Absolutely, especially if you paid for yourself to come out.

Ah, wait, I may be speaking too soon.  I haven't been involved with LTUE since I chaired the committee. (shudder and live in a cave for six months, ok I feel better now)  But when I was involved they would have loved a panelist on such a subject and, even better, would have loved a presenter on the subject, since having a presenter means you don't have to coordinate more than one person to be at one place at the same time.  It's easier.

I have no contact information for anyone involved now but I'll bet EUOL does or could get some easier than I could.

How about it EUOL?

42 had a very salient point.  Drop the perfectionism (easier said than done I'm sure)  Be confident (arrogant) enough to write and finish stuff that is not perfect and doesn't live up to your standards with the belief that you'll get better as you work at it.  You will.  I swear.

If you're really helped by writing then you've got no problems, that's reason enough to do it even if no one ever reads it.  If you want to be read, start sending your stuff around.  If you want help improving, then ask the people that read your stuff to talk to you about it.

So in the end you must be arrogant enough to write the stuff down in the first place and humble enough to let other people see it even when you know it aint perfect.  Perhaps this is the confidence SE is talking about?

Good heavens!  Relax already!  I only missed a job as a reviewer at a newspaper because that one sentence was kind of lame.  No big deal.  I'll just tell my wife NO on that medicine for our baby because I don't have a job yet.  Easy fix.

I read Archon's reply and agree totally.  I would add some things.

Your goal in writing can't be to get published.  I'm not saying that getting published is selling out or that people who write can't want to get published.  But if it's you're only reason for writing then chances are no one wants to read what you're writing.  Which brings me to my next point.  You have to be arrogant to write.  The whole point of writing as opposed to just thinking is to preserve what you create.  Only arrogant people believe that what they think is worthy of preservation.

Finally, there is a difference between people who have specific stories they want to tell and people who want to tell stories.  The mechanics behind the writing of each type of writer is very different.  Which are you?

So, I'm in a non-fiction phase for the next year. (well, it's been a few months so only until next May.)  Is there a place to post reviews of non-fiction books? I've found some good ones and would like to hear of others.

But, then, is this site the proper forum?

Perhaps I am wrong, it's been a while since I read anything on the matter, but didn't the Normans sale up that river there in France, conquer pillage and farm?

Three cheers for the Vikings!  I love to point out that vikings are still ruling the world.

Vikings rape and pillage and farm in England, eventually merging into and dominating the society and culture.  The "NORMANS" (Northman) come from where they took over france and conquer England, double viking shot into that population, then Britain rules the world for a while, in the course of which a bunch of brits come and colonize America (with others, but who's in charge now?)  And now America sits alone at the top of the heap.  Woohoo.  How nice it is to have a name like Skarstedt.

Incidentally I have relatives who live in Denmark and it's apparently accepted by the Danes, Swedes and the Norse that all the bad apples left those countries long ago.  Bad apples being, of course, people who don't think having a tax imposed on males for bing male is a good idea.

I can't tell you what it is then, Archon.  But I can tell you, with certainty, it is not the genetic modifications.

I admit to being very curious  how one can state with such certainty that genetic modifications do not change the taste of fruit.  At first glance it is not obvious to me that it wouldn't.

Curious not confrontational.
