Title: Wasting Time at Work
Post by: The Holy Saint, Grand High Poobah, Master of Monkeys, Ehlers on April 29, 2003, 06:23:40 PM
... is not right.

Is wrong if it's not MY choice of time wasting.

I just spent 5 hours realizing I don't really want to be in IT support for a company. I was running queries and macros in Access. The SAME queries and macros. For five hour. Each took between 10-20 minutes to run.

Granted, they were on different data tables, but they were all from the same two databases and followed the exact same procedure. Then I pasted some info into Excel.

Yes, it was in ACCESS.

Call me crazy, or tell me if I'm wrong, since I have little experience with this, but could we have just set up a cron job or a Perl script to run this from a Unix machine and had it do all the work without making a human being stare at a screen all day?

Sigh. Well, that's my rant. I'll make up for it by spending the evening reading RPG books between phone calls.

Start a game store. Some columns up over at RPG.net are all about that.

So I can be the fat, obnoxious guy everyone complains about? Sorry, no thanks. Also, I don't know if i believe there's a big opening for that.

Besides, I'm already fat and obnoxious, I don't need everyone complaining about me.

Why are you working there if you think it's boring? Or was it just that day that was boring...

Hey!  I like the fat annoying guy!  He supplies me with gaming tools I need to not be bored to death!

And yes, you should not have had to look at a screen all day.  Boo hoo.  I have to stare a chalkboard 6 hours a day, everyday, and I can't even listen to music or anything.  All you need to do is pump on some rolling stones and you're good to go for five hours of underworldish pain... :P

That rant was posted about a year ago. Since then he's gotten a new job.

And you'll quickly learn once you're in the working world that sometimes you have to work somewhere you don't like simply because you need the money and no one else is hiring. Go watch Joe vs. the Volcano. That's how I feel about work sometimes. And any job you get will have times like that, whether you enjoy it most of the time or not.

Yup, Jobs, like school, are required and not meant to be fun.  If you find a fun job LUCKY YOU!

Thats the key, though, you gotta find a job you like that pays well. That's true success...

Joe Versus the Volcano is one of the coolest movies EVER. EVAR! But yeah, that kind of sums it up. you gotta do what you gotta do, then you get trapped, and you fail to notice when there are new options. Fortunately, I found another option, which is much better

So, I was browsing your misc folder so I could show my husband a picture of you, and got to look at a lot of pictures of your girls. They are very, very cute.

Dreadfully sorry, sarcasm is the flavor of the day.  Please, go on.

Uh, that was not sarcastic. I know this, since i use sarcasm a lot IRL.

Someone coming into macdonalds and asking "can i buy a burger" and getting the response "No, we decided to stop selling them and now sell only low fat salads" is on the recieving end of sarcasm.

What you did was merely being rude.

Wait a minuite, the guy that walks into Mc.Donalds is NOT on the recieving end of sarcasm.  There is a nationwide test going on in some country noones ever heard of where they do just that.

No, it was not real, it was just the result of you're late night party-ing last night...

MoD, please tell me you did NOT show him the veryscaryeric.jpg....

and thanks. I thinkthey're cute too. We need to video tape Rachael playing with my mom's dog. The dog licks her ear, and she goes into convulsions of laughter. It's cute to the point of making bitter people like Entropy explode.

since this thread has been resurrected anyway.

Here's what I did between reading comics and editing articles for TWG.

We have these boxes that hold ceramic/metal tiles that are specific colors that are used to either standardize or verify calibration for color measuring equipment. The tiles are held upright and separate (scratching them would put an end to their functionality). ANyway, we threw out an instrument, and I claimed the standards box. After pulling the hinges off and throwing out the lid, and then removing the guides on the inside (which took longer than I had hoped it would, stupid particle board) I find that my CD jewel boxes fit in it on their end, so I can read the spine label.

Now I have a portable carry case for CDs that doesn't put them into sleeves that can scratch the discs up. Yay!

/me laughs

Nope. It was a family pic with you, the beautiful wife and the ultra-cute girls.

I just watched a video last night of my brother-in-law sending my now one-year-old nephew into laughing fits because he was breaking grapes into smaller pieces and then spitting them onto his tray. Kids are so cute :D

Huh.  Really?  My parents made it seem like kids teach you how to kill and torture.  Kinda opposites...

actually, no, it's not remotely similar in any way to what I said.

Nor do I find it amusing. But maybe that's just me.

Actually I think one is needed.

SE, you should know that it's not just you. When has it ever been a good idea to believe the standards of "good taste" set by 15 year old boys?

I wouldn't go any further down this road.  You have no idea what you are dealing with, who I am, What i've been through...
just don't take it any further, k?

wt.... I'm... GEEZ can everyone just STOP FIGHTING!?

EUOL, consider this an official request. The next time someone brings up one platform being superior to another, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE SHUT DOWN THE THREAD. The next time someone starts getting huffy over being told that his line was offensive  PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE SHUT DOWN THE THREAD. The next time someone expands ungracefully upon a diplomatic attempt to point out that something is offensive, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE SHUT DOWN THE THREAD. The next time someone slams soemone else because they haven't been here for more than a couple days, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE SHUT DOWN THE THREAD. In fact, the next time anyone disagrees in a way anything other than peaceful, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE SHUT DOWN THE THREAD.

I'm kinda tired of it. Maybe I'm just in a bad mood today, but it's not just newbies. The regulars are getting on my nerves. Doing things that they know better than. We've been claiming that we feel ourselves an elite forum, with a higher breed of comments than other locations, so let's get our act together and show it and stop acting so frickin' petty. You don't have to prove someone's done something bad beyond a doubt. If you feel a comment is a little out of line, point it out once. If they continue, try ignoring it instead of forcing the other person to grovel. Maybe we can get this forum feeling fun again.

Ya you say now, but as soon as we start locking threads you'll all start getting mad that we are.  No offence SE but I have killed such threads in the VG forum and all people did was yell at me for doing such.

no, it's the only solution I can think of. Maybe if threads start getting locked left and right poeple will start to realize their behavior has to change.

actually, you know what would work? The ignore user mod. Then people can ignore posters. And if they don't use it, and someone they dislike still angers them, they have only themselves to blame.

Unfortunately, as of right now, I would have nearly have the forum on ignore.

ok, back to the topic at hand (wasting time at work). THey just cleaned my windows so I had to remove my figures off the sill. So now I get to set them back up.

Any suggestions? Here are the figures I have, all on the 8" scale (bigger than the old Star Wars and GI Joe, smaller than a standard Barbie).

Gumby
Aragorn (RotK)
Eowyn (RotK)
Venom
Carnage (has a string I can hang him from)
Spider-Man (movie version, with a streetlamp to hang on)
X-Men (movie versions: Rogue, Cyclops, Jean Gray, Storm [with a goofy looking stand], Prof. X [clear plastic wheel chair], Mystique, Sabertooth, Wolverine)
Impulse (cheesy display)

I also have a few on the wall (Scarlet Spider, Mary Jane, SPider-Man, Dare Devil, Punisher, and Gambit, all with their own displays) but I probably won't move them.

So, ideas?

Hmm. I think Aragorn should give Eowyn a piggyback ride. ;)
