Genre schmonra.
« on: June 21, 2004, 07:58:34 AM »
So besides a basic fantasy world, what genres in roleplaying do people like.
Pirates
Horror
Cowboys
Cyberpunks
Supers
Modern
Tolkien (a genre unto itself in my mind)
Two fisted pulp action
Roaring 20's
Kung Fu

or something else entirely....

What would you like to see in a roleplaying game?

Just Curious.

Cyberpunk
Future

Basically anything modern/futuristic is what I like. I kind of grew out of fantasy games.

Epic Fantasy
Cyberpunk (I've developed a real liking to the genre, since it suits me)
Space Opera
Modern day (in the style of Hard Boiled and Max Payne)
Anime (Exalted! Exalted!)
Anything that has a lot of mood pleases me more than hardcore statting. I enjoy stats, thus my liking of GURPs, but a health dose of mood in an RPG is my heroin.

I've proved amicable to WW2 and Superhero's before.

If you're ever in an argument and Entropy winds up looking staid and temperate in comparison, it might be time to cut your losses and start a new thread about something else :)

Outside of basic fantasy, I prefer supers. Course, I also like historical stuff, though I have no preference for any particular time period.

It's not that I don't like it, it's just that I think I got overloaded trying to do a fantasy Vampire RPG, Warhammer Fantasy, D&D, and read the Drizzt series all at once. I wanted a little variety so I started playing some cyberpunk stuff last year, and I got really interested in it.

Our lack of participation in fantasy genres and all participation in future genres probably didn't help, either, Onion.

I, like Onion, like futuristic RPGs and Tabletops.  Just myh style, I guess.

I hardly ever play RPGs, but I prefer games with guns.  That's just me.

It should come as no surprise that I love Tolkien games.  I am also a huge fan of games that have a real feel for the pulp action stories.  Superheroics is also big with me, but it is really hard to do it right.

One genre that is always overlooked, yet one of my favorites, is humor.  Paranoia, Hunter Planet, Attack of the Humans, Supermegatopia, Hol, Ninja Burger, Kobolds Ate My Baby, Star Munchkin, and of course, Toon.  If you have never played any of the games on this list, you don't know what you are missing.  Humor is essential in ALL rpg's.  Far too many people just take the hobby waaaay too seriously.

CP. As you may have guessed.

Anything that isn't Fantasy. Fantasy needs to be REALLY good before I like it (applies to literature also).

That and strange experamental things I've invented myself that challange the very idea of what roleplaying is and don't actually work.

I'm currently working on a Penny Arcade RPG....

I don't play basic fantasy. I like highly developed unique fantasy settings.

After that, probably supers.

SF tends to annoy me quickly
