Books / Used Books
« on: November 28, 2004, 10:44:43 PM »
So there are some books in the Hotel's Lost and Found that I might just acquire for myself. They were left there about 4 or 5 months ago.

The books are:
Attraction: Forecasting Battle Casualties and Equipment Losses in MOdern War
Army Officer's Guide 45th ed.
Soldier's Manual of Common Tasks: Skill Level 1
English for Military Leaders

So worthwhile reference material or shelf warmers?

Rants and Stuff / Christmas shopping
« on: November 25, 2004, 11:56:17 AM »
Thanks to Amazon.com, I am now done with the bulk of my Christmas shopping. I'm so glad that in our modern society, shopping can be done without actually having to physically go to a store. Having to interact with other people is just barbaric.

Rants and Stuff / tightwads
« on: November 25, 2004, 01:22:21 AM »
I've decided I hate working for tightwads. Mostly, this would be the potential customers who call me.

I can understand people having a budget that they have to work with, but tightwads are something else.

Tightwads for some arrogant reason think they know what everything should cost. Not what is does cost, but what in their delusional minds what things should cost, no matter what the item or service is. This includes some mystical, unknown understanding of inflation, labor costs and material costs. And surprisingly, almost everything is higher than what they think it should cost. So they harass poor customer service workers and managers to get the price they think something should cost and not what the people who produce the product or service say it costs.

I think I will petition for the tightwad complex to be punishable.

So, January 14th is the release date. Saw the trailer for it in front of National Treasure.

It looks really cool. They've taken the Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon/Hero approach to the cinematography, which I like.

And I like Jenifer Garner, even if she does need to eat a few dozen Big Macs.

Suggestions Box / The Corner
« on: November 19, 2004, 04:48:56 AM »
So when is someone else going to be put in the corner?

Stacer has been there for a long time now.
I'll nominate myself to go in the corner. I need a place to start building my doomsday device.

Writing Group / What next?

Okay, so I'm trying to decide how I should handle an escape scene in my NaNo.

My characters are imprisoned and have the means to escape, but are really too incompetent of successfully pulling it off. So how should I handle this?

I think something good needs to happen to the characters, but I'm not sure if escaping from prison is the right good thing to happen.

Now this could be considered an abuse of the eco-system, right?

The squid was probably jsut an innocent by-stander. The beavers have to be co-conspirators.

Role-Playing Games / Puzzles and Problem-solving
« on: November 16, 2004, 05:32:11 AM »
So I want to integrate more puzzles and problem-solving stuff into my campaign sessions for my blood-thirsty combat oriented players.

So what have been some fun puzzles/games that people on the board have done in your RPG groups?

Everything Else / What you wish you were eating
« on: November 15, 2004, 03:30:28 PM »
Maybe because the holidays are coming, but I find myself thinking about food more.

Course, my budget and actual time to cook is limited. So present the "What you wish you were eating" thread.

feel free to post recipes, pics of food, or just reminence about food gone by.

For me, I've been craving a good sandwich lately.
I've been missing eating a good Francesinha (http://www.petiscos.com/receita.php4?recid=591&catid=6). And I want to try a cuban (http://www.foodnetwork.com/food/recipes/recipe/0,,FOOD_9936_11911,00.html) and a muffulatta (http://www.foodnetwork.com/food/recipes/recipe/0,,FOOD_9936_26449,00.html).

And I'm dying for some good bacalhau com natas (http://www.petiscos.com/receita.php4?recid=256&catid=10).

Movies and TV / Revenge of the Sith

Just saw the trailer.

It looked cool, yet I'm distrustful after being let down twice previosly.
It's like, oh look how cool.
Then I think about it a later and I realized I was mislead.
Yet I keep letting SW back into my life.
It's such an abusive relationship, but maybe SW deserves one more chance.

Movies and TV / Madagascar

So I just saw a preview for this. It's one of dreamworks next animated projects.

Just one thing to say: HOMICIDAL PENGUINS!

Movies and TV / The Incredibles
« on: November 05, 2004, 04:49:59 PM »
This is a ultra-cool movie.

It's just a lot of fun and it shows Pixar brancing out a bit.
Yes the animation style is still very Pixar-like but it shows hints of the Square-Soft style in some of the scenery and F/Xs. It's great fun.

It is violent in parts, like Tom and Jerry violent. There are some extra/red-shirt characters that die.

It also has many great lines.

Writing Group / Writing and Neurosis
« on: October 28, 2004, 06:55:08 PM »
So one of the panels I walked into at MileHiCon was about mental illness and art. The panel had like ten panel members and the room was full.

All of the panel members suffered from depression or some sort of mental illness. All also were successful writers or artists working full-time.

So the panel's conclusion about mental illness and writing--if you don't have a mental illness than your writing must be subpar at best. Also if you are happy, then your writing is lacking.

I left the discussion early because I thought it wasn't worth listening to their whining.

So what is everyone's ideas on this?

Everything Else / MileHiCon
« on: October 26, 2004, 08:48:15 AM »
So I've returned from spending the weekend at MileHiCon in Denver. My being there was kind of a spontaneous fluke, but the it's actually a rather cool little con. Well, I estimate there were about 1800 people attending, I think that's still a small con.

Anyways, it helped me feel better about having lost my computer. Just haw can you feel bad when you walk by the hotel bar at 10 pm and see Kevin J Anderson talking with a bunch of Klingons?

And any con where they provide food for the attendees as part of their registration is good. When there are like 12 or so different things happening at once, who has time to go out to eat?

I'll post more later.

Movies and TV / Peacekeeper Wars
« on: October 18, 2004, 12:18:57 AM »
Well, I just finished my Farscape: Peacekeeper Wars party, part one. It was cool.

Like all of Farscape it was wierd, demented, slightly disturbing, and perfect for people with ADHD. Can't wait for part two in 22 hours.
