Title: forum stats: Class Importance?
Post by: Peter Ahlstrom on September 26, 2004, 10:06:13 PM
Okay, I'm confused. What does Class Importance mean? Is a low number something you should focus on, or is a HIGH number something you should focus on? Should I put more points into something with an importance of 1 or something with an importance of 10?

Is there a FAQ on this anywhere? I did a forum search for "stats" and came up with nothing useful.

The main thing to remember is that the stats are thoroughly meaningless. Beyond that, the forum FAQ has a section for teh game, but it hasn't been written yet to my knowledge. So I don't know what to tell you.

I think the pointy end would be considered the right end to poke someone with, rather than the wrong end. Just me though, and I must admit I've never actually poked someone with a spear, so I'm speaking purely on conjecture.

Yes, but you said you were poking me with the wrong end, thus it is the wrong end from you - the pokers- perspective rather than my - the pokees - respective. So it still doesn't hurt, and if you keep it up, I'll point out to everyone that you're a pokerman. (To be said in a jamaican accent)

So...the class importance numbers mean nothing?

I'm tired of getting beaten handily by people with fewer hitpoints than me!
Title: Re: forum stats: Class Importance?
Post by: Spriggan on September 30, 2004, 12:57:11 AM
the lower the importance the less points need to upgrade the item or spell, that's all it means.
Title: Re: forum stats: Class Importance?
Post by: Peter Ahlstrom on September 30, 2004, 02:46:28 AM
That sounds reversed. Huh. You can easily level up in things that are unimportant to your class, but leveling up in things that are important to your class is difficult? So it seems to me that everyone would just specialize in stuff that is unimportant to their class and build powerful characters quickly.

But what I was really asking is this: What is high importance on this scale? 1? or 10? Does 1 mean most important, or does 10 mean most important?
Title: Re: forum stats: Class Importance?
Post by: Spriggan on September 30, 2004, 03:02:14 AM
1 is most important thus takes less points.

Why did Student of Warfare get shafted on spell/equipment names?  The only thing that got named was his weapons, and I think that was after I mentioned it.  If its just coming up with the names, I can help do that.

Okay, I got a few quotes for the warrior class.

0- Ditchdigging is a trade, gravedigging is a hobby.

1- When you meet the ferryman, be a pal and tell him I got three more coming his way.

2- They say the pen is mighter than the sword, but you'll have a hard time using either once I cut your hands off.

3- What's wrong, did some crippled kid steal your real sword?

4- You're going to look pretty silly with this sword sticking out of your face.

5- This is a vorpal blade, the most powerful sword in the DnD world.  In fact, it can take your head clean off.  So you got to ask yourself one question, "Do I feel lucky?"  Well do you, punk?!

6- The human body only holds five liters of blood, so why do you have three on the outside and only two on the inside?

7- That's no cemetary, its my back yard!

8- When you have as many bonus feats as I do, you'll find it worth-while to invest in dual-wielding.  Digging two graves at once really frees up the schedule.

9- I don't need more skill points, loot corpse is untrained.

10- Stop your wimpering and fight, I only cut off your stupid legs!

11- I didn't know you could take Weapon Focus in bunkum.

12- Dying is so cliche, why don't you people try something else for a change.

13- So what now, you beat me with your severed arm, or just stand there and bleed?

14- Next time I could fight you weaponless and blindfolded, but I doubt you'd be any more of a challenge.

Post by: Eagle Prince on January 19, 2005, 03:41:06 PM
15- Your death is an experiment.  I want to see what happens when even the bowels of Hell won't accept your stink.

16- I'm going to kill you, pay off the ferryman to bring you back, then kill you again.

17- Here's a bag of gold.  Its going to take more than two coins for Charon to boat this kind of stink around.

18- I wonder if Charon will give me a group discount if I start sending this trash in bulk.

19- Yet another poor soul literally fighting for me to get them into Hell.

20- I'll need to invent a new class of Stink for you.

21- Don't worry if you wasted all your gold on healing potions, I can probably get you into Hell for free.  Charon is a personal friend of mine.

Hum.  I'm not sure what happened.  I had other things for that class, I think, but I'm not sure where they went.

Anyway, your taunts are quite clever.  I'll stick them in.

Edit--Did you come up with those, or did you filch them from somewhere?  I'd rather not end up with copyright problems...

Post by: Eagle Prince on January 19, 2005, 04:56:57 PM
Yeah... hmmm, good guy taunts can be tough though.  But the one I actually modified from a taunt I made up for my DnD cleric.

'I'm going to kill you, pay off the ferryman to bring you back, then kill you again. '

Originally that was "I'm going to kill you, raise you from the dead, then kill you again."  But it only really worked like that for a cleric (since they could do that, heh).

Cleric...

Supernatural miracles for food!

Blinded by the light... along with deaf, dumb, mute, cursed, and diseased.  I can cure all that, but there will be a surcharge of course.

I'm not allowed to shed blood, but I can bust you up pretty good with this heavy mace.

Its okay to take life if you can give it back, right?

Don't call it torture, call it purification of the soul.

Do you play DnD 3rd edition?  Well Bag-O-Rats is this really nasty trick fighters can pull off by combining Great Cleave, Whirlwind Attack, and lots of expendable enemies, or "rats" (ie summoned creatures, the BBEG's lacky minions, etc.  Or just an actual bag of rats you pack around to dump at the BBEG's feet before you Great Cleave him to death)  Its just kind of a joke for DnD players, its powerful and broken (which is why they made it impossible to do in 3.5 DnD).

see, a lot of those are spell names specifically in D&D. I don't think we can use stuff like "Phantasmal Killer" without breaking onto copyright grounds.
Title: Re: forum stats: Class Importance?
Post by: EUOL on January 26, 2005, 03:55:56 PM
Yes, I intentionally tried to avoid references to D&D.  I put in the warrior taunts you came up with because they were blasted funny, and because I figured one little section of 'in' jokes was okay.

I really like some of these--the boxing, and most of the ranged weapons--but things like "Belt of Cloud Giant Strength" seem a little too D&D to me.  I don't want to throw away the work you've done, but I'd really rather use things that seem a little more original.
Title: Re: forum stats: Class Importance?
Post by: Eagle Prince on January 26, 2005, 04:02:16 PM
I think the only dnd spells with a copyright are the ones not in the OGL, like the Mordenkainen spells... which are actually in there, just without the character name.  But no dnd spells at all?  That will take forever... although stuff like stoneskin and fireball isn't exactly dnd specific.
Title: Re: forum stats: Class Importance?
Post by: The Holy Saint, Grand High Poobah, Master of Monkeys, Ehlers on January 26, 2005, 04:17:56 PM
Actually, i'm going to rant a little aobut copyright law and proper use of the d20 or OGL lisence:

WHen you write something down, it is copyrighted. No ifs ands or buts. That is the law.

However, you can give written permission for someone to use your material in other contexts. There are already a number of legally allowed uses, some under the often mis-understood "fair use" scheme that are typically used to defend copying someone else's work, and some which cover reviews, academic work, etc. Very few of them allow you to make any money off the copyrighted material, but it's possible under things like parody (OF the material, not using copyrighted material to parody something else, which was probably the argument in American Greetings' smackdown of PA over Strawberry Strumpet).

The lisence Wizards of the Coast has provided is one of two. d20 or OGL. There are important differences, basically pertaining to how similar the system is to the original d20, but for the purposes of what you're proposing, there's no need to go into that. The essential problem with using their spell names, legally, is that we are not fulfilling terms of either lisence in many areas: actually using a d20 system being a huge one, and not posting the lisence information being another huge one, and not designating clearly and specifically which material is d20 and which is original being yet another gigantic, monster violation of the lisence.

Now, I believe EUOL's main reason for doing it was just for it to be something esle. The forum classes are not meant to be specifically D&D spoofs. They're meant to be something else entirely. However, even if he did, there would be a lot of work we'd have to do in order to make it legal before we did so. It's easier to come up with creative new ideas than it is to either copy a spell name or come up with a new name for a spell with the same idea.
