Brandon Sanderson / Re: Hopes/Predictions/Wild Theories for Book 2

A Szeth vs. Kaladin fight would be super cool. I worry of course that Szeth may kill Dalinar but, I really don't see that happening. Maybe just some paranoia from my time reading George R.R. Martin. That man uses his characters like kleenex. I really want to see the rising of the new Knights Radiant. When that was mentioned in the book I got goose bumps! I really look forward to seeing what happens between Hoid and Talenel. Oh hells, I just want the second book out now!!

Life before Death, Strength before Weakness, Journey before Destination.
Dalinar = Ned, Sadeus = Lord Bailish?  ;D
If GRRM had had a hand in the last plateau-assault, Dalinar would now have to bury one of his sons...

If GRRM has written that passage, they probably would've lost and Elohkar would have been killed by his wife that was having incest with the her twin brother, so then Dalinar would come in all high and mighty to fix things and also end up without a head.

Lol I love GRRM, he has a way of writing that no other fantasy author can recreate. His books are dunked in realism and set alight, so that all characters slowly burn. It is awesome, but thank the Almighty this doesn't happen in WoK. Books can get depressing when cool characters die. I dont want that to happen here.  :(
...Because Brandon Sanderson doesn't kill off cool characters?

Kelsier, Vin, Elend, Clubs, Hrathen, and Lightsong would like a word with you.

Vin, Elend and Lightsong die at the end of the book and are usually wrapped up in a way that is usually very comforting, like there better off. Ned dies near the end of the first book with seven to go, seven long long books, and he is not the only cool character to die so early in the series. With the exception of pretty much Kelsier, all Brandon's characters die at the end, and there deaths feel like they meant something.

Sorry but when Ned died I was like, well he didn't really get much done. They killed him as soon as he tried to do something.

But this is all besides the point. Both authors are fantastic. Both having amazing books. But I wouldn't want GRRM to write Brandon's books and vice-versa.

Do we really know enough about the parshendi to judge whether they are motivated by hate? Everything they have done is clouded in mystery, making it hard to discern their true motives.
We know how they act.

Either they're not motivated by hate, or their definition of "hate" is very different from ours.

How would you define assassinating Gavilar? It is not too much of a stretch to say he was killed because of hate. He have no idea what there motives behind that move was. How about declaring war? War is usually driven by hate. What's there motive behind the war? we just dont know. It could very well be hate.

I don't think Szeth will kill Dalinar. I heard somewhere that Brandon is plaining for Dalinar to be the main PoV character for one of the books, and his still unsure of whether it will be the second or third book, which means he obviously hasn't planned for Dalinar to die anytime soon. Even if he was the main character of the second book, if Szeth killed him he would be dead in the prologue, which wouldnt make much of a story lol.

My next question is, what do you do for a living? You sound like some of the linguistics researchers I work with at the BYU English Language Center. (I'm just a webmonkey, so most of their work goes over my head. My consolation is that my work goes over their heads, too. ;))

ROFL. You better watch out, or some Parshendi and Alethians might end up cutting out your gemheart.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Rights For Spren!!!! (minor spoilers)
« on: September 21, 2010, 05:45:59 AM »
If spren are captive in the jewels, what happens when they break? Do the spren die? I dont think we can go through with this untill we know all the facts

I have already read a theory which postulates that the spren that follow Shallan (honestspren?) may have come from here father's destroyed soulcaster. So it may be possible. Of course if this is the case, we must immediately set out destroying fabriels. We must show these lighteyed Alethi noblemen that we are serious about freedom for spren!

Heh, I was trying my hand at being an evil corporate lawyer. I got that this was supposed to be light-hearted, and I was trying to disagree while playing along.

That statement wasn't directed at anyone in specific. I just wanted to make sure that people who visited this post didn't think we were crazy people that believed that Roshar and spren actually exist, and would actually play along. When I read your post I was like lol this person knows exactly what I'm doing.

I just really want to see the spren rebel. They are obviously pivotal to the functioning of Roshar, and the conduit of the Knight Radiants powers. Its just not right that such carefree and powerful spirits should be imprisoned so some egotistical bastard lighteyes can have his dinner cooked for him without using a fire.

(P.S. this post is meant to be some light humour as well as a place that people can post theories about different spren. Don't take it too seriously, but please don't be afraid to play along ;))

Brandon Sanderson / Re: WoK: Shalan - near end of book **SPOILERS**
« on: September 21, 2010, 05:17:55 AM »
Now that we know from the Navani translation page that spren are trapped in Soulcasters, what if the reason that Shallan attracted the transforming spren was because she freed it/them from the Soulcaster by accidentally breaking it?

I never thought of that, but it could be possible. I think the spren are honesty spren (they search for truth). Note how honesty is the second divine attribute for the 6-shash essence, which is probably the order of knights radiant that Shallan would be attached to. The people of that essence exhibit the primary divine attribute of creativity. So while the honesty spren might search for honesty, they can still be attracted to those with creative abilities.

Or perhaps "binding" them is what changed the Parshendi into the Parshmen.

Then what would happen if you bonded a creature mortal? (i.e. human)
You get a Surgebinder?

That would mean that the bonds where different, because one comes from the Almighty while the other comes from Odium. (assuming that the voidbringers come from Odium).

I think its awesome. Not only creating the language, but also deciphering. Harakeke you are amazing. You make it sound so simple, yet I would have no idea where to start.

P.S. Sorry Peter, didn't mean to leave you out before. I think its definitely a work of art.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: WoK: The Heralds *Spoilers*
« on: September 21, 2010, 05:04:48 AM »
that doesnt explain the parshendi, but it is a really good idea, and i have been hoping that all of the heralds are still around, i was actually hoping that the interlude characters were the heralds, or some of them were.

The parshendi are just those parshman that have already been activiated into 'voidbringer' mode. Taln may have given up years ago, but it may have taken years for him to finally manifest on Roshar. I have a theory on another post which pretty much says that the strange things that people are saying when they're about to die are related to Taln's soul trying to get back on Roshar. Notice how alot of the quotes somehow focus on Taln or the heralds. Since these events started happening the same time the parshendi appeared, this might be when Taln finally broke under the torture and tried to escape/return to Roshar.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Language of Dalinar's gibberish?
« on: September 21, 2010, 05:00:06 AM »
then would it stand to reason that Sel is the original planet where Adonlasiumcreated humans?

I dont think we have proof yet that the language does come from Sel. And maybe the people from Sel are also migrants from the original planet, and also brought the language with them like the people on Roshar.

I'm actually pretty certain that Szeth has an honorspren, but that it doesn't hang around much because of the terrible way that he is forced to use his powers.  He is honorable, but that's about it.  Kind of like how Kaladin los Syl (but not his powers!) while he was slaughtering the Parshendi.

My theory is that Szeth's oathstone is a type of fabriel that has a spren imprisoned in it that allows him to use the lashings. But its not perfect, which is why he must always honour his oath.
