Rants and Stuff / Re: These Stupid Titles VIII
« on: December 17, 2008, 04:11:15 AM »
Hmm... it seems i leveled up with that post. Now im an ink dryer. Not as bad as my other title which i cant remember/ never bothered to look at  ;D. I like that emote. An emote is different frome an emo. And emos are different from emus (flightless bird), and Elmo (red freaky tv character)(too many adjectives). There arent any threads on video games i actually have. (all on WoW and stuff). Another rant finished.

I STILL HATE MY OLD TITLE!!!

Maybe i'll look and then double post.

 Or maybe i wont.

Or maybe I will.

Or wont.

I probably will. I'm feeling scitzophrenic. My aunt is. Is it genetic? I want pie.

Or cake.

Or pie.

OR BOTH

Hmm. Maybe ive been reading too much mistborn, but now it seems like something is in my head. Besides my brain. And other head stuff. I wonder if i have cheese in my head. It would be head cheese. *all puns intended*

I HAVE THE RIGHT TO AN ATTORNEY!!!

*finishes epically long rant*

Brandon Sanderson / Re: What MB character are you and why?
« on: December 17, 2008, 03:48:33 AM »
Wasing the what of the where? (just thought id add a bit of meaningless eastern street dialogue  ;D)

I would probably pick Sazed or Elend, Sazed as a first choice. I'm more of a scholar, and like finding new information on subjects im interested in, and sharing it with others. I'm probably less (much, much less) of a warrior than Elend *becomes*, so if i had a power like Sazed had, I would only use it in times of dire need, so i could relate to Sazed more than Elend. Except i'm not a feruchemist. Or a (*SPOILER!!!!!*) god. and i'm definitely not a eunuch. Ive checked  ;D.

I voted for allomancy, partly because i know the most about it. I'm now thinking i would change it to Talents. It would be awesome to have an excuse for being late and stuff! ;D

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Hoid??
« on: December 14, 2008, 05:51:59 PM »
Wow, it's been a long time since I looked at this thread. It's also been a while since Brandon explained his Unified Brandon Sanderson Metaverse Theory, but from what I remember...

Elantris, Dragonsteel, and Mistborn take place on different worlds, though they are in the same universe.
Hoid is the same person in all the books. It's not a title or group or anything, it's actually the same guy.

How could it be the same person? I remember someone saying (either in this thread or the mistborn spoiler thread) that somebody named Hoid dies in the beginning of Liar of Partinel.

Yomen said that silver is one of those metals that allomancers didn't really like, or something along those lines, as Vin was surrounded by silver when she was a captive. I think.

Well, of course.  That's because it's useless...or deadly.
He he... I wonder how many mistborn died testing new metals/alloys.

Anyway, thanks for the pic of the metals table Raphael (now i can finally recreate my own  ;))

Here's a bigger cover picture:

http://www.thescifibookstore.com/fantasy_16209_0765356147_The-Hero-of-Ages-Book-Three-of-Mistborn.html

Ruggedly handsome? (I can't tell. I'm a guy.)

I like the black/white contrast, though it might have been more impressive with Vin in her black ball gown.

Yeah, I think the ball scene with the color contrast would have been more impressive.

I'm wondering what Brandon meant by that scene.  With preservation=white and ruin=black, and with the two powers only being whole when they work together, I imagine you could go in some fairly creative directions trying to interpret it.  Some of them might actually be coherent, although I've read enough literary criticism to not trust it.  It just seems too obvious to say that Vin destroyed the old Empire and Elend salvaged something out of them to create a better world, thus providing an extended analogy for the whole series...

But I really don't trust a lot of literary criticism.  I think I'll stop here.

Antithesis is fun.  ;D

By the way, I like the cover a lot.  The difference in height just popped out the second I saw it.

that is most definitly not how i pictured elend would look. infact....has anyone seen stardust? The actor who played Tristran in stardust would make a good elend i think. He can be pretty nerdy, but their is also a hardness to him...

They are before and after pictures of what elend might have looked like before the epic and at the very end.

P.S Stardust (written by Neil Gaiman) is a really good book, and not too bad of a movie.
I personally like the hardback of HoA, where Vin is fighting the Inquisitors. The paperback covers seem... rushed (i only own the FE paperback, but i've seen the pictures for the WoA and that HoA picture). I see what you mean about the whole Ruin=black, Preservation=white thing, but i just think the art looks better on the hardbacks. But thats just my opinion  ;)

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Best Mistborn Fight Scene *SPOILERS*
« on: December 11, 2008, 05:32:31 AM »
I voted for the last stand Elend with atium vs. koloss/marsh, purely because it would be so cool, first time with the most powerful metal, and a near unlimited amount. Now that i think about it, the Kelsier vs. Inquisitor fight was probably my favorite, because he did what seemed impossible. I was kind of sad when he died, though. :(

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Hoid??
« on: December 10, 2008, 05:02:25 AM »
"Castle in the Air" was almost as good, but I doubt we'll see an anime version of that because the title is way too close to that of another Miyazaki film, which is inspired by (but not based on) Gulliver's Travels.

Hey, i have the dvd of "Castle in the Air", but i lost the disc. :'(

Anyway... i also think that Hoid is a title. Unless Brandon is a fan of that Homeward Bounder book and decided to add an obscure easter egg that almost nobody would understand.

Not to open old wounds, but the Earth doesnt have a perfectly straight axis. Scadrial could be tilted on its axis and still have normal solar and lunar cycles (seasons, days & nights, etc.). Rashek also could have tilted/moved the planet so that the sun burned away the mist (as it says in one of the epigraphs), and then made it so there was a planetary bulge (or some other geographical or astronomical anomaly) to make there be days and nights that were somewhat normal.

I'm also pretty sure the kandra do have two spikes, of either iron (potency), tin (awareness), zinc (stability) or copper (presence). That being said, if the Lord Ruler used two spikes of different metals, he could have had kandra hybrids, or maybe even kandra mistings/mistborn (heh, they would literally be born in and of the mist  ;D).

I also have some questions: 1:If mistborn granted powers from lerasium can control koloss/hemalurgically spiked creatures without duralumin, than why did Elend need to use it?
2:And couldnt Sazed, being partly of Preservation, create more Lerasium when the allomancy bloodlines grew weak?

Okay, this may have been answered before, but do metals used for feruchemy and hemalurgy need to have the same combination of metals as allomantic ones? If so, how would weapons-grade steel be used for Spook's hemalurgical spiking?
