of us are very supersticious dice rollers and getting random dice just will not do. You have to ensure they'll get along with the other dice (I do this through matching designs), have the proper function (I have dice specifically for my high-level rogue's sneak attacks as I can potentially roll 21d6 in a round), and have been properly tested (the last thing you need is a die that always rolls low).
I've matured with age, but in my youth, I had to give someone a solid punch to the shoulder when he rolled my dice without permission (they're very sensitive and particular about who rolls them).
I generally leave game buying to myself and ask for movies, books, and CDs for presents. Except for those gamer friends who already know my preferences.
-
I just wanted to chime in that I loved Doors and Windows. Really nice visual style, story pacing. I was left wanting more.
-
Dude, if your dice are that tempremental, you havn't trained them properly.
Anyway, as for that Metaphor, I have no idea what shopping for clothing for your girlfriend is like, and I suggest 100% of gamers don't either. (Gamer's with Girlfriends aren't gamer's, since real gamers don't have girlfriends)
You did say it was like games shopping though. So buying clothes for your girlfriend is enjoyable, exciting, and you end up spending more money on yourself than on the gift, and seeing a bunch more stuff you want?
Hmm, something's not quite right about that.
-
Do all australians miss the point of analogies like that?
-
only when they're useing dial-up.

Another late Christmas gift is the new CD entitled the Cheapass Album from Cheapass games.

Eric will love the song inspired by Button Men entitled "Beat People Up".

Question:
Who do I talk to to get permission to repost the part on "getting a gift" in my LJ? If they happen to read this, may I?
I'll gladly include links, copyright info, etc. I just read the article and think the advice on getting gamers gifts could use spreading.
In fact, it would be much appreciated if this article were released under a CC license (http://www.creativecommons.org), for the good of all gamers.

All work published on TWG is copyright of the original author. In this case, Lucias Meyer, aka Mr. Pleasington. He'd be the one to ask.
TWG would LIKE to have a link back as well, as sort of a bibliographic comment.
If you're only talking about a short quote, then you don't need permission, just citation. If you're talking about a sizable chunk, just ask him. I won't speak for him, but he's easy going and will probably agree to it.
-
How could I get in touch with Mr. Meyer?
-
This is his forum profile (http://www.timewastersguide.com/boards/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=;action=viewprofile;username=Mr_Pleasington).
It should have various contact methods. If you can't get hold of him by email or IM, send him a private message over the forum (through the same link).
-
His email, which I think is on his profile, tends to work well. It's a real one, not a spambucket.
-
It's hidden on his profile.
-
Hey JadeKnight,
I'm completely cool with you reposting portions of The Nerdery in you LJ as long as you:
1) Credit me (Lucias Meyer)
2) Link back to the original article
3) Link back to the TWG front page
Thanks for your interest! Enjoy.
-
Will do. Thanks for the permission. =]
