Title: musical complaints
Post by: The Holy Saint, Grand High Poobah, Master of Monkeys, Ehlers on April 11, 2005, 05:39:06 PM
I have to say that there is very little more annoying than a muzak version of "Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head."

I was in Wal-mart the other day and we were walking past a display with CDs and they had a version of sk8ter boy (Avril Lavigne) except it was some wacked out, badly sung version by a group of girls. I couldn't imagine anyone would buy it. It was horrible. What's up with that?

It was probably Kid Pop, or whatever unholy kid-version crap they advertise on the Disney Channel all the time. Personally, I can't imagine anyone buying Avril Lavigne at all, no matter who's singing it.

It's too bad that Fell beat me to it, but I'll second the motion:  any version of Sk8ter Boi, including the original, is whacked out and badly sung.  That's not a song you can ruin, because it's already as bad as it can get.

Trust me, there's bad and then there's worse and this was definitely worse.

which says so much about you.

On top of that, I had another muzak experience: Muzak version of "The Wind Cried Mary."

*shudder*

The music that pipes away in malls, elevators, the brains of middle managers.

yeah, where they do toned down keyboard and fake string, sometimes flute, versions of songs to make them easily digestible for the plebian audience in grocery stores. Often used for hold music.

You have never suffered until you've gone 8 months straight with the only song you hear being the Titanic Theme song by Celine Dion.  When I lived in Japan every store would play versions of it, muzak, origianl, many differenet dance mixes, for over 8 months! 8 months!  I couldn't go into a supermarket without hearing that song, you may think I'm exagerateing but I;m not, Titanic was in Japanese movie theaters for almost a year.

There's nothing foreigners like better than to watch rich Americans die.

I like Foreigner. Pretty cool. And I say that Tage and Avril can hang out with me anytime.

I think liking Foreigner belongs in the "shameful music listening" thread.

So far we've talked about Muzak, Avril Lavigne, Foreigner, and "My Heart Will Go On." This is the shameful music listening thread.

the difference is complaints are about music you're forced into listening to. Shameful listening is music you listen to on purpose.

What you call Muzak I call "Elevator Music", I think.

Unless I'm really missing a link, here.

But yeah, I generally agree with you all.  I like some stuff I call New Age, but I can't stand the squishy elevator New Age stuff you find a lot (and it irks me to no small end when it pretends to be Celtic).

I prefer stuff like Deep Forest and Loreena McKennitt.

In other music complaints, I just want to say that listening to Punk for more than 5 minutes a day gives me headaches.  The genre really bothers me.  And so do a lot of related genres.

I hope I haven't offended too many people by saying that.

Why would we be offended by the fact that you're wrong?

just kidding. Punk can be very hit or miss.

anyway, yes, you're right about "elevator music" too, but Muzak is actually what the industry calls it. At least what they used to in America. It has such a bad name that they probably have a new term for it.

Muzak isn't a term -- it's a brand.  There's a Muzak company that produces alot of that stuff.  They used to have a branch here in Utah, but I don't know if they do anymore.

Another brand, that I actually hate worse, is called 101 Strings.  I heard them cover a Paula Abdul song once, and it was pretty stinking awful.

I can handle Muzak and 101 Strings as long as I don't pay attention to it, but when I happen to hear that they're doing a light, violin-y version of a rock or heavy metal song (which, yes, they do) it drives me bananas.

Whenever I read that comment by Fell it makes me think about breathing, thus creating the irritating 'one more thing to think about' result.

Fell: Breathe.

Is that different from "They Call the Wind Moriah"?

I'm thinking very much probably. Unless "They Call the Wind Moriah" is a cover of a Jimmy Hendrix tune.

You want to talk about murder on the ear drums try this!  Muzak's version of 'Enter Sandmand' by Metallica or 'Awake' by Godsmack.

They've spent the last several years building up an immunity to Iocain powder. You'll have to do better than that.
