Naming Another Book
« on: August 19, 2004, 03:44:28 PM »
So, I've begun preliminary work on the MISTBORN sequel, and I'm kicking around ideas for a title.  What do you guys think of the following:

Mistborn:
The Well of Ascension

Mistborn:
The Final Hero

I like them both, though I like the first a little better.  "The Well of Ascension" just sounds like a fantasy book title.  However, "The Final Hero" has a nice little cohesive ring with the first book, which was named "The Final Empire."

I like "The Well of Ascension" better because it sounds more interesting to me.

Plus, after reading the first book, I'm very interested in what happened/is happening with the Well of Ascension. This title would catch my interest right away because I already know that I want to know what happens with the well, whereas I don't really know who the final hero is just by seeing the title.

hmmm...I hope this makes sense--it did in my head, but doesn't as much on the screen...

I like Well, of these two choices.

I like The Final Hero better, it makes it seem more epic to me. It also implies that the hero has a lot to overcome as he is alone as a hero. If you are planning to make it a trilogy though, I would save it until the last book as it gives it a last stand feel to it, and having it as the second book would be anticlimactic.

I like The Final Hero better, although that would probably require the next book to be the Final Something as well.  The other title seems to be a little too... "Harry Potter and the Well of Ascension."

I like the first one. I like trilogies that aren't code-named within each other.

I like the Well one. I like the parallelism of the Final Hero, but that requires you to keep that parallel all the way through the series. Do you have more Final things besides the Final Empire and Final Hero?

Is the whole book a prequel? That's what "the final hero" makes me think.

I can reveal no secrets about my plots!  However, it's NOT a prequel.

I'm probably going with Well of Ascension.  Everyone will probably just call it MISTBORN 2, though.  Mistborn works so well as a snappy title that I can see it dominating the actual book titles.

I like the Well one better. It is little Harry Potter-ish, but Harry Potter sure as heck isn't doing poorly in sells.

The Final Hero reminds me of too many over-dramatic and ultimately cheesy works. Most notibly, the terrible moive, "Last Action Hero" and the awful song, "The Final Countdown." It makes me think your book will be a combination of the two and therefor should be burned.

Which reminds me, 42.  My editor wants some preliminary sketches of Aons by Monday.  Any chance that if I sketched them out, then emailed them to you tonight, you would have time to snaz them up a bit this weekend?

I personaly think

MISTBORN:
House of Mustard

would sound realy cool.  Maybe you can convince the DUNE author that like your book so much that there should be a House of Mustard mentioned in the next book?

Hrm. Final Hero is too David Gemmell. Well of Ascension makes me think of Warcraft 3. Neither is that brilliant in my enlightened, omniscient, divine, unfallable opinion.
