All conventions/symposiums are hit-and-miss. You can never be guaranteed that the panel will tell you what you want to find out. Still, most are interesting and if you are just willing to learn stuff, wether it is useful or not, then you can usually have a good time.

But I do agree that it would be nice if people submitted questions to panels before the panel started, but that is whole logistics issue that I'm sure few organizers care to address. It can also make the whole production seem over-staged.
