Dan Wells / Re: Is it just me, or can March 30th not come fast enough?
« on: April 09, 2010, 01:57:11 AM »
I find it vastly amusing that none of the major bookstores in my area have copies of the book, given how long I've been waiting for it. I'll just have to do a site-to-store kind of transaction and hope it arrives soon.

They did an excellent job with this! It makes me pine for March 30th that much more...

Writing Group / Re: How do you outline?
« on: January 18, 2010, 12:55:15 AM »
I've tried outlining in the past but it really doesn't work for me. Eventually, I found that I'm a discovery writer and that my first draft is going to be a mish-mash of suckage that will need to be heavily revised later.

The closest I ever get to outlining is in a 'brief overview' style. I'll try to write the story as if I was telling a friend what was going to happen in as few words as possible. Usually this is two pages worth or less, and it is not set in stone. Whenever I find myself stuck I look at those two pages and decide what to do next. Sometimes I get an idea and other times I simply write a later chapter with the knowledge that I will come back and fill in the holes at a later date.

Writing Group / Re: My Book is Overwhelming Me
« on: January 16, 2010, 02:59:17 PM »
I felt the same way after I finished "The Well of Ascension" by Brandon Sanderson, Cynic. After reading the final chapter I stopped writing for two weeks because I was absolutely certain I could never match an ending as good as the one Sanderson wrote.

So during those two weeks I picked up "The Name of the Wind" by Patrick Rothfuss and got my mojo back. I'd never tried writing 1st person before and I was sure I could write something nearly as good as what Rothfuss had done in his first book. 60 pages of 1st person writing has been more difficult than I thought, but I think the book is good and it has me mildly excited about finishing it, even if it never sees its way onto a bookshelf.

Now I'm plowing forward and feeling much better about my future prospects... even after reading a few more Sanderson books. I'm trying to use them as tools for learning instead of freaking out about someone who has more experience than I do.

That is hysterical.

My grandmother loves to read, perhaps I should introduce her to Dan Sanderson and Brandon Wells...

Well I'm glad I get the whole story faster, at least. I've had these books on my radar for a while now... it will be good to have them on my shelf sooner than later!

The release schedule has been sped up? Does this mean I get to enjoy I Am Not a Serial Killer before March?

*crosses fingers*

So long as the content is as good as I think it is going to be, I'll take a cover that is merely okay.

After all, it's not like Dan is trying to publish Mary Shelly fanfic...

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Way of the Kings
« on: November 29, 2009, 11:10:31 PM »

That could be either amazing for EUOL or terrible.  If he lives up to it, it will be amazing.  If he doesn't, then it could really stick a wrench in TOR's and even EUOL's gears.

Something that aloof is very . . . sketchy.  I am confident in his writing, but that's a LOT to say.

I'm pretty confident Brandon has the chops to do it. I think how well he picked up the WoT is a good indication. :)

edit: Something that aloof? You think Brandon's new idea is distant and uncaring? ;)

I agree with you there, Ari. Listening to Writing Excuses and reading four Sanderson books over the past 6 months has lead me to believe this is a writer I need to follow for a long time to come. Way of Kings is one of a very select few books that I am antsy at getting in my grubby hands.

I get to wait this out in Rhode Island-- meaning that I can get the book on time but securing Mr. Wells signature and shaking his hand will take much longer.

Why do so many of my favorite new authors come out of Utah? This is so inconvenient...  ;)

I wish I was there... *sigh*

Hopefully someone is putting Dan's appearances up on YouTube. I can use those to tide me over until I go next year!

I think that's all that needs to be said. As one of the many who is eagerly anticipating Dan's book here in the US, I keep trying to tell myself that six months will fly by fast... but I doubt they will go fast enough.
