I know of a symbol. It is called 'cthulhu'.

But then, that is my answer to everything.

I do this a bit. That said, all of my friends in high school were pretty un-geeky. No roleplaying for me :( But then, now i talk all the time to the people i roleplay with and play computer games with, but rarely talk to the high school friends i had. We just never had that much in common - they liked sport, or we spent all our time amusing ourselves argueing (he was communist, i'm, uh, not). Or we just talked about other stuff. But geek stuff is just more interesting to me :)

As for finding geeks out, I could never do it. But I don't have to bother - there is large wargaming and roleplaying societies in my town. Both have about 30+ members. It's not an issue :)
If you're ever in an argument and Entropy winds up looking staid and temperate in comparison, it might be time to cut your losses and start a new thread about something else :)

ok, Entropy, you're missing something with that. Not only do they have to not understand it, but they have to not think it's consequential. Cthulu makes you stand out like the guy with taped glasses at a frat house.

I say dice. Just keep a polyheral around. If you suspect someone may be a geek, just put it where it can be seen. The disadvantage is taunts from people who think that polyhedral dice means you're into "That freaky devil-worshiipping D&D stuff" but that's not much of a problem anymore.

There certainly needs to be a geek symbol - I know all about it, given i think the geeks of the world must unite. The problem is people won't start using it until everybody already uses it. Dice already identify, so yeah.

You could also carry a CCG deck, and that has the advantage of being able to play if someone else happens to, but it's more of a giveaway. Dice could possibly have another purpose.

Yeah, uh, I am confused to why you don't just say, "Hey, into D&D?  No?  How's work?  Good.  That's good.  You know, I just creamed some chump at Magic.  Magic is stupid?  Hey, you know what, I am gonna go talk to that guy because we have nothing in common..."

because it's like, a joke. Let me explain this humor thing...

seriously, because in the office, you have to see these people every day. EVERY day. and it's not just going to be over in a few months when we have summer break and then get whole new class mates. So you need to not appear as the freak, so your life does not become unnecessarily complicated.

Well,
A) It's a joke for us too.
B) We have the same classmates throughout school

Just because somebody's mommy put too much sugar in their cereal this morning doesn't mean you have to go to EVERY THREAD and post in the middle of an actual conversation with a nonsensical reply.

Speaking of friends, how're you looking for Worldcon, Ookla?  I'm having trouble finding anyone to share a hotel room with....

I was seriously entertaining the idea of considering to plan on going, but I'm afraid I just plain don't have the cash. While I am finally working now, the pay schedule means I get paid for work I finish 90 days after I submit my invoice. I won't be able to save up for it, and I've used too much credit at this point already.

If there were any way I could pull it off I would be thrilled to go, but I'm afraid it's just not going to work.
